amazing songwriter. Some folks say that Celine Dion did it better, but I say "NO WAY !!" Eric is unmatched on this one.
With undying respect for Celine, I have to say that no one can ever sing/perform this masterpiece better than Eric, himself. A classically trained pianist, he set his original lyrics and arrangement for "All By Myself" on a melodious concerto by classical composer, Sergio Rachmaninoff. While he had to yield composer rights to the old master, he made this his own with full orchestra backup and his breathy, passionate voice. I loved it when Rachmaninoff played it (on our 78 RPM records), and I loved it even more when Eric gave it new life.
His name was Segei, pronounced with a hard 'g'. Sergio is pronounced very differently including the soft 'g'. :)
Only part of Eric's song made use of Rachmaninoff's concerto (the melody for the verses). The rest was all original.
The original and THE BEST.
Eric just died. This song made me cry at 10 years old with its haunting melody and lyrics. So talented.
This is a masterpiece! Celine performed it beautifully but, Eric Carmen lived this song. His piano skills are mesmerizing and he makes you feel his pain.
She adds a lot of "theatrics" to her version, but she doesn't immerse herself in the loneliness of it the way Eric Carmen does.

Eric Carmen is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist & keyboardist. He was originally with the group "The Raspberries" & they had a few hits with "Go All The Way" "Let's Pretend", "I Wanna Be With You", "Tonight" & "Overnight Sensation. Eric then went solo & had numerous hit songs in the 70's-80's such as "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again", "Hungry Eyes", "She Did It", "That's Rock & Roll", "Make Me Lose Control", "I Wanna Hear It From Your Lips" etc.

The "weeping" GRAND PIANO 🎹 with "Maestro Eric" Carmen! Creating sweeping melodies and a song that was played in skating ⛸️ 🛼 RINKS all over the USA 🇺🇸.
Although this song made Eric Carmen a "millionaire" in 1976,his compositions with his band "The Raspberries" from 1970-1975 are Pop Rock at its finest.
Eric Carmen passed into ETERNITY March 10,2024 at age 74.We miss you dear friend.Thank you for creating masterful music that is imprinted on our souls forever.

Love the song and his voice
He based the melody of this song and Never Fall in Love Again on pieces written by Rachmaninov thinking that the melodies were in the public domain, but that was only inside the US. The Rachmaninov estate is paid royalties for these songs and Rachmaninov is listed as a co-composer.
*Rachmaninoff. It was the melody for the verses, not the into, outro, or chorus that was a re-working of the Rachmaninoff concerto.
The radio version had a very short version of the piano solo towards the end, which i prefer. Next by him should be...never gonna fall in love again...AND, Go All the Way. Youll LOVE them both!

Great singer-songwriter. Probably his signature song, along with Hungry Eyes. An underrated classic of his, and probably the favorite of many of his fans, was "Boats Against The Current"
I would say Never Gonna Fall in Love Again as it was around the same time as this one. Hungry Eyes was later and written by someone else. Go All the Way with the Raspberries is probably the best known of his :)
The Raspberries were a predominantly Beatles cover band when few bands could (and still can't) pull that off. The started performing original songs and then broke up when Carman chose a solo career.
