There's an Easter egg in the scene where Jayne is interrogating the cop. He's disappointed because he was hoping to get an ear (one of the cop's). “It’s getting awful crowded in my sky”
That is worth remembering for Mal’s character throughout this series. He fought the Alliance for the right to freely choose his lifestyle and not be under their control but he lost. He got a ship and left his life behind to life a difficult life but a free one. The theme song tells his viewpoint on his current life, especially the ‘you can’t take the sky from me’ part. But he is slowly squeezed between larger powers whilst trying to survive and keep his crew safe.

It’s often described as a Space Western, but I find the words Space Frontier seem to fit better. It’s about people pushing out from civilisation and becoming more basic due to rules and education being less important than just survival at the moment. The Alliance is civilisation catching up with them (and basically forcing itself on them).

The reason there is a "Western" feel to this show is that there are a whole bunch of planets that were recently terraformed (made like Earth). There really isn't enough people to fill up all these worlds, they are expanding out into them. So there is a bit of a frontier vibe to everything, the laws, the people, etc.
The Reavers wouldn't set foot on a military planet without getting obliterated but a newly formed one, yes.

I remember when this first aired. I watched the first 15 minutes of it and thought "Nope. Not for me".
    ..
Then, about 10 years later, house sitting for relatives, board out of my skull, I found the entire series on DVD at the local video store. So I rented it.
    ..
Forced my way through the first episode. And was, like you, pleasantly surprised! :)
Watched the next, and then binged all of them that day.
Firefly became one of my all-time favourite "sci-fi series".
    ..
After this one, if you want another REALLY GOOD sci-fi... check out "The Expanse".
    ..
(no, it's not 'cowboys in space', much more science fiction...but it has a very "reality grounded" style and backdrop).

Term originates from cold war submarines - Russian boomers (ICBM launchers) were shadowed by US attack subs ready to launch torpedos, should the boomer go to launch position...
W/o a towed sonar array, a sub is pretty much deaf/blind directly to the rear, so the boomer would periodicallyexecute an as tight as possible turn in order to get the bow sonars pointing back towards anyone following, trying to detect them.

You will soon be a Browncoat, V!!! Welcome to the fold of fans of 'Firefly'. We're so happy to see you here!!!
Alan Tudyk (Wash) has been in tons of things both in front of the camera and as a voice artist. He was the voices of King Candy in 'Wreck-it Ralph', The Duke of Wesleton in 'Frozen'. Haihai in 'Moana' and was the droid K-2SO in 'Rogue One'. Onscreen...'A Knight's Tale' with Heath Ledger, 'Dodgeball', and '28 Days'. He is an accomplished and amazing scene steeler without trying to.
Basically, Joss Whedon came up with the idea of the show after reading the novel 'The Killer Angels' by Michael Shaara, which was entirely about the three days of The Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. He thought about what a sci-fi show set after a galactic civil war would look like. Also, another influence for this was a western from 1939 called 'Stagecoach' starring John Wayne.
It didn't happen in this episode, but be on the lookout for when characters start speaking Chinese...there are reasons. One...the show is set after the unification of the last superpowers of Earth-That-Was joined to take humanity to the stars after the ecological collapse of the planet. The nations were the US and China. Everyone speaks both English and Chinese...usually using Chinese for their really foul cussing. And when you find out some of what they say in the episodes...Two...yeah, it's stuff they would not be allowed to say in English on network tv.
To really understand a "Crazy Ivan", it comes from the submarine thriller 'The Hunt For Red October' starring Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin. While submerged, Russian submarine captains will sometimes turn suddenly, to "see" if anyone is behind them using their sonar. It's called a Crazy Ivan. In the case of 'Firefly', it's because the ship has two engines that can move, making the ship turn real fast.
    Thanks for the awesome reaction!!!!

I remember falling in love with the universe and dialogue from this show the first time I saw this episode, and nothing has changed since.
Also, what happened when they escaped the Reavers at the end is normally a ship uses thrusters to move beyond the atmosphere before engaging the main engines When they engaged them before leaving atmo(sphere), it ignited the atmosphere causing the huge firestorm that we saw as they left the planet.

Since this was aired last instead of first, the opening credits are the same as the rest of the episodes, which unfortunately gave away all of the surprises/twists. It also meant that the second episode features re-introductions of all the characters.

Yay! Thank you so much for doing Firefly - this is such a good series and you are a great reactor! I just love the insanely good worldbuilding Joss Whedon manages to accomplish in 14 eps.
BTW, the backstory is that Earth's resources got "used up" so humanity moved to another solar system, one with a lot of planets. At this point the dominant world cultures were American and Chinese, so the language is a mixture of English and Mandarin. The outer planets rebelled against the Alliance of the inner planets, and in the war shown in the beginning of this episode the inner planets crushed the rebels ("Browncoats") and extended power to the outer planets. However out on these "frontier" planets the Alliance doesn't have as much presence and there is more freedom, so defeated browncoat rebels like Mal and Zoey prefer to live there.

Hmmm, I wouldn't exactly call Mal's view as 'glass half full' kind of guy. Glass half full is seen as optimistic. Mal's not really an optimistic type. He doesn't say it's good. He says it's enough. To Mal everything is bad. It's a big bad universe and they end up with the short straw most of the time. But still flying is at least something. It's not optimistic because it's "we didn't win one, but we're still flying" or "we didn't come out ahead, but we're still flying" and Serenity and flying is Mal's freedom from the Alliance control.
Those lines have actually gotten me through some hard times. Things get really bad sometimes. Still Flying, it's enough.
