There actually IS (or was) someone named Elmer. Rod Newkirk used the name Elmer in his March 1971 "How's DX" column in QST. He said that Elmer "Bud" Frohardt Jr. was the Elmer he had in mind when he used the name although he didn't expect Elmer to be coined as the term used for an experienced ham that helps others learn the hobby.

There are some real freaks at the local club in my town. Only one club for almost 130km.Think I'll do my own thing with some of my friends.

You can also join a far away club. I'm a member of 3 radio clubs, one is 190km away and the other in South Australia!

Elmer lol, I have 1 near my home who asks about the antenna all the time, he's late 79yrs old.
I said he lives with 140ft fir tree's growing 20ft from his grd floor apartment, my antenna would be atop that if I wasn't 200ft away.
Its the mast he doesn't like, but it'll stay in place until I decide which will be my roof mounted #1.

I joined the local club and there were Elmers. I guess there were. You also have to remember that people have lives outside of Ham Radio. Some have an agenda that they need supporters to achieve their goals. BUT there is a wealth of knowledge you just have to pick and choose.

Good stuff. I wish there were younger demographics represented in clubs.
