Mike is one of the most highly underated guitarist ever ! Just realize hes written the guitar melody for every incubus song ..his music is so new and so unorthadox that nobody can create anything close hes really a musical genius
Good call. I've been listening to Brandon interviews over the past few days while going on nature walks, and was thinking the exact same thing about him being a good book narrator. I also feel he'd be perfect for guided meditations.
Mikey’s “everyone’s literate in their own way” response is the attitude towards life, people, & myself I strive to have. It speaks volumes to who he is. Their positivity as a band has really carried through their music
1999 I was getting ready to go to school (junior high school) and had MTV onn and the video for Pardon Me started, I just stopped doing anything and stood there watching and listening, that same weekend my mom tooked me to the music store and bought me the record, hearing it was so mindblowing for me specially since I was starting to play guitar and Mikey’s work in that album just opened my eyes about what can you do with a guitar and the lyrics for The Warmth just got right in my head. It was right before the divorce of my parents so there was alot of stress in the house, that record helped me deal with it.
Dante Luna Thanks for sharing the story!! Reminds me of that time of my life and i went back to the firs time I saw incubus live as a teenager. First tour that hoobastank was on nation wide and they opened for Incubus... just reminds me of those times and reading your short story on those times just took me back.
Speaking of wine, All of them as a whole are aging like some very fine wine! They are such a down to earth band and I'm just honored to have grown up with them! It's just beautiful!
Incubus has a big part in shaping me musically. It thought me my first Jazz & Funk chords. Also helped me get deeper into those genres. I’ll forever cherish many 12 hour learning sessions locked in my room and endless nights with friends jamming all their songs from beginning to end. I learned all of the Unplugged Session, Make Yourself, Morning View, S.C.I.E.N.C.E & most of a crow left of the murder (in that order)...fast forward 20 years later. I am 32 at the end of this month. I haven’t seen or talked to my friends in over 7 years. I still grab my acoustic after work and play incubus songs in my living room while my 8 year old daughter listens. :)
I was 14 when i fell in love with them. 8th grade.. Now i am 28... And incubus is the reason why i love these kind of genre.. Then explored everything from alternative to metal... Thanks incubus.. U will always be my number one fave band.. And crush on brandon boyd... 😁😍😍 Sending love from the philippines...
Okay. This is pretty amazing! Matt Forte, the host interviewing, performed in a band called Phylum in the early 2000's. I played a large number of shows with him with my former band. One of Phylum's influences was Incubus, so to see him interview Incubus must have been a full circle moment. Matt, if you read this... Hello Friend! I hope you are well. Super awesome that you got to interview one of your biggest influences!
These guys are all meant to be in a great band..their chemistry on each other like freaking amazing to all of us, fans of Incubus..they have some sort of magic spark when they together to play their music..INCUBUS FOREVER..
They seem like really great band brothers, great friends and they seem to get along really well together..I hope they stay like this forever, great friends!
Thanks Incubus for existing. I am from Cali (Colombia), I am 33 years old and I have been listening to you since 2006. It is a blessing that there are people in the world like all you. I congratulate you, keep on enjoying the possibility of creating, expressing and experimenting with music and Life. Like other people on this planet, I feel a very strong, mystical, philosophical, political, cultural and artistic connection with their musical project, I feel happy that we have experienced the drastic change of society in terms of technology among other things . You are all an inspiration to many people; transformation, evolution, mature, open mind, wisdom. I share this phrase: < don't be afraid to show how weird you are, because there are other people just as weird as you are and this is beautiful >
Just saw them in fargo and had the best time, they played all the hits for almost 2 hours! Bucket list band for me and would do it a million times over if I could.
I was 16 years old when MY dropped and I remember listening to Stellar for the first time and I fell in love with Incubus. They became my favorite band overnight and still are 20 years later. It’s corny, but This album changed my life.
I want to thank BUILD Series NYC & Incubus for allowing me the opportunity to speak to my favorite band & best of all share an amazing laugh with everyone in the room & those streaming the interview! Definite dream come true moment as the band took the time to shake everyone's hand and thank us for our support afterwards. They are as humble & genuine as it gets, love them. Here's to 20 + more years of Incubus!!
I love you guys. Being a southern California native. I remember one of my girlfriends had fungus among us and I was like who are these guys??? Science came out. A force to be reckoned with. But, this record was magic. I turned 21 when morning view came out and feel like,I grew up with them and were with me every step of the way. Or more like, I've been with them every step of the way. Their songs mark pinnacles through out my adult life. If not now when dear to my heart. Thank you for a lifetime of beautiful music. Im a better adult growing up with Incubus ❤👽
I'm so excited to hear "Make Yourself" live!!!! We've been asking if they would play it, at every meet and greet that we've been to, so I'm happy to hear many others have too! And yes, Incubus, start making kids' clothing!!! We need little nuggets to start off proper!! Can't wait for October, in Detroit!!! Thank you for this interview🙏🏼😁✌🏻🤙🏼🖖🏼🤘🏻
Kilmore didn't even speak. He didn't say a single word. Whats up with that? The interviewer didn't even ask him what it was like joining the band just prior to Make Yourself and recording it.
@david S - Indeed, lame of the interviewer not to segue questions to both Ben & Kilmore. It’s jarring, and his fellow band mates don’t really throw him the ball either.
The interviewer couldnt figure out who they were or how to pretend to be interested during the entire show. Incubus is not Matt's Forte.... u know what I mean?....
Great interview! They seem very nice and humble guys. I listen to them since SCIENCE, and it's true, the influences were a little too much there...i started to listen to them cause i was a Faith No More fan and Brandon's voice and the music remind me that band off course the amazing Mike Patton. But then Make Yourself came out and was a huge departure, but that's when i really start to LOVE this band. To this day my favorite records of Incubus are Make Yourself and Morning View, specially this last one.

It's fluent in my head. I write it in my own language...time signatures Ughhh 😊 Love the telepathy between these connected beings of energy ❤️🎶🎶🎶❤️
I have "make yourself" tattooed on my forearm. I will always, always love that record. That, and Ok Computer were huge because they were representative of a sound I'd always heard in my head. Hearing them was like when you meet someone and you feel like you've always known them. I remember being 15 and going to the record store with my friend to get that album. Then we drove around Memphis for hours listening to it. This became a favorite pastime that summer. I'll never forget the first time I heard Consequence. As soon as we got home, I sat down and figured it out on guitar. I still play that riff almost every time I'm soundchecking before band rehearsal. I even have a little "Chuck" sticker on my MXR Phase 90 pedal. Lol In 2015, I got to hang out with them backstage and shoot dice after their show at the Republik in Honolulu. They won a couple hundred bucks from my buddy. Cleaned him out! Lol They were SUCH nice, down to earth guys. It wasn't even like meeting my "heroes". It was just like hanging out with friends. I wasn't nervous in the least bit. They're the type of dudes who just put you at ease. ..and standing 5 ft from Mikey for the whole show was so inspiring. the phase of my life from 1999- 2005 is cemented in my memory along with this album and morning view as the soundtrack to remember that phase of my life. Crow left of the murder was the last good album. I feel like all successful bands get to a point where they figure they made it, they know how to pop out songs and play shows, make tons of money, so they just keep it going. But the soul and passion of this band slowly fell apart after the old bass player left. Check out footage of these guys playing live shows in the 90s and 2000- 2001 era, was some of the best live music ive ever heard.
Jose Pasillas Beast ass drummer. Maestro of splash effects. I played similarly so when I heard them in the 90’s I paid close attention. Haven’t really paid attention to anything they’ve done since “Crow” though.
I know literally nothing about these guys, but I suspect they stayed away from smashing as many drugs and booze as possible, at any given opportunity, as they still look amazing after all those years.
They should get Dirk Lance to play bass with them for this make yourself songs. He is one of my all time favourite bass players. Also, I hope they do this 20 year anniversary for Morning View too
