The largest charitable ambulance body in Britain is the St John's Ambulance Brigade. This was formed in 1877, by the successors of the Order of St John. To this day, all their ambulances are marked with a Hospitaller cross.
Religious Military Orders were quintessencial to the formation of my country, Portugal, during the XII and XII centuries. Crusaders on route to the Holly Land assisted our first king, D. Afonso Henriques, on the successful siege of Lisbon against the Muslims, and even his father, Count D. Henrique of Burgundy, came to the Peninsula as a knight on Crusade. Various donations were given to orders such as the Templars and Hospitallers throughout Portugal, but also to other minor orders, such as the Avis, that would eventually give name to the second dinasty of Portuguese kings, when one of its grand masters became the king D. João I. Curious fact - which I hope K&G will bring up in the Templars episode - after the fatal order to exterminate the Knights Templar was given, and this order was virtually extinguished, king D. Dinis managed to "save" them and preserve it in the form of the newly established _Ordem_ _de_ _Cristo_ - or Order of Christ. Their symbol is well present in Portugal's golden age, in the sails of the ships that crossed the unknown oceans. It still exists in Portugal, and its Grand Master is the acting President of the Republic. Edit: Spain also has incredibly important orders of this sort to their own History, such as Santiago Order and Calatrava Order.
I'm not denying the work these men did in the middle ages and I'm sure many low ranking knights were well meaning, but be warry of the people in power for often times it is the enemy who put them in place, desguised as ministers of Light.
the holocaust of the muslims of spain is nothing to be proud of, as a somali im proud we defeated the portoguesse crusaders in many battles and even killed cristavo da gama, the son of vasco da gama if am not wrong. the portoguesse managed to capture some arab cities in the arabian peninsula and the swahili coast but they never managed to capture a single city from the somalis.
Was this the same Joao who defeated the Spanish King Juan at Aljubarrota? They're both named John, gotta use those dialectics to distinguish between them.
this is so interesting, my country's flag actually has the St'John cross on it, and they also protected our country from the turks in their invasion. Also during their time in Malta they have built our capital city taking the name of "Valletta" named after the Knight Hospitaller "Jean Parisot de Valette"
Andrea Cassar If you are talking about the National flag of Malta it’s the george cross which was rewarded to the citizens of Malta during world war 2 as nazi and Italian bombers attacked malta for a period of 2 years. One of my personal dreams in life is to visit Malta. It has such a unique and rich history and is filled with natural beauty. All of western civilization is indebted to the Maltese people. Although largely unknown in the United States, the Order is still offering a network of medical services in some parts of the world, mostly in Europe ("St. John's Ambulance Services "). The longest war, I think you meant the longest occupation. War was over years ago. Afganistan was occupied by american forces because just as trump said, the reason why the army is there is to prevent terrorist cells from forming because its better to kill them there than to have civilian americans be harmed back home. There was no peace to be made, just a return of american forces. Similarly to how the americans occupied the japanese and left them after some years except with the japanese, they were able to work with the americans and build a better country while the afganistanis wasted the chance.

I live in Poznan, Poland. In my city the Hospitalliers recived land and small church from the local duke in year 1187 AD. They also build there a hospital which still exists and is run by them till today. First both the church and hospital were outside city walls so the church was named: "The Church of Saint John of Jerusalem outside the walls". Later when city grew that dictrict of the city was named "Komandoria" (means Commandery of the Order) and the lake next it was named "Malta lake" because later the seat of the order was moved to Malta. The first Polish member of the Knights Hospitaler Order was probably (its not 100% confirmed) duke Henry I of Sandomierz ( who lived in years 1131 - 1166). He was the first Polish feudal lord who led Polish knights for crusade in Holy Land, never married and had no children. He also established of a commandery of the Hospitallers which was probably the oldest in Poland. He died on his own organised crusade against the pagan Prussians.

Wrong. Popular opinion, because they're mine as well. I am in healthcare and my hobbies are BJJ, heavy lifting, shooting stuff and bankrupting my kingdom by building hospitals everywhere after a crusade in CK2. Hospitallers speak to my heart.
Wonderful video! But there is so much more to talk about! Like how after the Christians were expelled from the Levant the Hospitallers transformed themselves into the best pirates in the Med and were at the forefront of fortification science. While the Templar’s found themselves victims of French treachery and were destroyed, the Hospitallers turned Rhodes into a many-hundred year thorn thrust right into the heart of Islam. The 2 sieges of Rhodes are among the most dramatic in history, eclipsed nonetheless by the Great Siege of Malta in 1565 which catapulted an entirely anachronistic (at that point) Crusading Order into one of the most celebrated groups in history and the only Crusading era Order to survive and be relevant until the Napoleonic era. So much to include! Anyway, thanks for this video and look forward to the others.
A little mistake in the video: for the 'hospital symbol' you used the caduceus (the staff with the 2 snakes) which is the staff of Hermes, the greek messenger of the gods. Instead you should've used the Rod of Asclepius, as Asclepius is associated with healing and medicine and the rod is the correct symbol of medicine but often confused with the staff of Hermes.

I always thought the Hospitaller’s were way cooler than the Templars. The fact that they held on as an organization for so long is so crazy.
The Templars were done in by a greedy, murderous, evil King. They were hunted down, imprisoned. tortured and killed. The King became the beneficiary of all they Templars owned. The Templars had the mission of patrolling the route to Jerusalem and protecting the pilgrims.
Although largely unknown in the United States, the Order is still offering a network of medical services in some parts of the world, mostly in Europe ("St. John's Ambulance Services ").

Our order was expelled from Malta by Napoleon, but we are still very much around today.
Knights Hospitallers: Overall Good Guys
A little mistake in the video: for the 'hospital symbol' you used the caduceus (the staff with the 2 snakes) which is the staff of Hermes, the greek messenger of the gods. Instead you should've used the Rod of Asclepius, as Asclepius is associated with healing and medicine and the rod is the correct symbol of medicine but often confused with the staff of Hermes.
I thought that the Rod of Aesclepius was derived from Hermes Cadeuceus. ?
The Knights Hospitaller were way better than the Knights Templar, just saying 🤷♂️
