Feds introduce legislation to change sex offender registry, empower victims

  • The federal government introduced legislation that would change the Criminal Code to give victims of sexual assault the opportunity to opt out of publication bans. Publication bans are intended to protect sexual assault victims by prohibiting the publication of information that could identify them publicly in relation to their case. Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada David Lametti says the new legislation allows victims to make their identities public when they are ready to tell their story.
