The movie is amazing too. As in one of the best scifi movies ever, according to a poll I did on my blog about ten years ago. Right up there with Logan's Run and Bladerunner.
If you like character-driven, it's difficult to beat Joss Whedon.

Still an appalling waste of talent that this series was instantly axed - I had hope that it would be like the original Star Trek where the suits closed the door and the weight of fan reaction kicked it open again ... but we were denied so we have only a single, treasured, bottle of this glorious mixture (even it was just Josh Whedon ripping off my Traveller campaign from the early 80's :D).
I apologize, but everyone who has seen the series was absolutely laughing along with the crew during your reaction to Mal's prank.

I remember Joss Whedon said he was worried about shooting the scene that showed River (Summer Glau) lying in the cryogenic box because he knew he had to handle a scene involving nudity with great sensitivity, but Summer Glau immediately eased the tension when she climbed into the box and asked "Does this make me look fat?"

This has me so confused. Sure, when it first aired Fox did it in the wrong order but that was 18 years ago. I don't understand how it's possible to watch it in anything other than the proper order now. Is there some kind of Fox order DVD? Does Fox still show it in their order? It makes no sense.
Sokar Rostau I’ve seen it listed in aired order more than once. For instance www.epguides.com/Firefly has it than way. Of course, that’s a TV series episode guide, so it makes sense. But still, plenty of people consult things like that. I would think reactors even more so.
@@sokar_rostau The streaming services normally make them available in aired order by default.
@@randall-king Yup - and things like Plex and other media servers use agents to look up stuff on tvdb, epguides etc etc, so it still happens. It took me a long while to put in a hidden field in Plex and sort on that after I ripped my BR to it. I'd have to keep looking up what the order was supposed to be (I knew the first two).

Which is hilarious since she almost certainly votes for big government politicians.
Jayne was completely rude yes, but his character is kind of hard to get at first. Notice how he wanted to murder the fed right after kaylee was shot. Then how he was hunkered down drying his eyes outside the infirmary while she was being operated on. He loves her very much like a little sister he gets to pick on. It may not be right but it’s the family of Serenity.
Just wait until she sees "The Hero of Canton" episode.
Hugs her shoulder, kisses the top of her head, busts her chops. Just like any big brother does to his little sister. You totally nailed it!
@Cliven Longsight He doesn't want-her want her, it ain't like that, he's just open to banging anything with a pulse. He's attracted to her but he's way more protective of her than anything else. He just doesn't show that side openly because he'd rather be gruff and vulgar to hide it.

Mal and the crew laughing about Kaylee being "dead", was the moment that I fell in love with the show.
Yeah, the gallows humor of the crew is infectious.

Welcome to the Browncoats. You're going to become a fan of this series, because its the type of show that you become a fan of kind of automatically just by watching. Its that good. Complex characters, complex stories, and enough chemistry among the cast you can make explosives out of them. The first episode has hints of things that will be explored in later episodes and in the Big Damned Movie. Mal's strength of character, Zoe's devotion to not only Mal but to Wash as well. Wash's absolute skill as a pilot. Jayne's particular code of honor. Shepherd Book and how it is he seems so good at fighting. Inara being more than her profession. Kaylee. Just Kaylee. And of course the Tam siblings.
Welcome aboard. The ride's worth it.
This comment is beautifully worded, and does as much justice to the show as a short comment can. I love how you said "Kaylee. Just Kaylee." lol.
Personally, my biggest travesty about the show -- other than the cancellation itself -- is that we didn't get at least five more minutes of screen time for Kaylee at The Shindig once she's chatting with the group of men. I could easily and delightedly watch a whole episode of just that scene extended. XD
I predict Natalie will be a Brown Coat by the end of this tragically short series...

This was the "2 hour" pilot. so no, the rest are broken into standard T.V. format.

One thing I've noticed about Natalie is while watching most movies she calls the actors by their real name most of the time. This episode had barely begun and she was calling them by their character names, which says to me she's invested in them already!

God, this show is such an underrated classic. I think you'll love every second of it. Make sure you watch the film "Serenity" when you're finished with the main series!

@@gryphon0468 No I'm not. I say "underrated" because apparently Joss Whedon didn't think it was worthy to continue the show after only one season. Literally only the outrage from us fans was what prompted him to make the Serenity movie.

Love that you actually react to the show. Lots of react videos don't really relay opinions or express anything other than "Oh, great episode." It's fun to watch someone actually have opinions on this show and the characters and express them while watching. Like how you wanted to hate Simon and thought he was the Fed because that's the intention of the way it was written. Then falling for the Kaylie death scene. Absolute gold.

He is kind of an arrogant prick though. It's not really his fault though, he was brought up in luxury and doesn't really know how to deal with real folks.
That's why this show is so good though. Simon's not perfect and neither is anyone else. The characters act like real people and that makes you root for them.
@@JakkFrost1 If instead of being protective to a heightened, but still rational level he's _too_ protective, would that not make him "overly" protective? The difference between a chaperone and a chastity belt, for instance?
@@swrennie sure it would, but he's not, is my point. He's _highly_ protective, for very valid and rational reasons. He's not keeping her locked in her room and pointing a gun at any man who tries to talk to her.
He _is_ a bit of a prick, but so is Mal. And Zoe, and Jayne. The outer systems is not a place for refined and delicate people, unless they have someone to protect them.
He is a fish out of water with a responsibility he doesn't really know how to handle. He would much rather be back in the central systems doing what he does best and is respected for. He loves his sister and would lay down his life for her, but the exile and the constant need to look over his shoulder is grating. He basically walks alone: his sister is only occasionally able to stand by his side.
If only some kind, clever, down-to-earth but still romantic woman with a sunny disposition would take his hand and help him make a new home for himself in the outer systems, but what are the odds for that?
I always get SO jealous when someone is watching this for the first time. Then again, I appreciate each episode more every time I watch them!Firefly becomes family. Welcome to the family Natalie! ✨💕

I look at it like a limited series. At least SERENITY finished the story.

I know that there's no second season, so if I start it, but then if the series ends without answering anything and stuff, it'll be disappointment even if the series is really good. I just need to know if there's a proper conclusion to it so that I can feel satisfied. It'll be a huge help to know that.

I'm so excited you're watching this show. The characters, the world-building, the writing... Just one season and one movie to finish it off, but it's got a devoted fan base because they created such an amazing story.
There's enough story in this one season to fill an entire series of any other show. The writing is dense!

The pilot was originally aired as 2 episodes, that's why it's so long.

Specter177 Yep. If I remember correctly it’s the last thing Fox aired, right? Good lord did they bungle this show to such an absurd degree.
As others noted, this was originally aired as the last episode by fox. This was dubbed too slow to be the pilot. The train job was written over a weekend to give time to shoot it.
@@JeffKelly03 To be honest, I cant see anybody messing it up to this degree accidentally. They tanked it on purpose. They probably had no faith in it and already had decided to cancel it before it aired so they basically messed it up on purpose so the numbers would justify their decision.
@@NikstSWE Not so much that they had no faith in it than it was picked up by producers who then left Fox before it aired, can't remember if they were ousted or left voluntarily. The producers who replaced them didn't want it to be successful since it wasn't their idea.
In terms of character development and just full on coolness of the crew, Firefly is one of the best sci fi series ever made. One single iconic season.
As a long time Browncoat, I thoroughly enjoyed watching you experience this with fresh eyes. My first cosplay was as Mal and Firefly will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you for being so open and honest with your feelings on the 1st (original pilot) episode. You made this so much fun for me! You now have a new subscriber.
Seriously this show is just so good. Hell, I made my Red Dead Redemption characters (both Arthur and my online character) wear Mal's costume a tribute to it.

Alan Tudyk's "This Land" speech was NOT in the script. It was actually from his audition, it wasn't a part of the line reading. He just came in with these two dinosaurs, and launched into it.

I watched your review of Our Mrs Reynolds the other day and it immediately got me to sub to your channel. LIke a lot of people it was my favorite episode. I watched the series when it originally aired and have re-watched it many times over the years. Seeing it again through someone else eyes is a real pleasure. I'm now going back and watching them again in proper order and then watching your reactions one at a time.
This pilot episode does make me mad all over again remembering how FOX screwed the show from the start. If only they had shown this first it might have had a much better chance of catching on. Our Mrs Reynolds was originally aired 3rd and one reason it's my favorite is because it took that long for the show to jell for me. Without seeing this two parter first, it took that long to figure out who the characters were and what the show was about.

An Ivan is a reference to pulling a Crazy Ivan, it's a submarine manoeuver similar to a Sprint & Drift where you go full speed, cut propulsion and boot full rudder (in order to check your baffles, anything behind).
Umm, no, no it isn't ...LOL!
A Crazy Ivan for submarines is just a sharp turn at a random moment to make sure no one's behind you. It has nothing to do with full speed, full rudder, or cutting engines at all.
I was a maneuver developed by the Russian submariners (hence "crazy Ivan" ) to check to see if any US subs were following behind, i.e. in their baffles . The counter to the crazy Ivan was for the US sub to cut power and drift forward as the Russian sub passed around behind them.

My favorite series. Lightning in a bottle for one perfect season. It is a crime it didn't at least go three seasons if not more but at least we have this one very good season and a great film.
It's so much fun watching you go through the series for the first time. Some days I wish I could erase my memory of the show and have that experience again myself. You're in for truly memorable stories and characters. I'll definitely be back as you go through the rest of the series!

The movie Serenity answers a lot that didn’t get answered during the series.
Also - fun fact: whenever the characters are speaking chinese, they are swearing, and quite creatively, too. This was the show's way of getting past censorship (ironic, innit?) by having all the curses uttered in a foreign language.
My favorite Chinese curse was "Baboon's ass crack".

Not always swearing. For one example, *Mei mei* is used often and means (loosely) little sister.

Ok about Inara's syringe:
In a 2012 Science Channel special about “Firefly,” series writer and executive producer Tim Minnear explained:
"She had this magic syringe. She would take this drug. And if she were, for instance, raped, the rapist would die a horrible death. The story was that she gets kidnapped by Reavers and when Mal finally got to the ship to save her from the Reavers, he gets on the Reaver ship and all the Reavers are dead. Which would suggest a kind of really bad assault. At the end of the episode, he comes in after she's been horribly brutalized, and he comes in and he gets down on his knee, and he takes her hand. And he treats her like a lady. And that's the kind of stuff that we wanted to do. It was very dark. And this was actually the first story that Joss pitched to me when he asked me to come work on the show. He said, 'These are the kind of stories we're going to do.'"
I want to cry at the thought we never got that 2nd season.
Best sumup of this series I read was "It's like _Star Wars_ only Han Solo is the main character and he *absolutely* would shoot first"
If you like this series you will have to go on to _Buffy the Vampire Slayer_ afterwards
not really... This is a whole different ball park than the main stream overhyped Buffy.
Love how much you hated Simon at the beginning. Every character in this show is amazing and interesting, and so quotable. Joss Whedon (Avengers, Buffy, etc) is a genius when it comes to characters.

I was not 100% sold on the series from the first ep. By the SECOND ep, right after Mal say's 'darn'... THAT was when I was 100% in. I am SOOOO excited that you're getting to experience this for the first time.

My sister was obsessed with this show! She used to have a VHS copy of an episode she recorded. Really sucks that they cancelled it after 13 Episodes, but I'm glad you're watching this series.
Fox didn't advertise it at all so I didn't even know about it until the last couple of episodes. Plus they kept changing the time slot around. Then they wonder why it got bad ratings.
I hope you guys watched the Serenity movie. It basically tied up the series, at least where River was concerned
@@3DJapan and they aired it out of order. They felt the pilot didn't have enough action so they aired the train job as the first episode. So we never got an official introduction. This episode never aired with the first run if I remember correctly. It was either in reruns or not until it got a dvd release that we got all the episodes in correct order.

He also did a comedy series called Con Man where he makes fun of his life after this series. There's 25 episodes, about 10 mins each. I don't think it's something you need to react to, but you might enjoy watching it after you've finished watching Firefly.
Are those on TH-cam? I heard him mention it in a Con panel, but haven't seen it.

Con Man was a web series. The first season was published through Vimeo and the second was only available on Comic Con's own service.
As a backer for the original I have a DVD copy of season one (which is backed up in my Google drive 😉).
Some excellent moments in there and lots of great cameos. Highly recommended to anyone who is a firefly / con fan etc.

Even though the series was only one season, it was so loved by the fans that the director later brought the cast together and made a move with the help of the fan community called 'Serenity' that concludes everything. You should watch that after the series, it has the most epic space fight in sci-fi history. :)

You had me at "First Time Watching Firefly". Not going to lie you are in for a roller-coaster of emotions with this series. A friend loaned me the dvds, after this episode I went out and bought my own copy..... It hooked me right from the start. I may have binge watched all your Star Wars and Mandalorian reaction vids after the Firefly ones. Can't wait to see the rest for this show. No power in the 'verse can stop you!

Then after Firefly watch Cowboy Bebop. Cowboy Bebop did the space cowboy thing first but it doesn't really matter they are both great shows.
It would have my vote. Bebop is one of the first shows I watched that made me think "wow, this is art" and has lead me to analyzing film and animation more critically.

Firefly is one of the best science fiction series to ever air. Unfortunately, the decision was made to air them out of order, and change the airtime from week to week, keeping anyone from being able to follow it well. It therefore didn't do well ratings-wise and was canceled prematurely. When you're done with this series, if you want to see some loose ends tied up, watch the motion picture finale that was made: Serenity.
I knew this series wasn't like the others when that one scene with the fed/hostage situation, you're expecting a drawn-out negotiation; but instead Mal is like "mm NOPE, murdered you, moving on now..."
Mal shooting the Fed was such a great move, and I saw it as "I ain't got the time for this s---"
The DVD treatment of this series is superb. ALL the episodes, including unaired, in the right order, plus extras.
Okay, so- I love reaction videos. And FIREFLY is one of my favorite shows of all time. So when I saw this suggested, I laughed to myself and said out loud; "If this reviewer is any good at all, I'll be crying for 20 minutes."
Let's just say- tissues were required and I'll be watching the next episode review shortly!

Man, this is one of the best sci-fi series to ever make it to air. It's really a shame it was cancelled after Season 1, but the movie Serenity was a MONSTROUSLY great time. I actually saw that before watching the series, and fell in love with the characters, the world, the whole premise. Yes, there will be some unanswered questions throughout the series, but make sure you watch the movie afterwards. Such a great conclusion to the story.

Love the show, but I think Serenity is the best thing the show's universe ever produced. A fantastic conclusion, clearly worthy of celebration given the show's struggles.
The best thing about this show for me is that everyone's flawed, and fatally flawed. The pilot episode absolutely exposes the flaws that could easily get each of the characters killed in a moment. Everyone's got depth, even more than can be seen in one season. Even Jayne, who seems so shallow and simple a character, has moments where he isn't. It was kinda brilliant and so it didn't last. But, on the plus side, it went out still being good to great, which is better than some long-running shows can say.
Also, the various Firefly references that were worked into Nathan Fillion's next show Castle were awesome Easter Eggs to catch, like the second season of Castle's Halloween episode. :-D
I'm not certain if we're talking about the same episode. But we very well could be. My favorite Castle episode was the Sci-fi convention that had overt references to Firefly in it. Best Castle episode ever!

So glad you've decided to watch this series, it was short-lived by had a huge loyal fan following which ultimately resulted in the movie being released. Save your questions, most will be answered in time. And like other sci-fi films, it isn't without its kleenex moments.

I remember rewatching Firefly a while ago a bit older, and the scene where they find Summer in the cryo box just threw me in an uncontrollable crying fit.
