    The salary cap makes the US sports so interesting. Every team has the same chances and this increases the level of attraction.

      thebeast12333 hes saying it fair because everyone has the same amount of money to make a good team. If NFL got rid of the salary cap then the teams who make the most money would always win because they would have the money to pay all the top players. All the poorer stadiums wouldnt have a chance

      Cooterbrown Exactly. If you look at La Liga in Spain for instance, the two top teams have won all but one of the last 10 years because their payroll doesn't even compare to recently promoted teams.

    Colin literally made an argument for WHY there needs to be salary cap...
    He pointed out that the biggest markets aren't the best teams, LA, DC, New York etc. That's the reason for a salary cap is to level the playing field so the richest teams can't go signing the 10 best players in the world to the same team and dominate every year. Particularly in Football.
    The salary cap causes a revolving door of success in the NFL (except if you're Cleveland). Because the best teams can't just grab the best players and dominate.

      Nonsense - it doesn't level the playing field, it just allows teams to underpaying their players.

      Dumb Dumber underpay? underpay? Give me one way any of the players are being underpaid. You do know with a salary cap comes a salary floor. meaning you have to field a team that cost atleast X amount of money.

      JuicyPlayer I'm a Chicago sports fan. My Cubbies don't win every year. The Sox don't win either. The Hawks are dynastic...but shouldn't the salary cap take away our advantage?? Salary cap IS pointless, but not from the reasons Colin says

    • @JuicyPlayer
      @JuicyPlayer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Even before the curse was broken the Cubs are a team with deep pockets. The Curse was just the result of really bad luck and mismanagement even with tons of cash. The Cubs will always have an advantage over a team like the Rays just with their TV money alone.

    • @famguy218
      @famguy218 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      JuicyPlayer yeah I know about the bad management and the team history. The Rays would do a lot better if their fans cared and watched the games on tv or went to them. Look at Boston: not America's largest market at all, and they have a lot of money because of their TV ratings. That's one of the few smart things the Wrigleys did before selling the franchise to the Tribune company, they aired the games across the country giving the Cubs a nationwide fanbase. Same with the Red Sox and also the Cardinals I believe

    • @famguy218
      @famguy218 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      JuicyPlayer A lot of the revenue and payrolls comes from TV deals. That's the most important thing. Now that the Indians are good again their fans in Ohio will watch them again and they should get more revenue

    • @JuicyPlayer

    I usually agree with Colin Cowherd but not on this topic. The reason why the small market teams can win IS the salary cap. Without it, Melo + James + Durant + Davis + Curry would be playing for NY (or LA) together. SA for example would get swept in the finals...

    The reason all those small teams are competitive and can actually win a title is because there is a salary cap. If you remove the salary cap, the bigger franchises will take the majority of superstars as they can offer a lot more cash. This will quickly reduce the competitiveness of the league and limit the amount potential winners every year. Take the obvious example of soccer. Excusing Leicester City, when was the last time even a "medium" franchise won the league?

    • @TheRedSphinx

  • @eddaggett56
    @eddaggett56 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    This is the dumbest thing I've seen, the salary cap should be implemented in every league so championships aren't bought, they're earned. In the MLB there was a period of just having the Yankees win the World Series because the owner was loaded and bought the best players, that's why it hasn't been able to compete with the NFL and NBA because usually every team is equally competitive and has an equal chance to win, that's why there's way more great games played in the NFL's 17 week season where every team only plays 16 games than the MLB where they play almost 200 games

    • @seans4961

  • @Pigaroulettes
    @Pigaroulettes 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow, what a bad idea...I'm french and I love football (soccer...) and it's getting worse and worse. There is no draft, no salary cap, no rules... Imagine : you can have the "number one pick of the draft" every year, you just have to buy this player to his school. Paris (owned by Qatar) just paid 180M€ for Mbappé. A 18 year-old guy. Last summer, the most expensive player of all time was Pogba for 115M€ and this week they pay 180M€ for a 18 year-old guy... And you know what ? Less than one month ago, they paid 222M€ for Neymar Jr. They did not have to make a trade and send a player in return, or anything. They just paid 222M€ to buy the player. 180M€ and 222M€ in just a few weeks. And they are now one of the best team in Europe.
    And guess what ? Last year Nike paid Paris 30M€ a year to wear Nike jerseys. Now, with all these stars, they will pay 80 to 100M€ a year. So the rich get richer. So Paris will be able to buy even more players next year. (There are teams competing against Paris in France national league, that have a total budget of 20M€ for the entire year...)
    That's what you get when you have no rules. Rich teams buying all the best players. Imagine Prokhorov (owner of the Brooklyn nets, one of the richest guy in the world) just buying Lebron, Durant, Kawhi, Davis, Curry, Kyrie... Well he would have done it if he could. Abramovitch (one of the richest guy in the world, owner of Chelsea FC in Europe) did it.
    I wake up in the middle of the night to watch NBA games instead of football (soccer...), don't ruin it by getting rid of the salary cap. Please don't make it pay to win, it's sport, not clash of clan.

    At the end of the day the salary cap exists solely so the owners can pocket more money rather than giving players what they really deserve. The argument of it helping small market teams is absolute nonsense. There are 2 or 3 realistic contenders every season pretty much like most other sports the only difference being is that the owners pocket the extra money.

    • @vuk911
      @vuk911 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Every season yes, but those 2 or 3 change from time to time. Wanna now how many teams won the soccer championship (no.1 sport in my country) in last 27 years? 3. And one of those 3 won it just once. Other 26 times, those other two teams won. And want to take a guess where are those teams from? You guessed it, they're from the capital city, which is also the biggest in the country.

    just look at European soccer, the same teams win every year and those are the ones with tons of money and can buy all the talent in the world. In Spain it's Real Madrid or Barcelona, in UK it's Manchester City or Chelsea, in Germany it's undisputed Bayern Munich etc etc. You wanna know who's going to win the league in the next season? just take a look at their bank account and you'll know the champion before the season starts.
    If you want competitiveness, then the spending MUST be on equal grounds

    • @agetee4289
      @agetee4289 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If they what to compete they got to make shure people come to the games, attention media wise got to be higher first take, undisputed and those sport shows doesn't cover it at all and a really big part is the talent part you got to produce your owen talents and let them become stars. If you don't get those thinks going it would be a market like Russia or China its already the case that western europe isn't the place in world soccer with the highest wages but China and Russia don't have a chances competing with Europe anywise. So at the end you got to pay the stars to stay but first you got to build them than give them the audience and Media that pays them worthy attention and than pay them the big bugs.

    Sry you're wrong about that one. I'm from europe where there is no salary cap in professional sport and the same teams in europe dominate for decades, I'd have to say the salary cap and the draft system are the things that I like the most about the system of american sports. You literally cannot stay superdominant for more than 5 years I'd say because at some point your stars are free agents and other teams can offer them way more money than you can. This provides constant change and unpredictability which things that make sport so addictive. If not for salary cap and draft the richest teams in the biggest markets would just share the championships among themselves. I find it funny that america of all countries has a kinda socialist sport system.

    I feel like he didn't provide reasons for getting rid of the salary cap. He just said small market teams can win. That doesn't mean much. Parity is important in sports, salary caps, like the NFL's promote parity. The NBA's cap goes up so much from year to year, the salaries have not caught up yet, so parity has not been achieved yet.

  • @Cmaster52

    In European soccer, there is no salary cap. The same teams win the championships and make the playoffs, every year. When Leicester won the premier league, it was potentially the biggest miracle in sports history. The great thing about the salary cap is that every team has a legitimate chance of winning. Even with the salary cap, the Yankees, the Celtics, lakers, etc. have won the most championships, but the royals and the packers are small market teams but can compete which makes their respective sport so much better. If you want to see the NY Giants, yankees, and lakers win every year, then maybe the salary cap isnt for you

    One thing I like more about the NFL than La Liga and most of the other Football, or 'Soccer' leagues, is that the rich teams don't always win. Without salary cap, how would a place like Buffalo ever even come close to the other teams in the league (Yes I know they haven't made the playoffs in like a thousand years but you get the point)? I hate seeing the same two or three teams per league win each and every year at least 9 times out of 10. In the La Liga only 5 teams have ever won the title more than twice. Real Madrid and Barcelona have won it a combined 56 times.

    Well he's right in that salary cap is pointless, but money is from television deals. He's wrong in everything else, the St. Louis Cardinals signed a billion dollar tv deal. I hate the Cardinals, but they prove that having loyal fans and high tv ratings can take out the advantages of a big market.

    People talk about the NFL having all this parity (because of the salary cap), but look at the last 3 years. Let's start with the 2013 season: The Seahawks (13-3, #1 seed) defeated the 49ers (#5 seed, but a 12-4 record & the reigning NFC champions) in the NFC Championship Game, & the Broncos (13-3, #1 seed) defeated the Patriots (12-4, #2 seed) in the AFC Championship Game. 2014 season: The Seahawks (12-4, #1 seed) defeated the Packers (12-4, #2 seed) in the NFC Championship Game. While the 4th seeded Colts (11-5) did upset the 2nd seeded Broncos (12-4) to make it to the AFC Championship Game, they then proceeded to get their asses kicked by the #1 seeded Patriots (12-4), a team that has been at or near the top of the NFL for the last (roughly) 15 years. This year, both Conference Championship Games featured the top 2 seeds (#1 seed 15-1 Panthers over #2 seed 13-3 Cardinals in the NFC, & #1 seed 12-4 Broncos over #2 seed 12-4 Patriots in the AFC). If this were baseball, people would be up in arms about a lack of parity

    If NFL had a salary cap it would be less interesting and the rich teams will always be around the top. A team with less money may have a good season every once in a while but then their players will be taken by a richer team if they aren't a team player.

  • @wititorac

    In order to eliminate the Salary Cap every team should just pool the profits and split them equally, that way everyone has the same "budget" with no salary cap.

    If the NBA didn't have a salary cap, I would never see my Kings win a championship in my lifetime (granted, still probably won't) but places like Sacramento aren't a destination for stars. You can throw all the money in the world at a guy like durant or Lebron, they would still go to somewhere like Miami or LA for a little less money than Sacramento or Phoenix is offering

  • @dantepenny6730

    Yall are definitely not getting what he is saying the leagues that don't have a salary cap not all big city teams will be successful just because they don't have a salary cap they will most likely get too careless with the money because of the steady lumps of money instead of a team that has to budget and make sure they hit on the players they have

  • @anthonyspeta2181

    if every league had a salary cap system like the NHL, no one would complain. but players are too selfish to take paycuts or play for small market teams to actually have a competitive league.

  • @ThorMaximus
    @ThorMaximus 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Colin is so wrong here and he contradicts himself when he did a "draft" of where he would put NFL teams, starting with New York twice and Los Angeles twice (no Pittsburgh or Green Bay) all based on market size -- which one is it? Money is part of the equation and there is an advantage to teams with larger revenue streams, but the equation has a multitude of other factors and it's ignorant to presume otherwise.

    what adds to footballs parity isn't salary cap, it's the fact you are one and done in the playoffs. any other sport has multiple game series to determine the outcome. literally anyone can win any day in football.

    • @pimpnamedslickback7780
      @pimpnamedslickback7780 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. MLB has no salary cap and it's parity is better than the NBA. At the end of the day alot of it has to do with how the sport is designed. One-and -done will always have tons of parity and sports like basketball where one guy can be the difference between making the finals or missing the playoffs is the real factor.

    they arent good but if u let the big market teams just spend whatever theu want they will buy all the good talent..I think there neess to be stricter rules on the salary caps most sport have them and it still dont stoo teams like the yankees and the cavs from soending more than the cap. the cap is the top no more than that if u cant sign players and stay under thats ur prob better find diffrent players or restructure deals or whatever. and if u go over cap ur not allowed to play in the olayoffs. I also think there should be a base salary for everyone in lets us the nfl for example. everyone get a base salary of lets say 8 mil a year and everything else is preformance based u get extra for x amout of yards x amount of tackles and so on
