Sephiroth from an animation standpoint is just amazing. They really nailed the "composed psycho" attitude with him with everything. Moves like F-smash, Up-smash, and bair are super strong and you can tell he's putting his back into it, but at the same time, he's perfectly in control. He doesn't flail around or lose his balance. He moves his sword from point A to point B and anything between those two points fucking DIES.
Down smash though? That's his psycho mode coming out. He let's the persona drop for one second, one "fuck you" blow. It's stupid how violent this move is animation-wise because you can see he's actually putting his back into the move and the results are GLORIOUS

Small correction: Jigglypuff's Pound doesn't have a sourspot. That's a huge part of why the move is so good - it has 16 active frames and maintains the same strength the entire time. She gets better combos off a late hit just because she recovers sooner after it connects.

The reason Byleth down smash see's so much value is a concept in competitive games called mental stack. Mental stack is simple. The brain is a very powerful tool. As a tool, it has the tendency to want to simply as much as it can. The less it has to register information from multiple sources, the faster it can operate. You don't think about driving when you're driving. You don't think about riding a bike when you're riding. Through repetitive action, your brain simplifies these actions into muscle memory so you can focus on other things, like adapting to the harsh landscapes of North American traffic. The more information your brain needs to process, the slower your responses, from which you have to pick the correct option, which can further slow down your response time.

"Criminally underrated" is definitely an apt way to describe Corrins Chainsaw, using it genuinely feels like committing a crime sometimes. Not because it's broken, but because it feels like gaming the system. An automatic frametrap just for charging a different move that outright circumvents a defensive mechanic. Worth noting that DK's Headbonk of Earthly Destruction can also be ledge-grab canceled. That is, canceled by grabbing ledge, so it's a potentially really scary ledge option for DK. It's not the most useful thing in the world when Up Air exists, but a potential early kill.

One thing that gives Headbutt a bit more versatility is that it is ledgegrab cancelable, which can allow it to be much safer, even on block, when used as a defensive tool while getting to the ledge.
As for Mac, I would also add that Mac can charge fsmash, but keep the attack that comes out ambiguous to a much greater benefit than most characters, because of the sheer variety of use cases each of his fsmashes have; yes, you might get the shield breaking downward angle, but you could also get the anti air upward angle.

As for the video itself, Imma make a few guesses before I watch:
Sephiroth's down smash has to be on here, that move can pop shields like a bubble, and sephiroth can force opponents to shield using side B.
Bowser's down B ought to be on here. Especially with how laggy down air, if an opponent tries to shield to punish the down air, but then bowser does down B, pop.
Jigglypuff's pound, as well. Not a dedicated shield breaker, but it does so much for jigglypuff, and it's shield damage is something to be feared.

A few more points in Headbutt's favor, despite the animation, it's got a pretty good disjoint and can catch the opponent unexpectably.
It also grabs ledge, so by timing your held down inputs it can be fairly handy for an armor'd return and can cancel the endlag after the hitbox comes out, leading to some safer shield breaks.
Some good DK mains reallly squeeze everything out of this move.

On the little mac one, if he's charging it, you don't know if it's the kill f-smash or the shield f-smash until he releases it too, which if it was a centralizing situation (maybe in some matchups?), it can be a big factor considering it also has armor.

Shulk's down-smash becomes a deceptively potent shield-locking tool when performed with Buster active; if the first front-facing hitbox hits the opponent's shield, they can't dodge or avoid either of the two hits after. Usually this means they get shield-poked on the third hit due to pushback, but if they're sandwiched between Shulk and a ledge, it essentially becomes a shield break instead.

Dedede's jet hammer is an unsung hero in this list. It's a big enabler of his ledge trap game while having the utility of super armor, it also is a pretty good punish for opponents landing with aireals
Unfortunately, it's hard to justify since Dedede has terrible frame data and mobility, and Jet Hammer doesn't exactly help with that, but it does enhance an already disgusting part of Dedede's game plan

It's unfortunate that Corrin's F smash is held back by its properties. For those who don't know, since the model for the f smash isn't tied to Corrin's F smash, it's treated as something of a projectile, meaning that it always loses to aerials. Even stuff like the late hit of mario nair or weak multi-hit aerials like mario's down air will straight up beat it, although it won't put Corrin in the clank animation since, again, it isn't tied to their hitbox. Corrin's F smash would be an amazing anti air if this wasn't a thing; it's super strong with good range, and it can kill pretty early if it hits the tipper. It's unfortunate because other characters like Shulk don't have this problem, and Shulk's F smash becomes a viable anti air even though it's a multi-hit that doesn't always like to connect properly. I was hoping they'd give Corrin this buff when ultimate was getting patched, but it unfortunately never happened. Same with Bayo, although her f smash works better since it's just really strong and tends to beat out weaker aerials (her whole arm does the same amount of base damage as corrin's tipper f smash).

Huh, suprised Hero didn't make it on this list. I would say he should have been on the list with Oomph+Phyche Up being the "Shield Break move", as that combo literally makes Hero's existence a shield break, lol.
Hero is terrifying with that buff combo on him bc the enemy has zero room for error. 1 hit either results in a sheild break, high shield damage, taking massive pecent damage, or just up & dying outright at low percents.
& it's not even hard to get that buff combo on him.

I'd like to give a quick shoutout to Ganondorf's aerial down-b. It's not an instant shieldbreak, but it's pretty close to it, and landing it when the opponent doesn't expect it has allowed to cheese some stocks and games at % that are certified Ganondorf.

Ken and Ryu have a shieldbreak, that is kind of hidden. Their down throw breaks shields, but not the shield of the character that is thrown, but by a second character, which is getting hit by the chop hitbox. In one on one Scenarios this is only possible on Ice Climbers, if Nana is grabed and Popo shields. Pretty obscure

As a Bowser Jr main I feel like a lot of his kit goes underdiscussed, and that includes his shield break tools, so I'll shout it out here. Jr's Neutral B cannonballs slow as they may be are exceptional for shield pressure because the cannonball doesn't get stopped by hitting shield. The lowest-charge cannonball goes so slow that players need to keep holding shield for a moment too long to let the cannonball pass through them, which eats their shield from contact and then holding it. If the Jr is fast they can then rush in with either Downsmash or spin-out Side B to finish the shield off.
This pairs exceptionally well with having a Mechakoopa walking around which is best stopped with shielding. if you condition your opponent to shield to stop the mechakoopa, they may raise it for that purpose only to eat a cannonball and then get broken by the abovementioned finishers.

My favourite is Game&Watch's down-special. That thing is almost always a guaranteed hit when preceeded by a jab1. And if they hold shield, well, depending on the strength of the absorbed projectile, it's a shieldbreak.
Shoutout to upsmash as well. -6 on a smash attack that deals decent shield damage is stupid.

16:40 see this is why i love Bowser.
Breaks shield, walks away, and then...
    BAM BAM BAM BAM BOOOM!
Bowser is stupid fast, and I'm pretty sure that he can 0-death off a shield break by using the damaging windbox on Fire breath into fully charged F-smash. It's not the easiest thing to do, and so far I've only seen it done on Pichu, but even then, if he can't kill you, you're getting ~40% from Fire breath.

I think another fitting move for this list would've been Villager's down special. Sure, it is a good move on it's own, what with Villager being able to create a wall against most grounded projectiles, (and a danger zone on the stage in general for anyone slower than him,) and a deadly frame 5 move at the push of a button. But it actually has a true shield break setup against the entire roster if you cut the tree down directly onto someone's shield in tangent with the axe.

    • @thegrabbyhands
      @thegrabbyhands 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

its not cutting the tree down its the tree growth into the axe that destroys sheild- its instant too, the moment it grows into your shield it breaks, and tree is still and extremely useful tool even if you don’t sheild break

Because that basically 1 move shield pop with just the touch of delay works so much better than say Little Mac's.

  • @analogies
    @analogies 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

I know you have a certain criteria for this list but as a Hero main i rely on his shield breaking abilities and it’s an oversight not to have him on this list. Sure sometimes he needs buffs to be able to do it, but that’s just how the character functions in general; spells are his game. Oomph + Psyche Up allows for the most insane shield breaks and even Psyche Up alone, with a slightly charged neutral, is a done deal. And then there’s Hatchetman which is a shield breaker at its core with no buffs necessary. One of the most satisfying moves to pull off because of how slow it is to release. You need perfect timing and a perfect read on your opponent, but of course there’s really great set up you can do too like snooze + hatchetman.
If anything Hero should have got an honorable mention on here, but imo he’s one of the best shield breakers in the game
