Dang buddy, sorry about the windshield, but glad your dome is ok after that... not gonna lie though, I did laugh when you first said what happened... looked like a great campsite right by the water and I too enjoy a morning hike in the woods... nothing beats our Oregon rain forests... love it here.... and I gotta say that your stir fry looked amazing... I do love some camp cooking myself... camp cooking doesn't always mean dogs and burgers... who says ya cant fancy it up in the forest!! Have a great week, looking forward to the next one.
We have all done things like the "windshield incident". I like your breakdown of what went wrong. At work we always do a debrief on critical incidents listing the pros and cons of what we did. Your breakdown reminded me of that.
Each video surpasses the last in quality. Your use of music in is the best I’ve encountered on TH-cam. And lol to camping with teenagers sleeping til noon.
Was going to comment just the opposite on the music ie; @ 3:20 and again @ 12:40. To me it had about the same effect and enjoyment as listening to fingernails on a blackboard. Just me, cannot stand that type of music, would have been better with just natural sounds. $.25
From a guy who loves to explore the outdoors. Thank you for driving the roads at a good pace and holding your lane as much as possible. Also i have now watched hours of your videos you are a good steward of the land. It is impossible to leave no sign behind but we should strive for as little as possible.
Excellent video Donald. Despite getting myself high centered, Katie, Bernie and I had an awesome weekend with you and Colin. Looking forward to the next one as usual 👍👊
Thanks! All my gear only shoots at 1080 but I guess the 4K render still helps it look better on TH-cam. It slows everything down though - longer render, longer upload - so I skip it most of the time. I was ahead of schedule on this one though, LOL.
Tractor jack is a necessity for the truck. I even carry a long handled shovel in the Outback and have used it to clear snow and help others get unstuck. Never been stuck in the Outback, though.
Amazing what you can do with recovery gear. It was a learning experience this time so you can do better next time. Glad all were safe. Seen you on the trails, George.
Fantastic video. Bummer about your windshield but the important thing is no one was hurt and you learned a valuable lesson for next time. I get stuck in the snow every year. It’s usually avoidable but I try to always push a little further down the road. So many hours of digging high centered vehicles out, glad I’m not the only one :). Love seeing your views of the southern Cascades. I’m up in Washington so I spend a lot of time in mountains near Rainier. Happy trails!!
I love it. The head cracking, recovery, everything. We all have had those days. Lol. I used Snatch Straps for years. Recently I picked up a Yankum kinetic rope. World of difference.
I finally got around to watching this video. For some reason I was expecting to see snow in the Alvord desert! Haha! I’m still really sad I missed the trip. Hope you all had fun!
Jason and I liked your list of things that you did wrong, we've done those same things. We especially don't think about wearing a seat belt when you're not really driving anywhere. Glad your head is OK!
Love the shirt! Overall awesome video! The scenery out there is just 😍. Was feeling the music, food and those sweeping shots! Twas a pleasure and joy to watch after a 12 hr shift 👍 glad your head's okay and thanks for sharing about the recovery process. I think someone already mentioned Ronny Dahl having some great videos on recovery gear. Appreciate you sharing your mistakes and totally agree things like this happens and sharing it is one way we all learn. 👍Kudos 😊 either way I need to go watch some Ronny Dahl, double check if I have a kinetic strap and watch @edwardshins video 🙌
Ronny Dahl has some great content about recoveries and the dangers. I've watched many of them and knew better than to make the mistakes I made here. It's amazing what disappears from your head in the heat of the moment. :-)
Really appreciate the extraction debrief. Among the helpful hints, I wouldn't have thought about sizing the snatch strap to the vehicle. I see the logic. Before, I figured it was like many things, bigger = better.
I'll have to look at my map to find where you were. I've been adventuring through that area for the last couple years and haven't found the rougher trails that you found before you got to the snow. Also, it looked like you may have filmed a thimbleberry and not a native rose...but it is hard to tell. Gotta love all the flowers out right now! Great video! I love watching where you go and trying to find them though I wish folks weren't so against sharing these wonderful places. It's taken forever to just find a couple good spots. I guess it is part of the adventure and I will never stop searching for the next best spot. Though I do wonder if everyone posted the good spots that there would be plenty to go around!
Love the drone footage ! This brings back memories of a trip to Quinn River campground in early spring .My all wheel drive astro van drove fine in the morning on top of the snow . After kayaking for hours when I went to leave on snow had turned into mashed potatoes and I got stuck lucky my friend lived lived about 15 miles away .
Doh! Such a good video at multiple levels. Getting stuck in the snow reminded me of my wife and I doing something similar in the mountains of Colorado a few years ago. Thought we could plow our way through the 50 yard long "patch" of snow with our Land Rover LR4. Got high centered, stuck hard, no recovery equipment. Just an old folding Army shovel. Fortunately for us a couple of 30-something adventure motorcyclists came by and spent 3 hours digging us out. (Yes, I gave them enough money to pay for a very nice dinner that night!) LOTS of lessons learned in this video! But hitting your head on the windshield? And breaking it? You will never live that down! Glad you are OK and can laugh about it. And, hey, if you ever get locked out of your car now you know how to break in. ;-)
Another great video. If someone says that you’re hard headed, you can answer truthfully, “You have no idea” Glad that there were no ill affects. Have a great time on your multi day adventure. 👍🚙🏕🍻
Hey Donald. I have my light bar wiring running down the window like you. If you use some black silicone it will almost glue it down beside the window and the metal pillar. Just run a small bead and use a screw driver and tuck the wiring down and leave it for a night to dry. Love the video as always
I actually have done just that on the other side of my windshield with the wire running up to my air compressor mounted in my roof box. Squeezed it into that channel along with some black silicone and it has stayed put perfectly and is almost entirely unnoticeable. I just hadn't gotten around to doing it for the roof light wiring...ultimately no loss at this point since the windshield has to be replaced. :-)
The slush is no joke. The days in Michigan with slightly warmer weather will melt a little bit of the surface snow while underneath is still hard packed or ice. It makes for a no-go!
Thank you! I get SO many comments on videos which include some spring slush telling me I don't know how to drive in snow or whatever, but this crap isn't snow. It's like driving in greasy marbles, LOL.
Clean. Man I would be a lot more fearless on roads if I had access to some of this gear. I turned around on a goldmine adventure last week cause crazy mud.
Fear is not a bad thing. Fearlessness is what gets us into trouble like this. :-) A pair of traction boards isn't terribly expensive - most of us don't need $300 Maxtrax. And a shovel is cheap and extremely useful. We certainly could have got Ed's truck out just with shovels and traction boards, but we just ran out of patience. Just got back from the eastern Oregon desert and it was insanely wet over there...green everywhere, mud everywhere. Can't even imagine what western Oregon must've been like.
That's long been on the to-do list actually. It's a nifty item that has its good points and bad points. We'll try to get it covered one of these days. Thanks for watching!
Oh my! That was crazy! I looked at Cory with my jaw dropped! It’s crazy you had NO injury. Anyway.....glad you are okay! Enjoyed your video and wow what a great looking campsite!
I have SO many Subaru owners tell me how easily their windshields have cracked, apparently it's a thing. :-) It was a nice score on the campsite for sure. I had scouted it from satellite pics but the waterfall view was a very pleasant surprise. :-)
That must have sucked with the recovery but at least you learn from your mistakes and do it better the second time round. I’ve seen a snatch strap snap in person and it sure did some damage! That taught me to do recovers properly haha
Stupid thing is that I've watched enough videos to know better than to make the errors I did here. Everything somehow went out the window in the heat of the moment. Seek Adventure had a video where he talked about just stopping and having a cup of tea before beginning any recovery, to force yourself to slow down and think about it all more thoroughly. I even had tea, water, and a stove in the back of my car...I could have done just that, LOL
I’m glad you’re ok. As a retired Medic/Firefighter, I’ve seen too many seatbelt related injuries. It seems like a simple quick pull, but physics can change everything quickly. A lesson for us all.
You were in my area! Nearly drove past my house. Have filled up at that same gas station in Mehama and it looked like you took the same road I take to my favorite shooting area.
Seatbelts are so important. Especially in this case because you went for the yank approach. I saw your running start and was OMG, here we go 🤣. Always start with just pull taught and assist. The flying leap is only for ditches when you are too light or underpowered to do it smoothly.
Glad your head is ok. Did the guys who were standing around drinking beer ever offer to help with the recovery, or were they just enjoying the first row seats at the show? Beautiful campsite and surroundings.
Doesn’t look like either one of those straps are “snatch” straps. They both look like tow straps. Which obviously worked in this situation. But maybe you should invest in some kinetic recovery gear. Much easier on both vehicles! With a proper kinetic strap or rope, you could have hit it at twice the speed you did with no ill effects.
Ed's was a tow strap, yes. Mine was in fact a kinetic snatch strap, but I've had it for years and I think it's probably overrated for the lightweight Forester. It's getting replaced.
@@softroadingthewest Super common problem among Subaru drivers. I had commented on this video on FB and the other drivers youtube channel video. Some will say 2-3x GVWR and others 3-4x but it was pretty apparent in the video that your strap is rated far too high. Finding a kinetic strap in the correct range is difficult but thats fine since a kinetic rope is better anyway since it stretches more. The Bubba Rope Sidewinder Xtreme has served me well for a couple years now.
Haven't mentioned it, but have watched most of his recovery stuff on winching and snatching. I knew better than to make all the mistakes I made. Somehow it all went out the window in the heat of the moment.
@@softroadingthewest I honestly think you helped out way more people by showing it go wrong. I for one, will now never forget to buckle up when snatching haha! Keep up the great content- it is appreciated!
Hey glad your heads ok! 1st thanks for posting and talking about the mistakes made. I will definitely fall back on watching this videos when I buy my equipment and if I ever have to do something like this. It’s a great learning tool for others. 2nd Rotopax. I’ve been thinking about mounting my pair on my roof rack like you do. But I’ve noticed when they are in the garage mounted to the way. The heat causes them to swell and I have to vent them to get the mount to rotate. Have you had any issues? My concern is mounting them on their side you can’t vent them without gas getting all over the roof. I know that if you fill them as much as you can it minimizes expansion. I just don’t know if maybe I have my mounts set a little to tight.
It is an issue, yes. I was just dealing with that over the past week in the eastern Oregon desert where it was quite hot. When I know I'm headed out into conditions where it's likely to swell, I don't crank it down as tight, because, yes, it gets very difficult to unscrew otherwise. And on those days I simply have to remove it from the car, set it on the ground, and vent it. Had to do that several times over the past few days. Definitely an annoyance with the can mounted flat on the roof.
Was trying to figure out why I was thinking “oh man he hit his head on the windshield again?!” Though, i totally forgot I had watched your friend’s video of the same day, a couple weeks ago hahaha
Way back when the army was teaching me vehicle recovery one of the key things we learned was always try a slow and steady recovery first. If you've got the kinetic straps you can always try a jerk start later if slow and steady doesn't work, but it's easier on the people and vehicles if you can recover slow.
Seeing your modded bumper, you really don’t notice it was modded which is awesome! Subaru really should have made the bumper that way, it looks good and makes for a better departure angle. Nice work pulling out the Tundra, Subaru makes crazy awesome vehicles. Even the new ones are nice, don’t listen to the no nothing CVT haters. I love my 2015 Outback 3.6r. I know someone that owns a new Ascent and they have been towing a 20 foot boat and a decent sized camping trailer for a year now with 0 CVT issues. Sorry about the windshield though. Wearing your seatbelt might have prevented that, at least you were ok!
Yeah, bad habit for sure on the seatbelt. I just got back from a 6-day trip and I had that belt on at all times, even when I was getting out of the car every 3 minutes on a 5 mph trail. :-)
I'm impressed with your cooking! Have you tried to cook quinoa with other grains? We use about 8-15 multi grains such as black rice, wild rice, barley of several different kinds, which brings more flavor and texture. thanks for the beautiful video.
I have not tried that but it sounds fantastic, especially as I'm not suuuuper fond of quinoa, mostly eat it because I digest it much easier than rice or pasta. A bit of wild rice and barley mixed in sounds quite interesting!
@@softroadingthewest have you been tested for celiac disease? there are many who can't digest gluten and feel bloated when eating. try to look for grains that are gluten free...barley has gluten so try oat instead. Again, thank you for wonderful videos. I'm a hospital chaplain and your video is very therapeutic for me.
As long as I keep my overall grain consumption low, I can eat wheat without significant consquences, so I don't think it's full on celiac. I have pretty much the same reaction to non-gluten grain like rice as well...if I eat it too regularly I start feeling worse. Aiming for about 80% keto generally keeps me feeling pretty good. :-)
No way! I’m so glad you are ok and nothing serious came of it. The PNW is so beautiful 😍 😍😍😍. It’s crazy how we end up learning so much more from our mistakes than our successes. I’ve probably pulled out 50 vehicles in my life and never put in my seat belt or hit me head. Never again though. What drone did you end up going with?
Thanks Jared. It's just another used Spark I got off eBay to replace the one I lost in a tree. It made the most sense since I still had batteries, charger, controller, case, etc. Wasn't too painful. I actually managed to crash drone #2 into the creek seen in this video, but took it apart and got it all dried out, and it's working fine. Used it every day on my big eastern Oregon trek over the past week. :-)
No, it was all on me. It was entirely avoidable had I done a number of things differently. And yes, the seat belt, I know. That's why I specifically pointed it out at 10:23.
Hi, the broken windshield is a pitty though it looks like you all had a nice trip. Is it possible that thoose particlar straps has already loosen all their kinetic/ dynamic abilities? Hope the repair/ replacement wasn't too expensive ... ATB Franz bugikraxn
Well, there were two issues here. One is that Ed's strap was not even a kinetic strap, it was just a tow strap. Two, my strap IS a kinetic strap, but I got it years ago when I didn't really know what I was doing and I suspect it is overrated for my lightweight car. So while it's supposed to be springy and dynamic, it was still too stiff for me to make this kind of momentum snatch. It's getting replaced. :-)
You need a voodoo recovery rope. I've used it with my civic to pull out an accord buried in sand. I used it a few times with my Jeep. I even used it to pull a dead car onto a trailer by towing the car up the trailer by myself lol.
When recovering always try a tow first rather than a snatch, it’s a lot less risky. Also, investing in 2 snatch blankets to put on the snatch strap is a must, if a shackle lets go it’s either going to kill someone or go through your rear windscreen
It's a new (to me, bought used off eBay) drone. Same model as I had before, since I still had batteries, chargers, controller, case, etc. so it wasn't too catastrophic to buy just the drone itself again. I actually crashed drone #2 on the trip seen in this video, but decided not to include that in this episode. It ended up partly submerged in that creek next to our campsite, but I took it apart, managed to get it dried out and have been using it ever since. :-)
There was no strain on the transmission, the pull came entirely from the forward momentum I had built with no load on the straps - I wasn't towing him out. Though ultimately I actually should have tried that first, probably could have nudged him enough to engage with his traction boards without cracking my windshield.
It's this: amzn.to/2YauaGT Very cheap, I can't recommend it. It only works for me because the weight of the iPad is resting on a horizontal surface of my dash. This mount wouldn't hold anything up otherwise. :-)
Snow Peak. It's quite nice. They're not cheap but I have a couple of friends who have these and LOVE it when the fire gets built in them. They burn very well and in cold weather you can warm your tows without melting the soles of your shoes.
subarus have the most fragile windshields, i can't go 6 months without a pebble causing a crack, i gave up on replacing windshields and just live with the cracks
Wow. No one has yet to comment on the snatch strap situation. Ok, I’m no expert by any stretch of the imagination. But, I do no a little and I want to share what I no with you. If you don’t no about these ropes already they are called kinetic ropes. They are specifically designed for the exact situation you were in! They stretch quite a huge amount (relatively speaking) and they prevent that massive shock load to your vehicles and to your body. They are rated for just as high weight as a strap would be and it’s better for absolutely everything! For your safety and the safety of both rigs involved I would absolutely recommend you get one as soon as possible! It would have made that whole situation you were in completely safe.
Ed's was a tow strap but mine was indeed a kinetic snatch strap. I got it years ago however and I believe it is overrated for my lightweight car, thus doesn't have enough give. I did point all this out at 10:23
Thanks for that video. The footage was exquisite. Caution of using your snatching strap from.of a tie down hook as it looked. If it breaks under load, the recoil can kill. Please read up on this.point. Thanks again.

Glad your head is ok. Did the guys who were standing around drinking beer ever offer to help with the recovery, or were they just enjoying the first row seats at the show? Beautiful campsite and surroundings.
No, zero help. I did approach them and ask if they had a winch on their rig before we hooked up the straps, but they didn't. Just beer. :-)
Glad you're OK and I'll spare you the hard head jokes...I'm sure there will be others to carry that torch.😁
At least you didn’t break your head. 😅 glad that your okay in all seriousness. Any information on the type of cooker Ed used?
@kevin_norwood it is the snow peak Tabiko grill: snowpeak.com/products/takibi-fire-grill
I cant remember if you've mentioned you watch Ronny Dahl or not, but he has excellent recovery/snatch strap videos.
Me too lol!
Do I need to headbutt my subaru to make it look and run this well too?
New subscriber- what are the mods you’ve done to the Forester other than the wheel tire combo? Beautiful video - very enjoyable!
Great-looking lush country. One correction: the pink blossom you called 'rose' is actually Salmonberry. Wild rose usually blooms later in June/July.
Way back when the army was teaching me vehicle recovery one of the key things we learned was always try a slow and steady recovery first. If you've got the kinetic straps you can always try a jerk start later if slow and steady doesn't work, but it's easier on the people and vehicles if you can recover slow.
Helps to have the properly rated kinetic recovery device to start with. This one was rated far too high for a lightweight vehicle.
Check out Yankum ropes.
Mind sharing those camp coords? Pretty please 😁
Haha. Man, I get mixed up, I was thinking, "haven't I already seen this one?" Then remembered it was on Edward's Chanel lol.
Damn I was not expecting that lol
You gave your Forester a gold old fashioned Glasgow Kiss.
Woah... Your buddy owes you a windshield! Let's all never forget the importance of a seatbelt!
No, it was all on me. It was entirely avoidable had I done a number of things differently. And yes, the seat belt, I know. That's why I specifically pointed it out at 10:23.
Lol.. you're a better friend than me! But yea, be careful! I'm living vicariously through your adventures. 👍
Are you near Quartzville? Outside of Sweet Home.
I'm not sure, but it sure looked like the Opal Creek Area with them getting stuck at the Opal Lake Trailhead.
You’re probably right. He didn’t drive by Green Peter Reservoir.
Great camping site. Sorry to see you punished for the good deed. Thanks for the lessons on recovery.
I like your vids. You do the same kind of soft roading I do. I would like to get one of your stickers, Tom
Thanks! Stickers can be ordered via my website, softroadingthewest.com
That's my neck if the woods... LOL
Not sure if I missed an episode but is that a new drone or did you manage to recover the one that got stock in the tree?
It's a new (to me, bought used off eBay) drone. Same model as I had before, since I still had batteries, chargers, controller, case, etc. so it wasn't too catastrophic to buy just the drone itself again. I actually crashed drone #2 on the trip seen in this video, but decided not to include that in this episode. It ended up partly submerged in that creek next to our campsite, but I took it apart, managed to get it dried out and have been using it ever since. :-)
hey, what about the transmission, this hit pull could destroy transmission ? i have same car and i would never pull any vehicle like you.
There was no strain on the transmission, the pull came entirely from the forward momentum I had built with no load on the straps - I wasn't towing him out. Though ultimately I actually should have tried that first, probably could have nudged him enough to engage with his traction boards without cracking my windshield.
May I ask what iPad mount you are using on the dash?
It's this:
amzn.to/2YauaGT
Very cheap, I can't recommend it. It only works for me because the weight of the iPad is resting on a horizontal surface of my dash. This mount wouldn't hold anything up otherwise. :-)
What off road Nav are you using? iPad and external GPS?
Gaia GPS on the iPad + an older Garmin as backup.
What was that little filing fire pit that Ed was using?
Snow Peak. It's quite nice. They're not cheap but I have a couple of friends who have these and LOVE it when the fire gets built in them. They burn very well and in cold weather you can warm your tows without melting the soles of your shoes.
when will Hipster toast (aka Avocado toast) be on the menu in the morning sometime?
Always, always keep that seatbelt on...I’m glad you’re ok.
You need a tow bar for recovering vehicles and yes, get a correctly rated snatch strap. The rear factory tow point is not suitable.
Consider a custom tow bar that won't kill your departure angle after your recent mod.
subarus have the most fragile windshields, i can't go 6 months without a pebble causing a crack, i gave up on replacing windshields and just live with the cracks
What’s the “tent” the Collin used?
That is the Kamp-Rite tent cot:
amzn.to/32OpHcu
Colin loves it!
I did point all this out at 10:23
What kind of drone do you use for the ariely shots
DJI Spark
@@softroadingthewest thanks
One of the things I hate on the "TRD" Tundra.... NO locking Rear Diff.
Thanks for that video. The footage was exquisite. Caution of using your snatching strap from.of a tie down hook as it looked. If it breaks under load, the recoil can kill. Please read up on this.point. Thanks again.
It wasn't a tie-down, it was the dedicated recovery point.
Great. I'm so glad. I'd hate to see anyone getting hurt especially when doing a solid.
