Despite the frustrating bureaucracy, which seems more complicated now than when I arrived in 1989, life in Portugal has a quirky, lovable rhythm that really draws you in. I love the fact that little by little you have found activities that bring you joy and enrich the new life you’re creating in your little piece of Portugal. You are such a fun couple❤.
Our first winter here was we didn't really feel how cold it got until the late February when the temperature really dropped, made the mistake of using a portable butane fire which in turn made the place really damp. Log burners all the way, they both heat the air and the walls/floors. Not wanting to teach, we find starting them before you actually need to is better than waiting as it starts to warm the building up ( thermal mass) Dogs say Hi 🐾🐾🐾
Thank you for that. Humidity is a major problem in Portugal anyway so adding more moisture to the air is definitely something we wanted to avoid. We used to use a log burner when we lived on a narrow boat and I know what you mean about lighting it before you need it. They give a long low heat but are difficult to turn up or down quickly 😁 hope you both are well and the doggies are being mischievous 😉🙂
Tip for garden use compost bags in pots for potatoes easy to harvest no no digging old compost into the garden end of season breaks garden soil up makes it easy to work with when weeds grow in loose soil easy to just pull out. Just means every year your garden gets easier 3 or 4 bags of compost getting added to the garden.
Well, that was fun! For anyone wanting to meet these two, they really are what you see here only much better in person. Both have big, kind hearts. I can't wait to get to see them again, if they'll see us LOL. Brian, I learned to do most of the things, just like you. I never had the money to pay someone to do things for me so I learned, through trial and error, to do it myself. Mom used to say "If someone else can do it, so can I." That's how it is, just do it...if it doesn't turn out, you tried and you learned along the way. The very best to you both! Randy
Hi Bri and Di, I love TH-cam, I swapped out the hard drive for a SSD in my old iMac by watching TH-cam videos then did the same on my laptop. I’m a 60+ hairdresser so no prior computer experience. I’m with you, give it a go!
hi to both of you...nice to hear your chat today. Love the idea of that snug in the winter...sounds like a plan! And Brian...no need for the snigger when you're talking of us all freezing here at home...hahahaha! I understand your feelings Diane about living in a building site...its not nice...but glad you've at least got the kitchen to sit in now and soon you'll have a new bathroom..yay! Oh and Brian...i think you're amazing too..haha! And you Diane for putting up with him :) xx
Thanks Carol, we have actually had a few days of rain this week. And when I say rain I mean torrential downpours with thunder and lightning! ⚡ But we are due seven or eight days of dry warm weather next week so we can't complain 😁
Hi Brian and Diane, i wondered if you were planning to give yourselves privacy by high fencing and planting a hedge in front? Or Greening the area, eg, an ivy which as you know grows well and must be controlled on a fence. Also a carport for your van? Its perfect having the contact with the animal shelter and that satifies your love for them. Being close to the road one would worry that a pet would want to investigate the barking dogs further up. Also if you need to go back to U k the worry of asking folks to care for your pet. Your weather is like ours in Cape Town...cool am/ late afternoon, but lovely during the day. Also your soil, rich, like mine here, anything grows, unless snails like it as well! So enjoying your journey...thankyou.💐🐕
Thank you. We don't have any plans for privacy fencing at the front. We like the open view and feel. We think it would feel closed in if we put anything in the way. 😊
Thank you. We did a tour of the property in a couple of the earliest videos, you will find them on our channel page/playlist. But we were thinking of doing an updated tour around the property to show the changes that have happened and what our revised plans are now. We park the vehicles at the side of the property, just off the road but parallel to it. We will include it in the walk around when we do it. Watch this space 😊
We are just starting to put a small fan heater on in the morning for an hour, the rest of the day is still comfortable at the moment but colder weather is definitely on the way 🥶😊
Hi Brian and Diane I enjoyed the Q N A. Nice to see straight honest answers.. 1 more at the Manchester visa office did you have to have the acro or DBS aposled or notarised..
Thank you very much. When we had our interview at Manchester (Dec 2023) there was no need to have anything at all apostilled but I have heard that it is sometimes needed now so best to check elsewhere. There are a few Portugal immigration pages on Facebook that are very helpful 🙂
Another fab video ! You guys are the best for sharing, thank you. Did you get the new truck also from market place ? We are coming to PT in November to sign the deed for our new house, maybe if we have time we could meet up with you ? 😊😊
Thank you so much. Yes we found the truck on market place. We find it best for a lot of stuff here. We would love to meet up if you are over here. Our email address is in the description if you want to message us directly 😊
Hi both great video u both make Me me laugh next time u bring doggies home bring a small one and a big one home u both be happy lol I miss my two I lost them about two years ago I both take care u both are doing a great job x🇬🇧❤🐕
Thank you so much. Please don't be giving her ideas!! 😉 Sorry to hear about your dogs, we lost both of our labradors a few years ago within a few weeks of each other, it was devastating and we still have a cry now and then when we think of them.......like right now! 😭❤️
Well I never. Your appointments for Stage 2 were exactly the same as ours in early March. Uber for the Espinho app and I stayed in Coimbra, only to be told it was cancelled until May 😂. When did Diane receive her card in the end ?
Thank you. Diane still hasn't received her card yet, along with hundreds of people who have been waiting 6,9,12 months in some cases. We now have a Portuguese representative who helps people deal with Portuguese bureaucracy. She has already helped some friends of ours get their cards sorted and is contacting AIMA on our behalf. Normally we wouldn't like to pay for someone to do something we should be able to do ourselves but she has been recommended and her rates are so low that it is silly not to utilise her. ( Initial consultation and letters sent on our behalf plus subsequent actions after AIMA responds, total of €60 each) Good luck with your applications 👍
@@Portugalonashoestring our cards all received. However, Lorraine got recalled to Espinho after 4 months as they messed up the passport scan 🙄. But we've got the cards now !
Portugal will tax any income worldwide where the tax already paid is less than the tax in Portugal. eg. You pay €100 in tax to the UK but Portugal tax on the same income would be €120 so they charge you €20. That is how I understand it 🙂
Bom dia ☀️ Como estão Brian e Diane? I forgot to ask you a question last week? You’re smart for having those rental properties in England. I do have a question. 😊 Is it still affordable to buy property in England? It’s wonderful seeing you guys enjoying yourselves (working hard 😓)😅) and setting off on this Portugal adventure. 😊 ☀️ Having lived in Portugal for several years, I understand your “complaints” about the weather. 😝 In Central Portugal, it is said, to have two harvest seasons, due to the hot climate, compared to Northern Portugal. 🌱 🍅 🥔 🥕 🌽 Boa semana para vós. 😊 You guys are so funny and seem to have loads of fun together. Love Diane’s laugh. 😆 Sam 🌷
Thank you so much. Property prices in the UK have risen dramatically over the last five years or so and if we were to start again I don't think we could afford to buy properties to rent any more. We were lucky to have cash available just at the time property was still affordable.🙂
Oh, it’s great you’ve joined the knitting and crocheting group. You’ll quickly pick up on the Portuguese language with them. Just make sure they don’t teach you the “nasty” words. 😂

winter in portugal? put a sweater on and wait for spring! it doesn't compare to england weather... this is almost africa! well... i mean, africa starts here. so does the rest of the world, for that matter... 😜🤠😎
Thank you for sharing your experience in settling in. So refreshing to have a candid discussion. You are very brave. Wishing you success
Thank you very much. We are glad that you enjoyed it ☺️

Thank you very much 😊
You two are a lovely couple. Best wishes. ❤️
Thank you so much 😊
Put wetted cardboard under the weed barrier. It will help smother the weeds.
Thank you. The weed fabric has actually done a great job on its own but it's a handy tip to know for the future 🙂

Very informative. I am not sure if I missed the beginning but I am curious about the whole layout of your building and where do park your vehicle.
