I've been watching this over and over again while chaining and the "7% is a lot more than you think it is" (11:48) hits me so hard, bc I can't get any chain over 20ish so far and it drives me mad. Hearing it over and over again keeps me sane that I am not the unluckiest person doing this and that it's normal to fail.
I've been doing this for 2 days. the best chain I have is 20. the vast majority break before 10. They bungled the pokeradar in this game. it used to be a 2% chance of a random break and now it's 7%, which is huge when you have to reroll that number 40 times.
@@razrv3lc What happens when it breaks? I thought it breaks when you encounter a different Pokemon, at least that's how it used to be. But I've been having this issue where after I catch the Pokemon the pokeradar doesn't activate again and the chain stops. Is that supposed to be how it breaks?
@@Jiroscopio_ Yes, that's it. Super frustrating. If you hear a bell sound after catching (usually while the black loading/transition screen after catching), then your chain continues and you see the moving grass patches. If there's no bell the chain broke. That's the 7 percent for you.

Once I got to 20 I decided to take it seriously, and made it all the way to 40 (and still counting). So Austin John, thank you for getting me my first shiny in BDSP!

The real cool thing about hunting a shiny is that it can just happen randomly out of no where too. I love it when this happens, makes it seem more like it’s meant to be. Will definitely leave a like since this will be useful post game, would love to get a shiny Gardevoir some day.
Awesome guide best one I found. Found my shiny gastrodon literally on the 40th chain no radar reset, and coincidentally the chain broke right after I caught it!! So happy thank you
There are calculations about the shiny odds if the charm would effect wild encounters. With the underground and so on you would have a chance of 1/8 in the end and that would ruin shiny hunting imo. So its fair that they made it the way it is now i think^^
The Shiny Charm is indeed broken. In-game text reads: "A shiny charm said to increase the chance of finding Shiny Pokemon *in the wild.* " The fact that it's not checking wild Pokemon means the feature is broken and not programmed correctly.
Pro tip: don’t register any other key items. Just register the radar. No chance of activating the wrong item and breaking your chain, and it takes less time/user input to reuse the radar after 50 steps. Also, a chain of 39 has 1/200 or 0.5% chance of getting a shiny patch. Chain of 40 has 1/99 or 1.01% chance of a shiny patch. It’s only an increase of .5% to find a shiny, for another 7% chance of breaking your chain. Stay on 39 to find that shiny patch. Plus your shiny on the 40th catch will have 3 guaranteed perfect IVs.
The underground is good for just finding random shinies. You can get the 40 diglett easily by putting your base at an intersection where they appear then enter/exit the base and gather them as they spawn. Also your meter fills up a lot faster online than if you're offline. Then while it's active, you go into a biome and check all spawns for shinies. Shininess is determined when you enter the biome so all you need to do is check each one for shininess and then exit the biome and repeat. I've found I can get two runs through a small biome in 4 minutes--keep in mind, all you have to do is enter, so if you get into the biome the second time before the timer runs out, you'll be able to check a full second round of them which is what tends to happen for small and large biomes. The odds aren't amazing (still 1/2048 which is large) BUT you have to consider that each small biome tends to have 5-7 pokemon so that turns it into a 5:2048, 6:2048, or 7:2048 chance. That's 1/410, 1/341, and 1/293 respectively. The only catch is that you don't get to choose what is shiny at that point. Then with the larger biomes, since there are more pokemon (7-10 spawns total), there's an even bigger chance that one of them will be a shiny. 7:2048, 8:2048, 9:2048, or 10:2048 puts you at 1/410, 1/256, 1/228, and then 1/205. Those odds in the large biomes are very workable. But it comes back to the fact that you're not getting to choose what will be shiny like you would with the pokeradar. This makes the underground hunting method more "just for fun" rather than usable if you're looking for something specific. If you're looking for something specific, you're going to be looking at the full 1/2048 odds.
I actually planned on doing that too. for me it is much more exciting to hunt many different pokemon at the same time not knowing which one it'll be in the end :) (little note: technically your math isn't quite correct. having 5 pokemon in one room for example doesn't make it 5/2048, it makes it 1-(2047/2048)^5 which is a little lower than what you said. but tbh that doesn't change a lot :P)
18:42 he shows this, in certain patches of grass, the more violent it shakes, the chance of hidden ability is that patch. I dunno about the underground though Edit; thanks for the love Austin! ❤️
while rewatching this I got my first in-grass shiny following your advice at a chain of 27! Thanks so much, this was the best explanation I’ve seen yet
I didn’t understand why TikTok was telling me to register only the radar. This video made it extremely clear. Thanks for the clean explanation and example!!
Oof. I'm definitely going to have to watch this multiple times once I beat the game as that was a lot of helpful info and my smooth brain couldn't retain all of it. Thank you for all your hard work!

@@MissLoveMai funny enough when I was playing Sword and Shield to fill out the pokedex I had gotten a shiny Cleffa from an egg. First try I was very shocked as I never had that happen to me before. She is now one of my shiny luck charms when I go shiny hunting

I remember I tried to do this with bidoof but when I got way too bored I broke the chain and the next Pokémon I got right after I broke the chain, I got a shiny bidoof…
Truer words have never been spoken. Like a shiny is a shiny and they're dope and fun to get but all that work with the radar just for the chain to break.. I couldn't do it, if I want a shiny I'll just sit back and hatch eggs.
@@beingofinconceivablehorror1854 not really true? you can chain breed to get a 6IV mon and breed with a foreign 5/6IV ditto and everstone ensures you get the nature you want, so MM is ultimately better for competitive shinies.
I usually keep my 4 pokemon over lvl61 with the ability 'Pickup' in my party. After every couple of catches I check their items. They have a chance to pickup dusk/dawn/shiny stones and rare candies. If I do get one I just save. Since battling the old couple near Trophy Garden with VS seeker makes farming money for Repeat balls very easy. (Post game with amulet coin gives you about 24k per battle meaning 24 Repeat balls per battle)
2 things. This is the best shiny hunt tutorial ive ever seen and second the way you shiny hunt in this game is just perfect, not that tyring and straight forward when u get a shiny
Thanks for this guide!! With this, I’ve caught my first shiny in these remakes!! Shiny Ditto! And I kept farming them till the game cut off my streak. I have 3 of them now!
If this is anything like the originals, you can also encounter full odds shiny Pokémon on a regular shaking patch while chaining. I did that a few times in Pearl and caught 214 shiny Pokémon with the method back in the day between Pearl and Platinum, and wrote up a guide that could be of use for shiny hunters! I have a much busier life these days and a lot of responsibility, but I'm still excited to get the radar and start chaining again like old times!
took me a good couple hours to get to a 40 chain, then an extra hour whilst on 40 to get a shiny patch, thank you so much Austin youve been a great guide throughout these pokemon games, huge respect man!
your videos are always so helpful. ever since i started playing sword and shield at the end of 2020 your videos have been a life saver! i just beat cynthia yesterday and had been using this shiny hunting method since. my chains kept breaking and i was getting discouraged. but this morning i only had a 3 chain and i got a shiny buizel! thanks for the luck austin! great video as always.

hands down best guide out there. GREAT JOB! made some complicated stuff understandable and easy and successfully DEMONSTRATED multiple times with all possible scenarios, top tier content creator here. We are lucky to have you. Keep it up Austin!
Hey, I can confirm you can get a full odds shiny doing this. I was trying to complete my national dex and on route 230 I used my pokeradar with a 0 catch combo and get a shiny weepinbell!
I’m glad I saw this on video. If I tried the pokeradar for the first time after visiting a website I may have canceled the chain on my 40th encounter without knowing that I can just reapply the pokeradar. The mix of super repels and reapplying the pokeradar makes this MUCH easier than I thought it would be initially, which was about as hard to deal with as my Mesprit in a Luxury Ball fiasco
Btw you were not at 1/99 odds (17:52). You were at a chain of 39, not 40, meaning 1/200. The top right shows how many and it needs to say 40 or more for the 1/99. Once you catch ur 40th tho, it can break after so you get the chain of 40 but it breaks afterward, meaning no shiny. Great vid tho just wanted people to be aware
I was wondering why he did that too but it looks like he did it with those odds so his shiny could have the 3IVs and so the chain wouldn’t risk breaking
After two weeks of trying I've finally got a 100 chain, wish I waited to make sure he was shiny but I couldn't stop my self, the excitement was too much!
After I started this method I started catching shinies like crazy! It really does work! Took some time but I was able to catch 7 shiny Eevees in one trip to the trophy garden! I almost made it to 100 with Ponytas, but the chain broke at 89!!! Nothing is more crushing than breaking a chain that high!
That's what I was wondering as well, I would assume that's the most efficient method. As long as there's no risk of breaking the chain by resetting the radar or something like that
Thank you for this in-depth explanation video, Austin! Did anybody else notice the "Medusa"? Nobody? Really? Was that deliberate or an accident? You pronounced it correctly, so I was confused XD ...found another interesting word (Pepeat)... this really wasn't your day, was it XD Stay awesome and much love :3
I can't wait to hunt with this method again. I caught a shiny Pancham and Scatterbug in my Pokemon X game via the Pokeradar, it was definitely no easy task and I messed up a lot. Unfortunately they were lost on my Omega Ruby game, with an ENTIRE box of shinies I caught using either horde method or DexNav. :( Once I get a Switch and Brilliant Diamond, I'm going to yet again fill another box with shinies I caught :) Don't get discouraged with your shiny hunts, and definitely find more reasons to do them. A friend and I would both hunt shinies and then after some time of training and catching more, we'd surprise each other in battle with them. Long car rides where you're not driving are one of the best times to shiny hunt, as well as if you're on break at work, etc. Thank you for the video man, I definitely had to see if there were changes to this method before trying it again. Although it is one of the more frustrating ways to shiny hunt, I think it's one of my favorites as well, and I'd probably rather do it than run back and forth hatching eggs.
Every shiny I’ve ever gotten before this video has been a completely random encounter. I can say as of today that I have successfully completed my first real shiny hunt! Got 3 bagon, thx AJ!
I got past 30 and got so scared, it kept going and I got to thirty nine and just wouldn’t give me a shiny for several resets, I ran out of repels and got three shiny ralts, one for gardevoir, one for gallade, and one for trade. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS GUIDE!!!
Tried this method with Psyduck day 1 (whole day) trying to get to chain 40 no luck highest I got was 32, no shineys. Second day was ready to give up so had a break went of exploring the underground, decided to give it another go in other locations. Not a single psyduck appeared in any of the other locations. So I went back to my original hunting spot and got a shiney Psyduck on the 2nd chain 😅 finally. Then decided to see if I have any more luck, and i did. Somehow managed to get to chain 40 and found 4 more shines before the chain broke on the final one. 5 total in 1 chain. So happy, thanks for the walk through 😁
Got my shiny Chimchar after 23 tries & every time i send it to battle, seeing the Stars never gets old! ^.^ love the videos AustinJohn Cant wait for Pokemon Arceus Content Videos 😁
not sure whoever sees this or if everyone already knows, or if its already been patched by the time you see this: there is a glitch with the pokeradar patches, not sure if its only swarm patches but thats when i had this issue. my theory is that when you enter a battle while swarm pokemon are popped up on your screen, they get stuck and are considered a solid block. and every time you go into a new battle it changes positions. i had gotten a shiny patch for the doduo swarm, but it wouldnt let me walk through it. my fix: press the X button, and go into the menu. then press X again to exit the menu. with swarm pokemon, it would let me see them all again, and when walking up to them they despawn, allowing you to walk in that patch again. hopefully this helped!!!!
So today I managed to get to 40, I couldn't get the shiny because an outbreak happened, but got the 3 IVs Mon. I of course restarted it, BUT I got a really clear picture of how to do it. THANK YOU SO MUCH
Important but very handy detail to note if your gonna be hunting via the Masuda method: You can just make a new profile on your switch and start a new savefile on that one in a different language, then trade over mons from that file to the one you want to breed on via a friend. Or, you can transfer an egg with a good parent inside to that savfile, hatch it there, and then trade the Pokemon back, it'll count as a Pokemon from that savefile. I have tested this, I now have a French Buneary and Gible. Or well, Laporeille and Griknot, I guess...
I attempted the same ralts shiny hunt as shown in the video. On my VERY FIRST ATTEMPT, I got a 39 chain… And it broke on the 40th. Patience is a virtue.
I have watched this video like 20+ times. I want to say thank you because I have successfully hunted Eevee twice because I wanted all of the evolutions (Ended up with 13). I also successfully hunted Shinx (Ended with 5 shinies). Thank you. Bagon is next on my list.

You can at least "nudge" the species of the pokemon to your favor using the statues :) i will try to get a shiny Gible this way.
I actually planned on doing that too. for me it is much more exciting to hunt many different pokemon at the same time not knowing which one it'll be in the end :)
(little note: technically your math isn't quite correct. having 5 pokemon in one room for example doesn't make it 5/2048, it makes it 1-(2047/2048)^5 which is a little lower than what you said. but tbh that doesn't change a lot :P)
4:29 Austin: "That's what's called the Masuda Method"
Text on-screen: _Medusa Method_ :D
But thank you very much for that in-depth analysis
He also said "repeat" balls.. but spelled it as "pepeat" balls :)
Absolutely love the effort you go to, absolute legend. Can’t wait to get to this point
What is the method to getting hidden abilities this time around? Besides grinding 200 BP for a patch
18:42 he shows this, in certain patches of grass, the more violent it shakes, the chance of hidden ability is that patch. I dunno about the underground though
Edit; thanks for the love Austin! ❤️
Can u get a shiny hidden ability grass patch?

I believe they were asking if both the large and shiny patch could appear simultaneously on the same tile.
while rewatching this I got my first in-grass shiny following your advice at a chain of 27! Thanks so much, this was the best explanation I’ve seen yet
I didn’t understand why TikTok was telling me to register only the radar. This video made it extremely clear. Thanks for the clean explanation and example!!

Holy cow, good thing I've never been too worried about shiny hunting lol
Your content never disappoints Austin! Thanks so much for all the info, keep up the great work!
I agree
Agree! 👌🏽
Literally one of the very best Pokémon info TH-camr out there
69th like
Oof. I'm definitely going to have to watch this multiple times once I beat the game as that was a lot of helpful info and my smooth brain couldn't retain all of it. Thank you for all your hard work!
my first ever encounter was a shiny starly. I couldn't catch it because it was the very first pokemon you battle and have to win 😭
That’s incredibly lucky and unlucky at the same time
I love pokeradar so much, it's my absolute favorite method! I've caught dozens of shinies this way, and I'm so excited to hunt more in this game!
Dozens?? Meaning more than 20
This is day 2 trying to get a shiny starter, please wish me luck XD
Luck wished.
I'll also send a prayer that the shiny starlys stay away
Lol I’m on day 3
Me too homie…
gl man!
Was playing last night, only 2 hours in to the game and I ran in to a full odds shiny Psyduck! It’s never happened to me before and promptly added to my team even after choosing Piplup
Same here, not far into starting the game.... BAM shiny bidoof... wish it was something cooler but beggars cant be choosers :)
@@MissLoveMai funny enough when I was playing Sword and Shield to fill out the pokedex I had gotten a shiny Cleffa from an egg. First try I was very shocked as I never had that happen to me before. She is now one of my shiny luck charms when I go shiny hunting
I literally have 0 interest in shiny hunting, but somehow I feel prepared and empowered to do it anyway.. Nice!
“7% is a lot more than you think it is”
The pain in that statement is real XD
I'm 8 hours in and haven't gotten to Hearthome as yet the underground is soo addictive, after seeing this though I'll have to try get to the endgame
Literally was watching this video while playing my first play thru…went into the underground for the first time and found a shiny swablu! Also the overworld sprite of it was not shiny, but when I entered battle it was shiny
I just caught a shiny ✨ ONIX today. Riley tried to kill it so I murdered his Lucario. It is adamant nature.😊
I remember I tried to do this with bidoof but when I got way too bored I broke the chain and the next Pokémon I got right after I broke the chain, I got a shiny bidoof…
This is so confusing and I’ve just come to the conclusion that I’m never gonna be good at Pokémon I don’t have the patience
This is very helpful! I've been using the Pokeradar and didn't know why my chain breaks. Thank you very much for this. Have my like!
Thanks for all your deep dives and hard work! Really appreciate the videos and the time you take! Much love Austin John!
Kudos to those with patience enough to shiny hunt this way.... I'll keep breeding.
Truer words have never been spoken. Like a shiny is a shiny and they're dope and fun to get but all that work with the radar just for the chain to break.. I couldn't do it, if I want a shiny I'll just sit back and hatch eggs.
This seems like a good way to get hidden abilities though, like you will rely on Masuda though
Its really not the same. A shiny through poke radar will be significantly better than a mesuda method shiny because of the guaranteed max ivs.
@@beingofinconceivablehorror1854 not really true? you can chain breed to get a 6IV mon and breed with a foreign 5/6IV ditto and everstone ensures you get the nature you want, so MM is ultimately better for competitive shinies.
@@ghostrick9824 ah okay thanks for explaining
The benefit of chaining Ralts means you can now try and go for specific natures because of Synchronize
Austin: talks about shinies and shows pictures of shinies on screen
Me: stares at the pictures of shiny as i want them
Thank you for this, I always like to have 1 shiny on my team, this time I want a shiny spiritomb on my team.
I think your going to like my next video

🤣🤣 Its ok we still love you. As usual, superb poke-vids !!!
Thanks for this guide!! With this, I’ve caught my first shiny in these remakes!! Shiny Ditto! And I kept farming them till the game cut off my streak. I have 3 of them now!
I caught my first shiny ever!! Silcoon! Evolved him and it’s gorgeous !!!
So going to the edges doesn’t break your chain like previous generations? That’s so much nicer
It does. It broke my chain 4times now
I was just wondering the same thing. Same with double patches next to each other.
took me a good couple hours to get to a 40 chain, then an extra hour whilst on 40 to get a shiny patch, thank you so much Austin youve been a great guide throughout these pokemon games, huge respect man!
mathematically the best way is to stop at 17 and reset the radar until you get a shiny
your videos are always so helpful. ever since i started playing sword and shield at the end of 2020 your videos have been a life saver! i just beat cynthia yesterday and had been using this shiny hunting method since. my chains kept breaking and i was getting discouraged. but this morning i only had a 3 chain and i got a shiny buizel! thanks for the luck austin! great video as always.
I absolutely love your channel and all the extensive & deep content that you create! Thanks so much for all you do Austin! This is my boyfriend's favorite gen and he's stoked to be able to play it again years later, and so am i!
I actually got to a 100 chain. i’m pretty shocked. i named my 100th after you lol
hands down best guide out there. GREAT JOB! made some complicated stuff understandable and easy and successfully DEMONSTRATED multiple times with all possible scenarios, top tier content creator here. We are lucky to have you. Keep it up Austin!
Technically if you lose to the champion than fill out the Pokédex you can get the poke radar before you are champion.
Edit: I’ve done this it works.
yes you just made me very very happy. I know everyone hates masuda method, but i love it still chasing that dream of perfect iv shiny.
this video has done a great job of convincing me not to hunt shinies in this game! thx for the thorough explanation
LOL
Hey, I can confirm you can get a full odds shiny doing this. I was trying to complete my national dex and on route 230 I used my pokeradar with a 0 catch combo and get a shiny weepinbell!
I caught my first Shiny yesterday unknowingly and the one I caught was a Machop 😂
Best shiny hunting video I’ve ever seen!
You made something complicated into something simple!
This is amazing content. Thanks for the work you've been putting in. You are my go-to for explanations of Pokémon mechanics.
First BotW and now Pokemon, I would be lost without this guy
So if you're lucky enough to reach a chain of 39, do you just keep running the 50 steps and redoing the pokeradar until you see the shiny patch?
That's what I was wondering as well, I would assume that's the most efficient method. As long as there's no risk of breaking the chain by resetting the radar or something like that
@@Wtfsmyusername mathematically the best way is to stop at 17 and reset the radar until you get a shiny

Did anybody else notice the "Medusa"?
Nobody? Really?
Was that deliberate or an accident? You pronounced it correctly, so I was confused XD
...found another interesting word (Pepeat)... this really wasn't your day, was it XD

Got a shiny shinx while watching this video for clarification on a chain of 9.
:( Once I get a Switch and Brilliant Diamond, I'm going to yet again fill another box with shinies I caught :)
Don't get discouraged with your shiny hunts, and definitely find more reasons to do them.
“How do you make a Pokémon shiny?” “I don’t know, make it yellower?” BRILLIANT
I got past 30 and got so scared, it kept going and I got to thirty nine and just wouldn’t give me a shiny for several resets, I ran out of repels and got three shiny ralts, one for gardevoir, one for gallade, and one for trade.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS GUIDE!!!
You have the absolute best guides on the internet…thank you :)
Stayed up till 6 beating the game. Following this method within a 5 catch chain I caught a shiny nidorino... I’m floored
thank you for making this video, I've been struggling HARD with the poke radar method

Had no idea about the catching calculator its so useful, great video thanks
Got my shiny Chimchar after 23 tries & every time i send it to battle, seeing the Stars never gets old! ^.^ love the videos AustinJohn Cant wait for Pokemon Arceus Content Videos 😁
not sure whoever sees this or if everyone already knows, or if its already been patched by the time you see this:
there is a glitch with the pokeradar patches, not sure if its only swarm patches but thats when i had this issue. my theory is that when you enter a battle while swarm pokemon are popped up on your screen, they get stuck and are considered a solid block. and every time you go into a new battle it changes positions. i had gotten a shiny patch for the doduo swarm, but it wouldnt let me walk through it. my fix: press the X button, and go into the menu. then press X again to exit the menu. with swarm pokemon, it would let me see them all again, and when walking up to them they despawn, allowing you to walk in that patch again. hopefully this helped!!!!
your tutorials are so good bro u deserve millons of subs🥰
Just earned a subscriber! Great work Austin
So today I managed to get to 40, I couldn't get the shiny because an outbreak happened, but got the 3 IVs Mon. I of course restarted it, BUT I got a really clear picture of how to do it. THANK YOU SO MUCH
Important but very handy detail to note if your gonna be hunting via the Masuda method:
You can just make a new profile on your switch and start a new savefile on that one in a different language, then trade over mons from that file to the one you want to breed on via a friend.
It really works for shiny breeding? I've tried it but for now no results.
@@natureswhisper1397 I've tested it myself, it works, the game counts them as mons from a different region and thats all it rly cares about.
@@TheSpeep wow ok thanks man! I'm going to breed more seriously then and I guess it will work
I attempted the same ralts shiny hunt as shown in the video. On my VERY FIRST ATTEMPT, I got a 39 chain… And it broke on the 40th. Patience is a virtue.
