As an 18 year old who is a proud owner of an ls430, and love wrenching on my own cars, this video is extremely helpful. I live in an apartment complex, no garage space and very minimal tools to work with, ive been putting off replacing my timing belt as i know it can be very tedious work, but i also know its going to be catastrophic if i keep neglecting it. A few months ago i did research on swapping the belt, and it just scared me away from doing it even more. After stumbling upon your video, im slightly more confident i can complete it myself. Ordering the tbelt and pump now, hopefully bust into it next week if i can get a day without heavy rain. Only worry now is the lack of impact, only have hand tools, but i believe i can make it work; always have. Anyway, got carried away, just wanted to say youve gained 1 new subscriber, youre extremely helpful, straight to the point, yet still throw in some laughs and funny bits. Keep doing you man, your videos and knowledge are incredible
Thanks man. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. You can definitely do this job! But don’t waste your time without the 1/2 impact gun. Even if you get the crank pulley off; you’ll have a heck of a time tightening it back down (cause the engine will be turning at the the same time). You can get a small air compressor and that mini 1/2 gun at harbor freight. You only need enough air to bust it loose and to tighten it back down. So you don’t need a large compressor. @griffzillagarage already sent the video to my gs430 buddy:) money's tight, but I guess I can use this as my excuse to finally invest in an impact. the amount of time I could've saved in past projects having air tools is immeasurable haha. I appreciate your help, ive had many questions working on this car google just can't answer. It's been alot more complex of a journey then single cam Hondas and carbureted engines I'm used too, but always worth it in the end.

@@griffzillagarage hey man! If I’m being honest with you, I haven’t. But the car also hasn’t been driving, so that’s my excuse for now 😅 will definitely go in when the cars up and going again. It’s been an on going, and expensive project. I’ve pretty much rebuilt the entire front end, steering, suspension, etc. new plugs, wires, fluids, brakes, everything. Finally had the car running and most importantly driving after 10 months of work. Long story short, typical 18 year old; I celebrated too hard. It’s short glory only lasted a few days before I attempted to show off to some buddies, and am now in the search for a rear end/ differential to swap in😅 all in good fun, though, and learning a lot through out. will be getting a new differential in hopefully asap, and timing belt will come once the cars roadworthy again!
The video is super amazing. I am too old to do the job myself. But knowing what it takes to do a good job is very helpful, so when I talk to the mechanic, I won't be starting from zero. I'm going to insist on the mechanic to use OEM even though I have to pay a little more.. I wish you have a shop that I can bring my car to. Thanks for posting your video.

Being an '06 LS430 owner, I really appreciate this helpful video and your positivity in particular. I would just suggest one final precautionary step: once the belt is in place per all timing marks as you show so clearly in your video, it would be wise to manually rotate the crank twice (i.e. 720*) to confirm the engine being in-time and that the belt hasn't inadvertently slipped and jumped a tooth. Once that rotation's done, the marks on the belt itself will no longer line up, but all timing marks on the cams and crank should (as shown in your video's close-up shots), thus confirming proper timing and avoiding potential disaster for this 3UZ-FE interference engine. Thanks for the great tips, especially about that alternator bolt. Saved this video for when I need to do this on my 05 LS430, still got about 50k before I’ll need to do it. Hopefully the last service used the good kit !
Keep in mind that rubber has a shelf life. Rule of thumb for Hondas is 7 years. Yeah, I know this isn’t a Honda.

just FYI. before you pull the belt, you are supposed to advance the crank 50 degrees so that the cams line up with the 2nd "T" mark before you put the new belt on per Toyota factory instructions (I just did this job this weekend and have the factory manual). Also, don't crank it backwards, go forwards 2 turns - you have to do that anyway to ensure you got it right.
@@spinnetti yeah that’s what the FSM says. It’s funny because every time someone mentions those tease to me in this video. I had no idea what they were talking about until I was recently checking the timing on a Lexus and happened to notice them. I use to work at Toyota and I standby the way I did it. When your good, your good, and when your damn good, you don’t need to crank it over two times. I treat timing chains like the one I just did on a Ford 3.5 EcoBoost and Jeep 3.6 the same way (and I’m Ford certified and Level lll Mopar certified! I used to do short blocks on Honda Civics and the only test drive I gave them was out to the parking lot; I wake up and piss excellence 😂 thanks for commenting. I hope you learned something.

Outstanding video that was right to the point and very detailed. It is a big help for DIYers. If you ever do cam seals on a 3UZ engine, please make a video. I would like to do the cam seals in mine but removing the cams from the heads to do the seals is a bit scary. Toyota should have designed it like other engines where you hood the cam with a wrench, unbolt the cam gears, and change the seals without removing the cams.

thx, it all was helpful. But what is the best way to re tighten the crank bolt (22mm socket) without using air tools?? Bcuz, i dont hv air tools. I'm just a guy in my driveway. There is no way to hold or freeze the engine into a static position. I think its a lot, like 200 foot pounds.
That’s a great question! Thanks for giving me the opportunity to answer it. This is a lil unorthodox, but if I had to, I’d recommend following ALL of these simple steps, especially SKIPPING TO STEP 6 for the easy answer!
1. Spray some lube on the crank shaft and pulley.
2.Line up the key way and hammer on as far as possible.
3. Wrap a rag around the crank pulley
4. Once the pulley is adequately protected, place a chain wrench around it to hold it in place.
5. Tighten down the crank shaft bolt while holding the crank pulley in place.
6. At this point you may find it more realistic to just buy a small air compressor and 1/2 impact with a shallow 22mm socket. I sure hope you skipped along to step 6 and missed all the headaches. If not, I guess you gotta tell your buddies how you failed an open book test.

@@griffzillagarage😂 Ditto! What's your thoughts Griff about adding a light coat of blue or orange Loctite to the threads of the tensioner pulley bolt during reinstall, cheap insurance or overkill? I only ask because having that bolt back out is nearly as scary as having the belt break, and I don't think the blue version would have any negative service impact on the aluminum block. I've heard that the orange version is supposed to have the holding ability of the red stuff yet with the breakaway force of the blue stuff, which sounds like the best of both worlds if true.

You strongly recommend the AISIN kit. My local auto parts sells an Import Direct OE Replacement Parts kit with a lifetime warranty (there premium kit) and can special order the AISIN kit TKT021, but does not come with any warranty. Do you have any experience or knowledge regarding my auto store's recommendation?
You can collect on the lifetime warranty if the alt. part breaks prematurely and wrecks your motor but that won't help your motor. This guy is one of many recommending AISIN - who is universally known to be a reliable OEM timing belt and accessory supplier for multiple brand Japanese vehicles . I typically will only buy dealer part or AISIN any more. Ask me how I know about the lifetime warranty part breaking prematurely at only 43K miles and crashing valves on my Subaru 2.5...

Regarding removal of the play after installing the timing belt and prior to installing the tensioner - Any more guidance on how tight to get the belt before installing the tensioner?
All of the slack should be taken out of the belt and all on the side where the tensioner assembly goes. I would then install the tensioner roller assembly. I’m going to be starting a membership where I will be doing a live chat as well as priority response to comments.
I have recently completed this job. It's safer to clock the cams to the large T on both sides to avoid the crank movement. No?
I don’t remember seeing a large T. I think I demonstrated that you have a fair amount of wiggle room when the belt is removed after the marks are lined up. I recommend doing whatever you’re most comfortable with.
@@griffzillagarage I watched the Car Care Nut's video (which isn't as detailed as yours BTW) and he used that method - apparently there are "T" marks on the two cams and something at the crank so you can get all of the assemblies away from the "spring" action of the cams wanting to move. Obviously, you always go back to the actual timing marks for verification.

Awesome video! I just got a 2004 and belt was shredded on it because previous owner only replaced the belt @90k. I followed your disassemble instructions and they worked perfectly. Removed frayed belt and tried to turn camshafts over before installing the belt, but they only turn halfway in either direction with crank at TDC. Since you are the expert I just wanted to ask if you think it has bent valves.

@@griffzillagarage Quite alright my friend! Oh, it was broken! Idler pulley and water pump seized. Didn't know if engine was toast. Put crank pulley at TDC, and can only get 1/2 turn rotation each way at cams. Didn't know if that meant valves were bent. Thanks for your reply!

Is there a "grenade pin" that needs to be removed from the Tensioner after installing? I heard it mentioned at the auto parts store.
Yes. Absolutely; I’m surprised I didn’t show that in the video. After installing the belt and everything release the pin from the tensioner. I hope the video helps you out and thank you for watching. most people isnt gonna think a quarter inch is too much off if you say its okay doesnt have to line up perfect it does have to be really close long as its within a millimeter it will be fine but not whole teeth no more than 8th in off
I’m very OCD and many people are scared they are going to mess up their engines if it’s not exact. That’s why Show there are some tolerance. As far as the wiggle room you described; it contradicts itself. 1/8 of an inch is equal to about 3mm. Thanks for watching and I hope it helped you out.

Thank you so much for this video. Question for you. I bought a 3uzge swapped is300 and it’s throwing a vvti solenoid (oil control valve) code someone did timing and is one tooth off. On my gs300 with 2jz I had same issue and a truck I did was I pulled the cam gear/pulley off and actually managed to move it one tooth and with a pry bar was able to bolt it back together without redoing the whole timing job. Took about 20-30 minutes total from start to finish. Do you think that be possible with this engine? The cam gear is very similar I’m just wondering what your opinion would be. Or should I just pull tensioner reset timing and not be lazy/ work smarter not harder lol. Also how long of of job would you say this is? It seems like it could be done pretty fast. If I’m just needing to adjust the timing one tooth do I still need pull water pump?
I’m not really a car guy, I’m just proficient at working on them. So I don’t have any idea what that other engine you talked about is like to work on 😂. Just take the whole thing apart and do it. @@Bustedkuhnuckles I would make sure it’s lined up on the crank, and then adjust the cams as necessary. if you take a prybar, you can probably compress the tensioner enough to get some slack and then adjust them. do you know what you’re doing. Make it happen, brother.
I got my crank bolt out but how do you get the crank pulley off? You skipped that part. Please help 😢
You should be able to grab that thing and wiggle/pull it off. If that doesn’t work, get a three job puller and use that to pull it off. You can also use 2 pry bars; just be careful not to damage the timing cover.
Is this basically the same for a 2003 Lexus LS430?

How many miles/kilometers the lexus ls430 can go before the timing belt gets really bad and requires replacement.
As eveey time I change it at 150000 kms it still looks in good condition as if it can still go up to another 80000 kms more or less ?

The correct way is to set them to the T, that's why it's there. When you line them up on the other mark, that cam is under spring load and could move... like it did in this video. Either way works, but the T is there for Timing service.
So for sure theres no need for a pulkey puller if i use an impact right?
The only reasonable way you’re going to get that bolt off is with an impact gun. Some Toyota’s may require a pulley puller after you have the bolt out. I don’t believe this one requires a pulley puller.
I can’t tell you 100%. Maybe you got a mechanically inclined ex that got in there before you and welded it all together.

Try taking the tensioner off, then hold the belt where it is supposed to be and slide the tensioner in; get the bolt started. Make sure you don’t cross thread the bolt. You could also try turning the cams and crank just a tiny bit to make sure you have all the slack out of them.

Timing belts typically don’t squeak. They will whine if they’re too tight. I recommend you take the serpentine belt off and see if the noise goes away. If it does, then the noise is from something on the serpentine belt, belt tensioner, or one of the pulleys, and not the timing belt. Remember if that timing belt goes it’s all over. What’s a typical independent garage price for: timing belt + water pump + tensioner? Quoted price I received was $2,000. Seems high?
Great question. Yeah that’s WAY to high! For this car I charged $1200. It also depends on the shops parts mark up and what brand parts. I highly recommend the Aisin kit. It comes with a Mitsuboshi (NOT Mitsubishi) belt, Koyo bearings, NTN tensioner, and Aisin water pump. It’s exactly what the dealer/OEM uses. Alot of shops will use a Gates or Continental kit. I would strongly advise against those. Those kits use GMB water pumps and bearings. And that stuff is crap. Unfortunately, most shops, don’t care about the quality of parts. The only thing they care about is the parts mark up, and how much they can screw you over and get away with it. I bet if you go to that shop you and your wallet are gonna leave looking and feeling like you were “ridden hard and put away wet”. Please let me know if you have any questions. is this the same spec for a 2001? I'm struggling to workout where the timing belt lines up on the cams
The lines on the belt are just guides. You don’t actually need to use them. What exactly are you struggling with? It is the same for your 2001.
@@griffzillagarage I can’t get the crank lined up. It’s always a tooth out on the right side of the engine (left side if you’re facing the engine head on ). If I turn the crank anti clockwise to get rid of the tension from the idler, then it’s two teeth off. I started watching the tutorial from the car care nut channel because he has the same model and year as me, but his tutorial doesn’t work for me hence how I found yours. I’m using the gates timing belt kit and it doesn’t have the arrows on the belt either it’s just a solid white line.

What are those red caps you have on the hose inlets?
Those caps come with various new parts. I’ve just saved them over the past 20 years do use in situations like this.
All those parts and bolts need to come off just to change the timing belt? and you need to make sure timing marks are lined up?.......never mind! i think i will just pay toyota to do it for me and pay what ever they ask. ........or not buy this car at all. My dream is over. :(
