I remember watching on TH-cam the debate between Nixon and Kennedy. There was a question that was asked and Kennedy answered first, then when it was Nixon’s turn he responded something along the lines of “I do not disagree with Mr Kennedy on this point, I think that is the right way to go” or something to that effect… and that was it. That is a good example of a man putting his ego aside in order to prioritize the nation’s interests. He’s not there to show off and insult his opponent just for the sake of winning, he’s there to protect the nation’a interests. I am honestly incapable of even imagining such an answer coming from today’s politicians. Today’s American politics are nothing but a sad ego fest

dont even have to back that far, look at the mccain/obama debates and town halls from 2008. Both were super civil. McCain even got offended and stopped a woman from finishing her question because she tried to falsely claim Obama was a muslim and wasnt born in the USA. McCain literally told her "No. No...hes a decent man." and skipped her. None of this vitriol in politics was mainstream until 2016 when Donald Trump somehow resonated with a majority of red necks and they won the electoral college.

Carter couldn't get anything done legislatively because politicians in his own party didn't trust him. After leaving the WH he successfully crafted an image as a do gooder for humanity. This was largely smoke and mirrors, as he hurt humanity immensely with his disastrous administration. He also engaged in lots of terrible foreign policy meddling during his post WH years.

At least Nixon did not use the authority of the office or the color of law to do his misdeeds. He, (the plumbers), took the risk of breaking the law on their own and did not simply make up new laws to get away with their crimes. Nothing compared to now; IRS and Lois Lerner, J6, not prosecuting those threatening SCOTUS, not following the law at the border.

Generally a good comment, but the break-in of the DNC HQ was perpetrated by Gordon Liddy, Jim McCord and the other "plumbers" without Nixon's knowledge. Nixon's big mistake was worrying about the welfare of the Puerto Rican guys who had participated. If he had just washed his hands of them and replaced John Mitchell as AG to ensure that the plumbers were prosecuted for the break-in, he would have been fine.
