JBL 9.1 Dolby Atmos Soundbar Review - Everything you need to know!

  • UPDATE:
    The HDMI eARC issue I mentioned actually seems like a firmware issue. When you turn off eARC mode on your TV, you will NOT get Dolby Atmos! It will only give Dolby Digital Plus. I will keep this video description updated if this gets fixed.
    UPDATE 2:
    After turning on eARC mode, the issue still remains. But instead of resetting the soundbar, I turned off and on eARC mode on the TV and it brings the sounds back. It's not a permanent solution, but better than listening to 5.1 sounds.
    UPDATE 3:
    At some point, turning on and off eARC mode didn't solve it. So I had to reset the soundbar. 😥
    Here is the full review of the JBL Bar 9.1 Dolby Atmos (5.1.4) soundbar.

    JBL 9.1 Dolby Atmos soundbar is one of the best home theatre systems you can buy which delivers (almost) the same quality as a cinema.

    I just got this sound bar around a week ago and i feel that the biggest drawback is that it doesn't have a voice enhancement feature that you get on other sound bars. This is not an issue when you watch normal movies/shows however content that is heavy with action just ends up drowning/muffling the dialogue. Reducing the bass and increasing the volume output doesn't really help in such situations. I also think its ludicrous that JBL has provided only 5 levels of bass adjustment to arrive at that sweet spot. Its a decent sound bar but honestly speaking for the money it costs i would call it an average performer when it comes to sound quality especially for a sound bar that boasts of 13 drivers excluding the subwoofer.

    Thank you for the review, I think the messy shortcuts that you need to undetake for simple functions is a realy problem. And that you cannot configure the equeliser or the volume of each speaker seperatly...But all of this could be fixed if they bring out an app to control the configuration of the bar, with a simple firmware update they can open the bar for commands.

    Please advise. Do rear speakers really work flawlessly? Does connecting an Apple TV 4K directly to the HDMI of the JBL work fine and streaming apps such as Disney plus or Netflix show Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision? I am scared to buy it since lots of people have connection, malfunctions and apple tv atmos problems

    • @GnomezGrave
      @GnomezGrave  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never had any noticable issues with the rear speakers, except for the comparatively low volume. I think it's by design. So I keep them closer.
      I don't have an Apple TV, so I can't comment on that. But, if you connect anything directly to the TV, it should be fine.
      Then you need to adjust some settings on your TV to change the audio type. After that, Netflix and Amazon prime will show Atmos. Disney+ doesn't show the audio format, so you have to Google it anyway.

Regarding the rear speakers, really are they too low? Have read lots of people return and get other jbl soundbar units because the first ones came defective

    • @GnomezGrave
      @GnomezGrave  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @GnomezGrave  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will try to test the Apple TV problem. But if you have a defective device, you can get a replacement without an issue. I did that.
      About the rear speakers, they're not super quiet. They're comparatively quiet. Probably 50% of what you hear from front speakers. So you have to increase the overall volume to properly hear them. I didn't find it a huge problem TBH.

    Boss 700 or jbl 9.1?? Which is best

    • @GnomezGrave
      @GnomezGrave  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bose 700 doesn't have Dolby Atmos. So, if you need Atmos, go for JBL 9.1. If you need good 5.1 sound, go for Bose 700.

    Hello! remember me? quick questions for JBL 9.1 / Apple TV 4K streaming / Samsung ARC NU7090. Ok so have has your experience been so far with Dolby Atmos using Apple TV 4K and JBL 9.1? so many people talking about the audio drop outs and issues with eARC tv. Btw my current Samsung tv is ARC and this year I want to buy an eARC tv! I am afraid since I dont want the soundbar and apple tv to fail. Can you give me best settings, installation, glitch fixes for the JBL? upon setting it up whjat are the first things I have to do with the Wi Fi and Calibration? I stream Netflix, Disney +, and Itunes movies for Dolby Atmo fyi. Please help me! its an expensive system and its a big deal for me.

      @GnomezGrave  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I still don't have an Apple TV 4K and I don't think I ever will.
      But... This sound bar have started giving me a lot of audio drop outs recently. The audio just goes away, but it's only for Dolby Atmos contents. Everything works fine for 5.1 or PCM. Then I have to turn off and on eARC mode on my TV for it to bring back audio. Sometimes I even have to unpluand plug back the soundbar as well. I hope they will fix it with an update soon. So I would wait buying. If you have more cash, go with the Samsung Q90R soundbar.
      Regarding the calibration, it's quite simple. You can connect it to WiFi from your Google Home app without a proble.

    Got mine Dec 27th. This bar works really at volume 10+. Anything lower is just cleaner sound for tv. But it has awesome base and smooth synced sound. At higher volumes its fantastic. But you do get Atmos with 2019 models connected to eArc. It says what you get and dependind on device you have to make adjustments to get better outputs says from older blu rays. Also depending where your source is from it affects thr sound. A 4k player gives best sound to centre speaker for speech and watching same movie on digital apps it does not. Over all it great just wish it had an equilizer and a bloody app. The remote sucks by far.

    • @GnomezGrave
      @GnomezGrave  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      True. It must be around 10 to properly hear it. The biggest problem now I have is the issue with eARC. It constantly mutes itself and I have to either turn eARC mode off and on, or unplug and plug the soundbar. :(

      @@GnomezGrave what tv do you have. For Sony Bravias you put eArc to eArc port then in setting you must put the port to enhanced and also go to another setting and turn on eArc to Auto. Plus try diff HDMI cables cause it must be 2.0 18gauge. I bought 8K HDMI cable 2.1 that works for 2.0 also.

    Not working god damn. My Xbox one X is connected with my UHD TV. The XBox One X goes to TV HDMI1. Then i connect my JBL 9.1 Soundbar with my TV with ARC to ARC. So i cant select 5.1 or 7.1 or Dolby Atmos for home theaters.. Why? Its a 5.1.4 Atmos Soundbar. Ive never seen the Atmos font on my Soundbar :'(( Can anyone help me? I tryed all, nothing helped. Another guy say i have to connect My Xbox to my Soundbar, and the Soundbar to the TV with ARC. But then i cant find the input source on my Tv. I think the HDMI Cable from Xbox and JBL must be good enought for this. I've been desperate for 6 months now. Someone get a cold Beer from Switzerland for helping me... pls?

    • @GnomezGrave
      @GnomezGrave  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need eARC to get Dolby Atmos. If you don't habe eARC on your TV, you won't have Atmos. You can try to plug a compatible device to the HDMI in of the soundbar and you might get Atmos, but not 4K@120.

      Well, it does that less frequently for sure. Maybe even once or twice a day. I can't even remember because it doesn't bother me.
      And also, take other people's reviews with a grain of salt. Not everyone has the same expectation from a device. And also, they might have a faulty unit as well. If that's the case, you can definitely replace/return it.
      With the current state, I'm super satisfied with my experience, but of course it depends on what you really need out of this.
