I re-watched this several times and felt that I should leave a comment again. This is the best Road To Hana video I have seen on TH-cam so far. You didn't cover everything but what you covered is great/enough. I like your style too - calm and not too many effects like other videos I see.

This is so true! I’ve watched so many videos about Maui as my trip approaches and this is by far the best one. Very informative, easy to watch, incredible aerial footage (btw, what drone do you use?) and the talk isn’t obnoxious!

Don’t try to rush this adventure. There is not a lot to see and do in Hana, itself. This is an example of the journey being the destination. Take your time and enjoy it.

Weird question, but I’m a bird photographer and I was wondering if you have seen a lot of birds along the drive? Also do you know any areas (touristy or not) where I can get closer to birds? I’m going to try to publish an article on Hawaiian birds in the near future and trying to get help. Thanks, and content creator if you know anything I’m listening. Thanks friends and hello from North Carolina

As a local who’s lived in Maui for over 20 years I have to say this is a very good video. It hits the main highlights of the road to Hana. I also agree with the final recommendation of spending the night in Hana is the best way to do it, but if you cannot these are the things you should do on a one day trip.

I am from Texas so for all Texans out there REMEMBER REMEMBER that this road is will take HOURS to drive. There are a lot of sharp turns and it seemed like forever for me when I drove this road to reach Hana. I'd recommend at least two days to drive this beast! We started at 6AM and didn't get home until 9PM (stores were closed way before then) and I felt like I missed a lot of good opportunities. This road is really really long so I suggest you break it up if you want to get the full experience. Garden of Eden has peacocks running around so check that out it was fun if you love peacocks, my wife did.

Great to know, thank you! We are spending our 10th wedding anniversary in Kauai, Oahu then Maui. I wanted to make sure we didn’t miss other things in Maui but this road seems so incredible. Do you recommend staying in Hana or elsewhere on Maui? Trying to plan for fall. Thanks.

Man, this is the BEST video of The Road to Hana by far. We did fine and had a great time in one day, wished I know about that app. One suggestion, plan to head out early like 5am and began your trip back early because it get dark really quick (you'll drive much slower compare to driving during day time) and it won't be fun nor safe driving in the dark. I would head back out 4:00 or 4:30pm. Cheers!

Touching on one relevant thing here- keep in mind that currently Haleakala closes at 5pm local time. If you plan on doing Pipiwai, make sure you arrive at Haleakala by 3pm. DO NOT MISS PIPIWAI trail. Possibly the highlight of Hana for me. It cannot be overstated how incredible Pipiwai is. Also- currently Wai’anapanapa requires 24 hour reservations to access the park. We skipped it but wouldn’t have had time for Pipiwai otherwise so if worked out for us. Overall Hana is an incredible experience and would do it again. Also don’t skip the Gypsy app! So worth it!

I know you're getting a lot of positive comments and I'm not going to blow that, BUT, there are a few other free apps for the Hana guide vs the Gypsy - and spending an hour at the Garden of Eden where there's way more on the road, not the best. Also, 2 nights in Hana and 4 hours on the Pipiwai trail, when you're only there for a week is a bit much. There's SO much more to Maui than Hana. Anyway, just my 2 cents and thanks for putting this together.

This is a fun video! The road to Hana is beautiful.
I went last year on a tour (ie. Tour bus with a crowd of tourists). We were able to go all the way around, where there were desert places with wild goats and it was just a totally different experience from the rest of the day. I know rental cars are prohibited from accessing that road though. So, for some of the viewers, don't be sad you're part of a crowd, take a tour also, see the other side. You'll also get to experience the sunset.

I suggest the Shaka Guide app over the Gypsy Guide app. I would also suggest you bring a way to connect your phone to your JEEP (yes, I 100% agree with the Jeep suggestion. I'm not a fan of them and would never buy one, but on Maui, a topless Jeep is A MUST!) as most rentals do not have Bluetooth. I bought an auxiliary cord that connects to my phone Bluetooth.

This is a great video and tips... I've been to Maui 4 times so just a few add-on's... I agree to def stay 1-2 nights in Hana { Hana Maui Resort by Hyatt } is nice too... the cottages on the coast are in a truly "breath-taking" location... !!! // Tip - for all of Maui; get heavy duty flexible rubber soled water-shoes !!! { Maui has what locals call "evil thorns" !!! They are even on the pristine sand beaches !!! // Tip - Re: "Mama's Fish House" - great place, more formal but you need reservations MONTHS in advance !!! -- Paia Fish Market on the drive back is also a great stop and less formal, killer fish burgers w coleslaw on the bun !!! // Tip - bring "TP" in your car... lol ( not many places to pee or worse ) // Waianapanapa State Park; you need a reservation and it gives you a 2-3 hour window to be there so that can be tricky too.... // k... Mahalo ( thank you ) - 🙂

The only thing I can add is time your trip to catch that beautiful sunset on your lap around the road to Hana. I captured it by luck but chances are you won’t. It is a stunning view to remember sunset is usually 5:30-5:45 leave that national park around 4:30 you should catch it just like I did.

An awesome video with great quality and edits! How did you take it? (with a drone?) Also, did you start the trip from north to south?

I took the road to Hana once. Black lava sands and waterfalls. So many.
I was 18. And I got baaaaked in Hana thanks to their excellent local produce. And I stayed in Hana. For 4 hours.
    Safety first, eh.
Every other thing that happened stays in Hana. Kinda like Vegas.

Excellent video, but you left out 2 of my favorite spots. Hamoa is one of my favorite beaches on the planet, and Waikoa Pond (Venus Pool) shouldn't be missed.

to camp there it has always (for many years) been required to get a permit in advance
I'm curious about the new policy for stopping by though.
I didn't stop at Wainapanapa the last few day trips I made out to Hana (to visit a friend), in August and September 2020, while we were closed to visitors from overseas. Haven't gone by Wainapanapa in a few years. (Live on north shore, between Paia and Kaenae), but camped there several nights in a row on a few different occasions (other trips out, camped in Kipahulu).
Since we reopened to visitors and after covid-19 became a thing, apparently they are adjusting policies and protocils to monitor volume of people at any one time. I'm curious now, but don't plan on taking the drive anytime soon. It was HEAVEN driving out there with *no traffic* in August last year and in early September. Never thought I'd do multiple day trips out and back like that. Always went out to camp for several days. It was nice to go hit red sand beach and visit with my friend and eat and head back, and have time to stop and take quick dips (when the water wasn't running too high from recent rains), at some of the pools along the way, and get back on the road and make such amazing time and be home for dinner.

Ah, it's a policy for non-residents. Makes sense.

Really enjoyed the video. Thanks so much for sharing this great information. I noticed you had a drone with you, I’m planning on taking mine when I go in April next year. Could you let me know where you can and can’t operate a drone there? Ideally, another voice over video would be great which focus on photography would be the best. And I’m sure you’d get a ton of views.
