- Workers' Party (WP) MP Leon Perera and senior member Nicole Seah have resigned from the opposition party after having an extramarital affair, secretary-general Pritam Singh announced on Wednesday (Jul 19).
The party held a news conference two days after a video clip apparently showing the pair surfaced on Facebook, prompting the party to say that it was looking into an "inappropriate exchange" apparently between two senior members of the party. Details: cna.asia/44z2sTe

At least the resignation is effective with immediate effect, not like some other party giving almost half year of notice.....
Pritam's attitude and wisdom to whistleblowers means more... a lot more worms may likely be wiggling in WP, and you cannot be a leader like that waiting for other parties to find out and trash you... ... because this sort of HRM in leadership if one day to govern will become NEW PAP II of today.
Pritam should already be very high alert, open up the matter to entire WP and community so that they can watch out for Nicole's nonsense with Leon BECAUSE Nicole is a party political issue when it comes to election. But he totally EASILY dismissed with those unacceptable reasons.
You know... there was a case at SIA or related industry when a very low level worker reported a hole to high level, the leaders dismissed him because he was low level and not credible for anything BUT refused to check... ... so the hole was exploited by the very worker who reported the hole... ... and got rich and then got arrested.

This is how PAP got into massive troubles now, and this will be how... ... this is how WP is having troubles. Pritam's leadership is so much like Tharman's... ... You ever heard Tharman blasting Shanmugam and Vivian on Ridout for those nonsense when he is to become President guarding the reserves?
That's because Tharman has been like that in his GRC and grassroots for ages... ... his grassroots even threw issues back at residents and many funny funny elements rose... ... and if you visit the infamous garden... ... tons and tons and tons of cigarette buds, not to mention the estates in his constituency DESPITE multiple red alerts raised... ...

3 days is due to lack of integrity. 3 years is given chance to turn a new leaf. Action is immoral but resonsibilities as MP serving residents are not compromised.

*As always Pritam handled this Q&A session so damn well and as ever he is so articulate and charming*
Unfortunately no one ask him if he did not disregard the whistle blower complain, he cud safe the situation. This is a lesson for WP not to take things lightly even if the evidence is not prima facie as many offences or wrongdoings does not come nicely packed with evidence. So a whistle blower‘s complain is always helpful in the absence of evidence, even if the person is not in good terms with the accused. So it should have been taken heed of and followup. Unfortunately, the misjudgement of the whistle blower could have saved this situation before the video was posted online. Anyway the episode have been addressed and hopefully the two of them can continue their lives happily with their families and put an end to this episode.

Bad apples are everywhere. Once identified, get rid of them. Too many MPs to serve a small constituency, many can afford to do it part time but take full pay. Cutting down fats save tax payers money. It is sad to hear of these human frailties. Both inappropriate relationships involving PAP & WP members appear to occur after the 2020 elections . In Tan Chuan -Jin’s case, being a Speaker of Parliament , he was supposed to maintain a non- partisan relationship which includes with the other MPs . By having such a relationship, he had breached his duty as a Speaker of Parliament. Through his admission of the inappropriate relationship to PAP some time ago & despite being counselled & holding out that there would be a stop in the relationship, he did not keep his word unfortunately Had he broken off the inappropriate relationship, things may have turned out differently . While what had happened is grievous , let us not cast stones at the parties involved but instead let them & their families heal . Human beings are fallible in one area or another. Nor shall we be quick to cast blame on the political parties which they are affiliated with . As Singaporeans , let us be gracious & respectful & let their respective political parties take the appropriate measures in the circumstances.

I was always impressed with Leon Perera's capabilities and his calibre as an outstanding opposition member representing the needs and concerns of the people of Singapore. A pitiful loss indeed. Praying for healing over all the affected members of both their families who have been hurt and reconciliation to set in with grace and peace.

The driver blew the whistle. WP was indifference , the very least, put up a yellow flag on the two and whether WP has any standard [SOP]procedure? No storm without winds. Was the driver given further time to give more details? Was their respective spouse alerted? The two still continued even when they realised someone blew the whistle. They blatantly proceeded.

So with that, The Straits Times’ questions while were already addressed in Pritam’s opening statements, can be looked at as simply seeking confirmation. But then came Channel 8’s. Didn’t he already answered? Made known what relationship? Only when the video came out, did they know it was real. Before that, they checked.

Well...I'd say that journalists know more than you think. Some might ask out of curiosity so as to make things clear to themselves and the public, but some have a story already in mind and know what question to ask so that they can write the story they were looking for. Some questions all sound the same but they're subtly phased. Some journalists ask questions to get a feel of what other kind of story angle is possible (see the question about Nicole's and Leon's families, that prob was a gut question from the journo to see whether she could shift her reporting towards their families a bit more instead)
The journalists can put whatever quote they successfully got from Singh in the article to reflect a certain slant e.g. they could write something like "When repeatedly asked about XYZ, Pritam Singh seemed to defend himself by saying ABC". This is how news is made, this is a story that can be written in so many ways
Nope. I do not think journalists know little. There are journalists who know a lot. We should expect them to, for the important role they play. And I do understand that some are trying to get answers for the angle they want. But even then, there are are standards and professionalism. Hopefully it’s not just to get a sensational angle. And for the question on family - yes maybe to move it to family but who was she asking?
