A good stihl backpack blower will get right down to the soil. I’ve done it a dozen times. Even use it to clear a trail to walk into the woods so I’m not stepping on the leaves.

Great video, I can't wait to see the end result of the hinge cutting between the food plots and the blind.

In your opinion, what is the best mineral lick/ deer attractant that horses will not eat?

Randy, great video. You definitely answered my question about whether I should dig deep into the soil of my newly cleared wooded area food plot. The area was completely covered with trees and brush so I cleared the area of small and medium sized trees and definitely all the pine trees. I am now ready to go to the next step you mentioned about spraying some weed killer, then drag and slightly break up the surface of the soil. The un-turned soil has about a 4-6 inch natural layer of organic matter, therefore I will only scuff it as you had done. Does it matter what type week killer I use? I have several gallons of liquid Ground Clear purchased from Lowe's. Thanks again for the informational video.

You're already ahead of the game because you didn't breakup or turn over your soil. Good job!
You can use a 41% glyphosate product like Roundup to kill all your vegetation.
Do NOT use vegetation killer such as Ground Clear.
It will basically "kill" the soil to prevent seeds from germinating. Even your food plot seeds. I only use Ground Clear on my access trails because it will keep them clear of vegetation for several months.
For a first year plot, I would recommend planting a grain blend like winter rye grain, "not rye grass", winter wheat, oats, groundhog radishes, and an annual clover like crimson or red clover. Plant in late August in the Midwest.

Thanks Randy. that's great advice. I'm down in NC (eastern side). I'm still finishing some of the clearing process because it's so very hot and humid. I walked back there tonight after tending to kennel chores and the mosquitoes were in a frenzy. It's supposed to rain for the next several days so it gives me time to plan this out. If you don't mind, I'll send you some pics of the semi-cleared area. I have a YT video channel and have been doing little videos working my way back to the food plot area. Once I finally got back there, the work really began. I have a strong crew of three (me, myself, and yes......you guessed it...I). LoL I'll start looking for the Roundup w/ 41% glyphosate and some fertilizer. I don't think you mentioned what type fertilizer but I'll check one of your videos. Thanks again.

Thanks Randy, I will. I just checked out a different video you made in 2016 (I think). I'm new to all of this but I'm soaking it up like a sponge (smile).

What kind of mineral do you put on? Does the soil and plants uptake the mineral?

Very informative! My first time making a food plot will be this year. Im planting Rye cerial grain. My plot will be your size and I dont want to spend money on a tiller or cultipacker. So if I was to use a garden rake to loosen up dirt I could just throw the seeds on top? Would I need to use ATV tires to pack the seeds down?

Yes sir. Crimson clover would be a great choice with the rye.

Why put a water hole next to food plot? Deer get most of their water from water in greens if the food plot, should put water in a buck cruising area as another stand location
