  • Fly fishing a small Dartmoor stream for feisty little wild brown trout. Apologies for some of the camera work, it is vitally important to stay out of sight as much as possible on these clear streams and some times I forgot about the camera and got some lovely footage of the boulder that I was hiding behind?

Nothing I love more than a relaxing fly fishing video of someone enjoying the outdoors and loving every catch.

Another enjoyable one Chris. You are quite right about the size of fish - basically you catch fish of the size that are in the water. It seems that these days everyone expects to catch "big" fish and so they fish places where "big" fish are stocked and are then pleased with themselves for catching these fish. There seems to be no understanding that a big part of the sport is finding the secret places that hold good fish, and finding that these places often change from year to year, and that some years you never find the big fish. On top of that when you do find a big fish then it is often 1lb, sometimes even 1/2lb depending on location, and for most people fishing in wild places a 4lb or 6lb trout will only happen once in a lifetime.

Glad your enjoying them, if the weather ever sorts itself out I might get back there. The season appears to be on hold for the moment.

So delightful. My kind of stream and small scale fly fishing. :-)

Many thanks, yes the fish may not be very big but the charm of the place more than makes up for it.

@@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 I agree. The whole experience is the thing. I done;t think big fish should ever be the main game! :-)

Magical place, Chris! This is really selling Dartmoor, especially to those accustomed to pellet fed rainbows and manicured "micro managed" fisheries. Still working my way through the catalogue! 😊

Magical is a good description David, Dartmoor can easily cast its spell on you! I still enjoy fishing stocked lakes/reservoirs but top of the list has to be wild trout in wild places. Well as wild as we can get in this country anyway.

That's a tricky one, my father got permission from someone many years ago (or at least he told me he had,) and I've fished it ever since with no problems. It's public access for dog walking etc.. lower down is mentioned in Theo Pikes book as being free fishing so.....??

@@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 I appreciate your reply I’ve been planning a fishing trip to Dartmoor for ages maybe won’t make it this season but definitely next year I will be going I’m from Leicestershire is there any chance you could point me in the direction of some decent beats to fish while I’m there

Well Adam it depends what the conditions are at the time, in normal times anywhere on the Duchy water can fish well, when the water gets low I tend to head higher up ( East Dart at Postbridge for example). The Tavy Walkham and Plym association also have some nice beats and only £15 for a weekly ticket. Give me a shout nearer the time and we can have a chat about how it's fishing. For some reason the catch returns website westcountryangling.com/catch-return/
Isn't updated anymore but it might give you an idea.

I gather, you couldn't find much Easier, and more Open Terrain to Fish in?!

It's not too bad with a 6' 2 weight but you do spend a fair amount of time on your knees praying to the trout gods! It opens up a bit further up on to the Moor, just a shame it's such a hike. Other rivers I fish are more open with easier casting but not half as much fun!

@@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 - Back in my younger days, I would take time and walk the Stream in both ways just to see where Fishing is best, and take it from there! Although, I used Bamboo Rods of 5 to 7feet of length!
