    When we renovated our kitchen in 2003, we were careful to choose a medium wood tone. Not dark enough to offend when light tones were in style. Not light enough to offend when dark tones were in style. Not “woody” enough to offend when painted cabinets were in style. So far, so good!

      That sounds like a perfect strategy! That’s what I want to do when we finally can afford to do our floors. I feel like something in a medium tone, without a dramatic grain, should be perfect for anyone’s style.

      1940s is the era I prefer after living in many homes and having many different decor styles (eg Mid century modern). Ideally I think people should research styles over the decades and see what resonates with them and go with their preference. I don't give a fig if people think my taste is dated. I like the 1940s and it gives me much pleasure! Enjoy your kitchen! (they are, without a doubt better quality then what is made now!)

    This is sooooo good! I think the hard part is realizing that your current interiors loves are trends. In the moment, these options look beautiful and are easily accessible. You may not even realize how your personal aesthetics are influenced by the world of design swirling around you. Thanks so much for exploring this topic!

    • @bluewrenbirdie
      @bluewrenbirdie ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Agreed, almost everything current ends up being just a trend. When I consider an item, I ask myself if it was something I would have liked 5, 10 or even 20 years ago and can see myself still liking 5/10/20 years from now. If not, I have to question whether I'm caught up in a trend without realising. I think everyone is going to look back at "timeless" white marble/quartz in 20 years and cringe, to give one example. It's beautiful, but it already dates your home as a recent renovation and is so overused now that it's definitely going to go out of style.

      @@bluewrenbirdie Yes marble on the countertop in the 2010's-2020''s scream renovation of that era, not like marble that has been placed before, which is timeless, plus marble everything is passe as it should be used sparingly for major impact and a classic look.

    • @be5952
      @be5952 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@vaderladyl _"Classic, timeless decor will never be past good and will always remain looking great."_
      Agreed. But (and I think it's a big 'but') what is "classic", and who defines that? For instance, think about 'traditional' decor---more elaborate decoration; the fancier shapes on furniture and accessories; certain colour palettes, etcetera. You'd think these would always be 'in'.
      But after the late 80s and early 90s big trend toward elaborate, rich colours and old fashioned type design, it went out of fashion. _"No problem",_ we think, because *traditional = classic,* so it'll be popular again in a short while.
      But when it came back in (barely---'modern' seems to have dominated for over 20 years) the style mavens had now changed many of the details, especially colour palettes, degree of ornamentation and other aspects that made the '80s traditional' now look as dated as 90s soft mauves, seafoam greens and pinks.
      So, I think *it's difficult, if not impossible, to get a truly 'classic' look* in one's home (if that means it'll never look outdated), because it always involves at least some interpretation of what 'classic' means for the moment the style is being implemented. And those seemingly insignificant modifications will also date quickly.
      What do you think? Am I missing something?

  • @vaderladyl
    @vaderladyl ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Some of this info is actually kind of dated as well. Many of these things are actually back on trend such as the wood color cabinets, and a lot of people don't like white kitchens anyway or white countertops, so just by changing some details in the kitchen and adding a complimentary color on the walls your wood cabinets can look amazing without having to be painted or your countertops changed.
    It is also a very sustainable, environmentally friendly choice.

    What is currently called Timeless will, in 15 years, be called Dated. I am now a senior and have lived through many Timeless (now Dated) eras. I currently live in a condo built in the mid 1990s but my decorating taste runs to the 1940s. So that is my decor and my furniture. I made sure that when I renovated, the things that are fixtures...the cupboards, the interior doors, the bathroom fixtures, are basic so the next person can decorate however they want. PS If you have any anxiety AVOID all white decor. It increases anxiety levels.

  • @hejiranyc
    @hejiranyc ปีที่แล้ว +59

    Recently I went shopping for a home and toured many, many dated/ugly places. In fact I bought one of these dated/ugly places and just completed a gut renovation. Based on that experience, I have learned a thing or two about what makes spaces dated/ugly. The number one thing to avoid if you want to remain timeless is avoid the color RED and variations thereof. I'm talking about red, crimson, maroon, coral, peach, orange, terra cotta, magenta... but also woods that have red undertones like cherry wood, mahogany, red oak, umber, etc. Use a neutral color palette that has cool/gray undertones such as white, cream, "greige," sage green, and woods that have blacker undertones like walnut. Also, don't do decorative borders/moldings of any kind and avoid any finish that has a weathered, washed out patina, e.g., lime wash, sponge paint, oil rubbed/antiqued metal. Also, bright, shiny surfaces do not age well either. A timeless home will generally have matte/satin finishes without lots of moldings and ornamentation. Things that are PROVEN to be timeless: marble, natural (matte, non-red) wood finishes, Scandinavian/mid century design, art deco and organic forms.

    • @MoondustManwise
      @MoondustManwise ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Alternatively, do the opposite. Make it dated as hell. Go crazy stupid. Have fun with it! (Your renovated place sounds like it looks really cool though, you should be proud)

    • @eizhowa

      Grey undertones look super dated where I live. They were everywhere between 2005-2020.

    • @vaderladyl
      @vaderladyl ปีที่แล้ว +15

      You are not right on most of your statements. Wood is not dated at all and all colors are classic plus real wood cannot compare to MDF.
      Check classic decor and all you will see are timeless woods in all shades of wood tones including cherry, oak and mahogany.
      Not all has to be modern decor and many like classic, traditional as well.
      They can look amazing with the proper complimentary paint on the walls and the accessories and appliances updated.
      I would never paint good wood or get rid of it. Why would I destroy real wood to put MDF, vinyl or fake stuff especially at an antique home.
      And don't get me started on the shiny stuff, like lacquer antique cabinets and such, and moldings and ornamentation.

    • @rebelliousraven
      @rebelliousraven ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I'm not into Greige gray undertones on anything. I think any wood tone is beautiful. Old shellac'd floors and trim are some of the most beautiful things to behold ....think 1920s Victorian staircases. I do prefer brushed metals though with the exception of vintage copper which is also gorgeous.

    We'll be moving into my mother's house in the next few years, and the kitchen is totally 90s: Honey oak cabs, formica countertops (which are still in excellent condition), linoleum floor, lacy valance, grapevines and Thomas Kinkade. There are also the pink and blue pastel wallpaper and borders throughout the house. All of that worked for her, and it's her house, so it absolutely should have been how she wanted it. But holy catfish, we've got some work to do when the time comes . . .

    • @be5952
      @be5952 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tamaramartin4015 I totally get your current dislike of the honey oak finish, whether that's because:
      a) you would have never liked it in the first place, or
      b) because you're tired of it---both equally legit reasons to want to change something.
      As someone who loved the honey oak finish back in the day, I _still_ agree with you (even though I kind of feel like a traitor to myself---lol). You'd think that something like real wood (should be timeless and classic) would _never_ look dated. But it shows how even something as 'minor' as stain colour is HUGE as to how something looks, and can definitely tie a look to a certain time period. (Causing that deflating _"....oh, yeah.....honey oak..."_ reaction every time you come into the room.)
      Depending on the cabinet door profiles (simple or 'cathedral' top arch or other) you might go one of two ways:
      1) Paint the doors and background wood white / current shade of beige / whatever other current colour(s) you like, or
      2) Go the 'radical' route. I'm not exactly sure what that might entail, but keep the cabinets and maybe go a crazy colour, or 'do' something creative to one or a few doors that's so deliberately off-the-wall that it makes a bold design statement (I wouldn't try this, but only because I don't think my imagination could pull off a sufficiently 'quality' radical idea).

    Good video! I want to add one major element that make a space look dated: fake or imitated materials. They don’t wear or get patina naturally like the real material and usually can’t stand the test of time. They are also often a reflection on what is trendy in that moment, being a cheaper version of that. Real materials may go out of style, but they often come back at some point. And if you don’t want to wait for it, it can be disassembled and reused instead.

      I dunno. Things will certainly change. But I don't think there is anything here that will ever cause cringe.

    Suggestions for how to make a carpet work when you're in a rental and unable to remove it? Trying to make the best of it, luckily it's beige but i wish it was a hard wood floor! 😭

      If you're able, you may want to invest in a flooring you like and replace the carpet when leaving.

      Put a rug on top or play with the colors in your color palette to incorporate some beige when decorating. It is a neutral color so it should be treated as like it is not there by concentrating on the rest of the decor.

    I'm loving your practical take on design aesthetics many of us are currently struggling with. I recently purchased a small open form condo with beautiful bones to include very high, sloping ceiling, and even a wood burning fireplace. To start I've gone with matte white walls, white oak floors, and Scandinavian design. I inherited a mirrored wall (circa 2000's?), and sliding patio doors with the dreaded vertical blinds. I dealt with the ceiling-to-floor mirrored wall by framing it with attractive molding, and it now makes the space appear larger, reflecting light in an aesthetically pleasing way. My currently problem is how to deal with the vertical blinds with matching vinyl valance covering the patio door. I'm lucky to have 14 foot ceilings over the sliding door, but I'm at a loss for what to replace the vertical blinds with. Any suggestions?

    Lots of inaccuracies in this clip; you can tell the narrator is young and doesn’t know much about anything before the 2000s.

    Everyone here has vertical blinds because you don't want people looking in the house. Not every home has that sort of privacy.

      There are better choices like curtains and rolling shades.

      @@vaderladyl The problem with curtains is that they aren't closed all day and people will be staring in your living room. Same with roller blinds.

      @@04nbod That is true. Maybe if you put curtains with a second semi sheer layer like I have in my home or installing curtains and privacy film on the door glass. Only need to close at night.

      @@ladyjedi21 That used to be very popular here in the UK. Lace curtains, we called them Net curtains. About 20 years ago they went out of fashion and that is when the verticals took over. They were seen as granny-ish

      @@04nbod I guess some people see classic and traditional as grannish, even though it has been trending back now aka Grandmillenial, cottage core and such ,but to each their own.
      You might not have a lot of choices to cover windows but one of those rolling shades and a privacy film on the glass then.
