    I'm 72 and started taking swing lessons from Erin Stevens over here in Pasadena CA when I retired at 65...and I got hooked immediately taking east coast, west coast, and of course lindy..the thing I enjoy so much is learning different styles from other teachers and just the joy of dancing and the new circle of friends of all ages...you really should have more than 8.5K followers...continued success...

      I totally agree! Different styles, and circles of friends of all ages. Beautiful. How exciting you learned from Erin Stevens!! I've never met her, but I'm sure she has some amazing stories.

      I remember when I finally got it to dance with Erin and her sister. So special experiencing a bit of their passion for the Lindy Hop.

      We used to go to Pasadena Dance's Catalina Island Swing Camps for several years. Frankie Manning was still alive and was one of our instructors!! He moved like butter. We were lucky to be taught by the likes of Frankie and Erin Steven, amongst others. Lindy Hop is such a blast to learn. Thank you for this video! So much of our library is still on VHS and we need to get it converted!

    I really wish my beginner course teachers would have been this clear and sympathetic, it would have saved me a lot of frustration!

    I’ve always loved the music and look of swing and lindy hop and now I’m on a youtube spree in anticipation of me and my girlfriend taking a beginners course in a couple of weeks. As a queer person the roles coded as male and female have always deterred me from social dancing and it makes me very happy to hear people just say leader and follower. I can’t wait to get moving, thanks for some great videos!

    I really appreciate the emphasis on variation and "feeling it out." I have sat through a lot of long, pointless arguments about which exact count to release the lead arm on, or fiddly over-explanations of how exactly the follow is supposed to pivot. I think this takes the right approach to set people up to start working on swing-outs in a way that allows for experimentation and exploration, rather than a narrow fixation on doing them "right" or "clean."

    Never thought I'd get so excited about animated arrows overlaying a dance video! Nice visualization of the marvel and mechanics of a swing out!

    I love the history you guys throw in. It really adds so much, I mean, you realize it wasn’t something invented yesterday and uploaded to the internet to entertain you for a day or two.
    And you two sure look good, you know, hands flying out in all directions, waving, flaying, stabbing in the air, Brooks shaking you like a wet mop, ha ha ha, can’t wait to started!!

      I mean the description is so wonderful. You forget when these people existed. Waltz was scandalous not too long ago. I'm sure the fact that Lindy Hop was done by a Black population enhanced the "wildness" of it for the white onlookers.

    The swivels and the speed make it a little hard to figure out the counts. I think I’m too basic for this video. You two are really good though.

      This is good feedback. I'll see what I can do to make something more accessible.

      @Lillian Maybe it can help you if you change the speed of the video in the TH-cam player? You can see more things that way and decompose the steps at your pace.

    I find Brooks "lines" unusual, looks like he is not doing linear moves (like i learned every time) but somehow "circular", his rockstep (or backstep) on the 1 looks like he is doing it sideways, 45 degrees out of the line of their swingout and the other half also somehow "around". Only Laura is on the line. Been wondering about this in other videos. Wish i could see it from top or something. Never mind. Whatever works.

    Collegiate... Shag???

    • @LauraGlaess
      @LauraGlaess  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, it's a different kind of collegiate. In the foot notes of Frankie Manning's book, his Co-author Cynthia Millman said it resembled side by side Charleston.
