Watching this video made me realize that the "second screen" phenomenon is undeniably present in cinemas, particularly among younger audiences. It feels like two cultures are colliding: the older generation, who value the experience of sitting in the dark and fully immersing themselves in the film, and the youth, who, having grown up with Netflix during COVID-19, often check their phones in the theater-unintentionally disrupting the atmosphere.
I sit in an odd place with this phenomenon because one of the things that really helps me focus on work (costume/props design and making) is having stuff like tv shows or TH-cam videos on in the background. But it’ll hardly ever be a tv show I’ve never seen and/or a serious drama. I reserve my “background shows” for things like sitcoms I’ve already seen or trashy reality tv. But I also can’t stand shows that feel like they were just made to have on in the background and have nothing to say for themselves. The reason I can stick DS9 or Parks & Rec on and half pay attention is I’ve already seen them before. Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of audio books as well as they fill the same space without distracting visuals (also means I keep up on my reading). Often people ask why, since I work in film, I don’t use that time to watch more films and the answer is that I actually want to focus on films properly 😂
Hey!! I run the next show after the cliffhanger reveal and pause it too!! Series format-wise, I do like the “limited series “ model like “Queen’s Gambit “. It’s kind of like a really long movie in 43 min segments
