คนลาวปัจจุบันยังเข้าใจผิดว่า เป็นเพลงที่แต่งโดยคนลาว ที่หมายถึง ลาวเวียงจัน ในปัจจุบัน เพราะมีคำว่า "ลาว" หรือ มีคนลาวบางคนบอกว่าทำไมไม่ตั้งชื่อว่า ไทย ซะด้วยซ้ำ ทั้งที่ความจริง คำว่า ลาว ในที่นี้คือ ชาวล้านนา เรียกตัวเองว่า ลาวและไม่เคยเรียกอย่างอื่นนอกจากลาว แปลว่า ผู้เป็นใหญ่ ผู้เป็นนาย มีฐานะเทียบคำในลุ่มน้ำเจ้าพระยาภาคกลางว่า ขุนและกษัตริย์ ดังเห็นทั่วไปในคำนำหน้านามเจ้านายเชื่อวงศ์ปกครองบ้านเมืองเก่าแก่ในตำนานพงศาวดาร เช่น ลาวเจือง (คือ ท้าวเจือง ท้าวฮุ่ง) ลาวเมง (คือ บิดาพระยามังราย) เมื่อปฏิรูปการปกครองราว พ.ศ. 2435 สมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 บริเวณล้านนาได้ชื่อเป็นลาวว่า มณฑลลาวเฉียง ครั้น พ.ศ. 2442 มีปัญหาทางการเมืองกับเจ้าอาณานิคม จึงให้ยกเลิกคำว่าลาว แล้วเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นมณฑลตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือ แต่สำนึกของคนทั่วไปในภาคกลาง เช่น กรุงเทพฯ ยังเรียกคนเชียงใหม่และบริเวณล้านนาทั้งหมดเป็น ลาว ซึ่งเป็นคนละ บริเวณกับ ลาวเวียงจัน

The reason why the Princess 's father didn't want her to married with the Prince was, he was afraid that the Prince might had already had the fiance or wife in Bangkok. And when the Prince came back to Bangkok with his daughter, his daughter would be a minor wife which would be dishonored to her. At that time, the polygamy was widely practiced in Siam, especially the royalties or aristocrats who had many wives and concubines. So, he denied the marriage. The Prince finally married the Siamese Princess and had 1 concubine. He had 3 children, 2 sons and 1 daughter. His daughter was the first Thai royalty who relinqhised the title to marry the commoner as required by the amended Palace Law after the Siamese Revolution of 1932. His male - line descendants use the surname Benbadhana after his name.

At that time, Siam was in the period of modernization and nation-state building. Before that period, Siam used the idea of Mandala or sphere of influence over the vessel states . In this context, the power of the capital was like the candle light. The farer kingdoms, the less power of the capital. The capital let the vessel states governed their internal issues, but they had to sent the tributes to the capital. The term "Vassal State" is a term for a pre-modern state in a particular type of subordinate relationship to a more powerful state which involved the sending of a regular token of submission, or tribute, to the superior power. The tribute was the valuable things such as gold or other valuable resources. In the cases of many ancient Southeast Asian states, the Vassal states had the autonomy to control most of their interior affairs, but had to send the tribute to the bigger states in the designated occasions and had to support the bigger states when the bigger states had wars with other states. In many cases, the tributary states sent the younger members of their Royal Families to the bigger states to assure their loyalty to the bigger states. The male members or Princes would be sent to study in the capital and work in the bureaucratic system. The female members or Princesses would also be sent to study in the capital, many of them became concubines of the Kings or married with the Princes of the bigger states. Chiang Mai was also in this relationship with Siam. In the 19th Century, the Western colonial powers came to Asian, to protect such invasion, Siam had to reform the Kingdom, including making a map to show the sovereignty of Siam over the areas to protect such areas from the the Western Powers. To consolidate the Siamese power, Siam abolished the Mandala and sent the governors from Bangkok to control the areas directly. Even the Chiang Mai royalties were still exist, but their power decresed. For summary, Chiang Mai was formally annexed with Siam in the 19th Century.
I think that you're well versed on Tai's art & history. I'm Lao living in the USA since December 1979. I'm in my 50s now, I would like to ask you some questions. Why today's Thais are aggressively denying its culture & heritage with Khmer's? While embracing Tais' but not recognizing Laos'? I watched Thai PBS episode on Tais in China, but they speak Lao with Chinese's accent.😮 And I was surprised to know that Tai & Isaan languages are recognized, but not Lao! Isaan isn't a language. Isaan was the middle kingdom of Lan Xang, and was known as "the rice bowl of Lan Xang). Lanna & Lan Xang (Luang Pra Bang) are same people (Tai Lue). My DNA may be Lao but I'm an American culturally, and just wanting to expand my understanding. Thanks
I have some questions for you. Can you illustrate or show the historical events and data to show Siamese were the true Thais? Why Siamese were so in denial its roots, culture, language, etc, to Khmer's? Why Siam so utterly rejected and not given any credits to Lanna and Lan Xang's of their art, culture, and languages.
In my opinion, Lanna and Lan Xang were the true Thais, not Siam. I think, during the "Sukothai" era, the Royal family was Tai that's why Lan Xang didn't conquer Sukothai because Sukothai, Lanna and Lan Xang were the same ethnic Tais. For example, king or Jao Fa Samsantai "3 hundred thousand tais" was named after Lan Xang's Army size. Lanna and Lan Xang called themselves Tais and they spoke today's Lao dialects. But I think Burmese killed most of the Sukothai era royal family members, then the power went back to Siamese royal family once again.
China's Tang dynasty 600yrs ago, didn't not record any historical data as "Tais" but as "Ai Lao". During this period, Khmer was the super power and today's Bangkok region was the home of Khmer people. The Tais=Laos were the newly immigrants in the region, but until 1900s, Tais were outnumbered the Siamese. That was why Siam changed to Thailand in 1939 for political stability. Thailand had to rewrite its history as 100% Tai origin; but in Lao language "tai" means common folk or people, not as language or as ethnic. Just like English is a language of the British people and British isn't a language.

why is it written in lao accent rather than lanna accent.
At the time, Lanna people was misunderstood by the Siamese people that they were Lao since they had similar culture with Lao or Lan Xang people. The misunderstanding was cleared in the 20th that they are different ethnic group with similar culture.
There was no misunderstanding of Lan Xang and Lanna in the Rattanakosin bureaucracy as Laos. You have to look at the big picture to see that in the past there was no clear nation-state boundary like today, which is Lanna, Lan Xang, Tai Yai, to Xishuangbanna. They are close to each other in both language and culture, clearly different from Thailand in the central region. From all of the above, it is not wrong to call them Laos. In northern Thailand there is also a river named Mae Lao and a mountain range named Khao Dan Lao. You have to accept cultural and historical facts.

@@LA109plda It's called "Lao Duang Duen" instead of "Duang Duen" because it's connected to the Lanna region, its culture, traditions, and musical style. Prince Benbadhanabongse added some words from the Lao Language to pay homage to Princess Chomchuen's native dialect. For example, the opening phrase "Oh-la-naw" in "Lao Duang Duen" is inspired by Lao vocal folk music.
It's challenging to attribute this song solely to Thai, Laos, or Cambodia due to centuries of cultural interaction. These influences have resulted in similar artworks and music while still maintaining their unique regional differences (in interpretation and form).
Lana (one of the Tais) and Lan Xan (kingdom of all Tais) are the same people and speak the same language "Lao" but speaking with slightly different accent. All Tais language is Lao. But Siamese is Khmer ethnic and language is Khmer+Hindi.

The reason that the song title starts with the word “Lao” is completely a matter of Thai classical song classification. Many compositions in Thai classical music are classified according to a foreign “accent.” I would say the highest number of these songs are classified with a Lao accent, but there’s also Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Khmer, Mon, Burmese, Indian/Persian/Arabic, Javanese, Western (mostly American influences), and I guess technically Thai (any song without an accent classification).
If a song has a foreign accent classification, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it came directly from that culture. It could be because of the drum pattern used or even just because of mood or emotional association of the song.
For example, within the Lao classification, some songs like “Lao Phaen” and “(Lao) Soom” are actual Lao melodies, songs like “Lao Duang Dok Mai” and “Lao Sieng Tien” are adapted from folk tunes from the Chiang Mai area, and others like “Lao Duang Deuan” and “Lao Khruan” are Thai compositions that are named “Lao” because of some personal or emotional association.
Siamese were one of the Khmer ethnics and Siamese language was mixed mainly Khmer, Hindi and Lao. Tai means people, tribe, or ethnic and Tais speak Lao; in 1800s, Siam aggressively divided and conquered Tais=Laos. For centuries, Tais or Laos were subjugated, divided & conquered by Siamese, Burmese, Chinese, vietnamese and Khmer. By 20th century, Tais were greatly outnumbered Siamese, and in 1939, Siam was changed to "Thailand" and Tais continue to worship Siamese king. In 1930s, the Tais who were under French were named "Lao" after the language of all Tais speak. Today, Tais or Laos have no monarchy. History has a funny way of interference between the Prince & Princess doesn't it?
Thai is Tai that is it. Same language. Whatever they call themselves. Siam or whatever... The language is a root for communication from past to present. It doesn't lie itself. If they are Khmer they will speak Khmer as a second language but not! Noone understand Khmer. But yes there are some borrow word. Anyway not everthing. That is why Cambodia can understand Thai or Tai language. Only some people in some province near Cambodia border use it.

During the1200s Lan Xang, and Lan Na were rich and populated; Jao Fa (king) Sarmsantai ( 3 hundred thousand Tais) , he was named after the mighty army of Lan Xang. Why Lan Xang called its people "Tai"? Where were the Laotians? Did Lan Na and Lan Xang speak Lao or Tai? Let me put it this way, Tai (Tai Lue, Puan, Dam, Cao, Deng, etc.) is like British (Scot, Irish, Welch, Wales, etc.), and Tai or British means people. Lao and English are language, and both languages have wide range of accents and dialects. But today's Tais' belief is "Bangkokian" accent is the true Tai. But if you take Lao, Khmer, Hindi words out from Tai then what words are left in Tai language? Lao language doesn't depend on having Khmer and Hindi or Tai words to speak with each other. Lao can speak with Tai Lue in China, and Tai Dam & Cao in Vietnam with no problems.
