    Are you a joiner or builder by trade Brian? You are absolutely amazing at renovating your new home. Sorry to hear Diane is not feeling good, I look forward to seeing you both every Saturday here in Ireland 🇮🇪 ❤ Love your videos. ❤

      Thank you so much. Diane is feeling much better today. I have been many things in the past and have picked up bits and pieces of knowledge and skills over the years but I have never actually worked as a joiner or builder. Anyone can do what we are doing, you just need some confidence in yourself and access to TH-cam 😁

We’re visiting Portugal at the moment and have been driving all over since Sunday, looking for our ideal area to move to, clocked up 2000km so far. Hope Diane is feeling better soon. We really struggled to use the metal framing, especially making the cuts, I see your cutters have blue handles, ours were yellow, maybe that's the reason 🤣also wish we had invested in the crimper instead of using the screws.

    • @Portugalonashoestring
      @Portugalonashoestring  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you so much. Diane is completely over it now (I think she just didn't want to do any work 😉) Definitely never use yellow handled tin snips!! Red or blue will always cut true! 🤣. The crimpers are a godsend, we also use the screws when necessary but the crimper is so much faster. I think they were only about €10 on Amazon. Hope you and doggies are all well 😊

    Hope Diane is feeling well now and hopefully getting a little well earned rest. Enjoying your bathroom remodel. On the ceiling, is that mold? We had a leak in our kitchen that created mold and we had to replace all the dry wall, so curious about those dark spots. Thank you for showing the details in what you do. 😊🌸🌺

    • @Portugalonashoestring
      @Portugalonashoestring  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you. Diane is better now 🙂. There is no mould on the ceiling but there is areas of flaking paint and there is one hairline crack which gets damp when it rains, which has stained the ceiling above the door. We are awaiting repair work to the flat roof above before we actually fit plasterboard over that section of ceiling to make sure any seepage has stopped before we close it up 😊

    Nice job Brian, couple of questions, where are you getting your steel chanel from? Whats the riveter machine make and did you get it from the same place? I used wood before as you know but having watched you put that chanel up I am encouraged to give it a go. Weather's turned a bit damp and we have been outside working, so like you we will have to turn our minds to interior jobs. Ps. Good to see another "sturdy chap" up a ladder. 😂 Best Dave and Jeni

    • @Portugalonashoestring
      @Portugalonashoestring  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you David, the steel profile is available in most builder's merchants but I get mine from Bricomarche in Pombal. The two main parts are a perimeter track which is a plain U shape, and the cross beams which have a lip on the edges and holes punched in the length for plumbing and electrics. (These are mainly for vertical walls but work great for ceilings too) They are usually around €2.99 per 3 metre length. The riveter is a no-name brand from Amazon (about €10-12) but again, pretty much all DIY/hardware store will have them. They are more of a crimper than a riveter really, they punch two little tabs through the profile and "staple" the frame together. Get some self drilling screws too for odd areas where you may not be able to fit the tool. Standard plasterboard screws are fine for fixing the plasterboard to the frame. Hope you are not getting too wet and if there's anything else, just ask....us sturdy guys need to stick together 💪😉🤣

    Why not change the direction that the door opens? If you do that, you can have the vanity unit against the wall which the door currently opens against. It would also allow you to have a larger shower - take it from me, an 80cm wide shower is not big enough.

    • @Portugalonashoestring
      @Portugalonashoestring  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you. If we change the direction of the door then it would be opening into the room and take up more space and we would have to walk around it to get into the bathroom. European showers are rarely more than 70cm wide as standard. We went for 80cm for a little more space but anything wider(nothing available here larger than 90cm) starts to become prohibitively expensive. As an example a 70 X 100 is €110, 80 X 100 €139 and 90 x 100 €395. 😁

    • @ruthjarvis1933
      @ruthjarvis1933 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Portugalonashoestring I meant, instead of the door opening right into the bathroom, have it opening to the left in the bathroom. I hadn't appreciated the price difference between an 80cm shower tray and say a 100cm one. Best of luck with it all.

    • @Portugalonashoestring
      @Portugalonashoestring  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you. Yes that is what I assumed that you meant. The door would open into the bathroom, hinged on the left as you walk in. That would also mean that the vanity sink unit could only be about 60cm wide and stand right up against the edge of the bath. I know that traditionally bedroom and bathroom doors would always open into a room to delay sightlines as you enter, but I think it is generally a better use of space(especially in a small room) to have doors opening against a wall. I really appreciate your input and we are always looking for alternatives to how we have envisioned a project. Fresh ideas from fresh minds! 👍🙂

    Not using the green plaster board for water? There are 3 types. The normal, the green for water and then there is one for the fire.

    • @Portugalonashoestring
      @Portugalonashoestring  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Thank you. The only difference between normal and green plasterboard is that the paper surfaces are more resistant to damp(NOT waterproof) Green plasterboard is not necessary because the plasterboard will not be left exposed. It will all be covered by a skim coat of plaster which will give more protection than the green paper anyway. Plus a layer of adhesive and tiles. Tiling over standard plasterboard/skim coat, is a tried and tested system that I have used several times and have never had any issues with damp 👍😊

    • @Portugalonashoestring
      @Portugalonashoestring  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Jean, that is right, we have a small bathroom just by the kitchen which is functional but small (1.5mx1.5m) this is what we use at the moment but ultimately it will be getting stripped, extended and fully refurbished. But that's a job for a year or two down the line 😁

  • @greencheek4561
    @greencheek4561 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Hi Brian and Diane
    I hope Diane is is feeling better And yourself.i like the kitchen you done a nice job. I've no doubt the bathroom will as well.. Just out of curiosity why are you lowering the ceiling. The existing one doesn't look to bad. And why not fit tighter to the ceiling.. Any reason for 400 centres not 600.. And I wouldn't put a bath in its OK for you youngsters but as you get older like me it's harder to get in and out of lol so just a shower for me take care the two of you,,

    • @Portugalonashoestring
      @Portugalonashoestring  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you. Diane is feeling much better today. The ceiling is solid poured concrete and to channel out for lighting cables etc would mean a lot of work. In addition, it provides a space to fit insulation as there is none at all at the moment. Lowering the ceiling provides 150mm space into which we are fitting 100mm of fibreglass insulation. With regards to the spacing of the supporting structure, 600mm centres potentially would allow the plasterboard to sag slightly. Probably not a big issue but it only means putting two extra beams in at a cost of €6.
      And finally, I would have happily done without a bath but Diane likes to have a soak and I am firmly of the opinion that the best way to deal with a stressed woman is to keep her submerged in warm water and feed her chocolate 😉🤣🤣( in reality it really helps with her arthritis aches and pains)

    • @greencheek4561
      @greencheek4561 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Brian and Diane. I New they would be a reason for the work. I didn't realise it was concrete ceiling. You could still leave the bath out just tell diane to jump in the river at the bottom of the garden 😅I'm only joking Diane. I hope you're feeling well today,,
