He said a second tower had hit because the first one had already been struck before he even went in the scool so why not go somewhere else and tend to the matter?
Bush was notified of the first tower just as he arrived at the school. At the time, the report was that it was probably a small propeller plane and may have been an accident.

Okay but how is no one talking about how quickly that goat story escalated? The entire first page is a rhyme about how the goat keeps eating things, and eventually the girl trains the goat not to eat everything. Then on the next page, some guy just shows up, robs their car and drives away, and that's how the story ends.
thank you to bringing attention to that ^^ it's the most random plot ever! the second part just has nothing to do with the first at all 😅 why would you not make children at least read a story with a nice plot wtf

Not even close to this level, but I was once reading a book to a kid in the hospital who underwent brain surgery and needed to be kept calm and her mind stimulated, when I received a call on the hospital line and was quietly told that my father just had a massive heart attack and was going in for surgery, with his chance of survival at less than 25%. Knowing I could do nothing, but I could at least make this kid happy for a few more minutes, I finished reading the chapter. Inside, my mind was screaming and crying, but I kept a calm composure. After I was relieved, I ran downstairs (he was in the same hospital) and found my family. He made it, and he's still alive 22 years later. This all happened in the spring of 2001, mere MONTHS before the 9/11 attack, so when I saw that Bush stayed to read to kids, although the news razz him, I respected that. He knew those kids needed one last moment of calm before their world upended in chaos.

He team is still being informed on the severity of the situation and even with him being the president there isn't much he can directly do in that situation, the air force was already scrambling jets and rescue teams were already on their way to the towers. The best thing he could do as the figure head of our country is to project strength and resolve and eventually speak to the nation when all threats were resolved. But even then that was a very different time and not like today where a president can reach the world from the phone in his pocket. What he did really in my opinion was strategic. He sat listening and gathered his thoughts. His advisers also had time to come up with strategies and ideas that could be then presented in a more coherent and less rushed manner. And at the specific time the second tower was hit what could he have done. It had already happened.
As a teacher, I respect that he stayed until the end of the story. Getting up and dramatically leaving in the middle would have panicked those kids. They deserved to have the adults stay calm and at least pretend they knew what to do.
I don't know why people think it has to be one extreme or the other. Stay exactly as you are vs rush out of the room. It really wouldn't be that difficult to be like "oh goodness, I'm so sorry kids but as it turns out, there's some very important president things I need to take care of," or something like that - could even make it a fairly slow exit, give a few more words and a smile, thank the teacher, all that and casually exit. In no way am I a fan of bush but I have the common sense to know there was little he could do at that point and I understand him wanting to stay calm for the children
Man… I remember when this happened. I was in school and the whole school froze and we were locked to our classroom as all we could do was watch the TV and teachers calmly instructed to call each parents if they were able to pick us up and if not stood by to comfort us. I was in the 4th grade at this time and didn’t know how bad it was until after school ended. Panicking at that moment would only scare the kids and insure distress and chaos.
I was in fourth grade too. I was in class on that morning announcements on TV, as per usual the teacher thought she turned off the TV after announcements. then the news came on about the attack. She turned it off pretty quickly and started sobbing nervously. After I went home it was on all the news I did not know what happened and why nothing just that something terrible happened in the world.
I'll never forget it. I was in middle school in New Jersey... Teachers wouldn't tell us what was going on. There were kids crying and screaming in the hallways because their parents were in the buildings. Jet planes flying fast and low over head. You could see the tree tops touching the ground... We started to protest in the school demanding to know what was going on... The teachers got the TVs set up to show us. I thought it was a movie. That whole day was a movie. I'll never forget it. A week later I went to ground zero. You could see all of the rubble piled up high on every block in the area. Crazy times.
I actually really respect his demeanor in that moment. Panic would do nothing. I was also a kindergartener, just 10 miles from that school, and I wish I'd seen adults stay that calm in the moment, let alone the most powerful man in the country.
He didn’t need to panic, but it would have been more prudent to excuse himself, and promise to make time to come back and reread it. I don’t even know how he could stay there, and focus on the book, knowing that his people were being murdered.
Is it really a virtue to stay calm in this situation and just sit there like nothing is happening? Like other people pointed out panic does nothing good but doing nothing seems very questionable. Especially if you consider what went on after 9/11 in the Middle East led by the same man you're respecting for his demeanor...........

Yep yep, i was 10 years old. I watched it live with my mom on TV. All my siblings was in school but i got sick and threw up on the bus. The one and only time i EVER threw up at school/on bus. When we got to the school the bus driver took me to the nurse and my mom came and picked me up. On the drive home my mom stopped at the A-Market _(a small little country store here in the Appalachian mountains)_ the woman behind the counter knew us pretty good and told my mom to turn on the radio to a news station and said that a plane crashed into the twin towers! My mom had a Mercury Cougar. We listened to radio but my mom was just _interested,_ not freaking out yet. When we got home my mom turned on the TV and we watched the building smoking and she realized how serious it was. Then BOOM the second plane hit live on our TV. My mom was standing in the living room floor and she started stomping up and down screaming. I remember seeing the 2nd plane hit and how ny stonach felt like it dropped. Like tge feeling of a roller coaster going over a hill. Y'know? The inertial feeling you sometimes get in cars.. My uncle (mom's brother) was on an airplane, he traveled alot. Shes frantically trying to call him with our house phone. My uncle was the only person i knew who had a cell phone in 2001, the Appalachian mountains is VERY rural. He traveled so his company provided a cell phone. But it wouldn't work. His wife is on the phone with ny mom and theyre both crying and freaking out that my uncle might be on one of the planes! I remember my eyes watering up and telling my mom to stop screaming and crying please, its gunna be okay. But she shouted at me "THEYRE ATTACKING US JAKE!". Anyways, my uncle was ok. His plane was told to land at the nearest airport immediately. He was stranded at an airport in Michigan. Im a rare case of someone my age who saw it live because i wasnt in school like most people my age. Even my siblings didn't see it happen live and im the youngest in the family. The crazy thing is... Its almost as if i knew something bad was about to happen because i felt so weird that morning and i threw up before the attacks started. I wasn't even sick the rest of the days after the attacks! Kinda crazy. I remember alot more i could go into but thats the basic overview of my story and where i was on 9/11.

I always forget how different 9/11 is for people who were far from it. I was only a 2nd grader too but there was never an opportunity to not panic when you have family who lives/goes to school/works in Manhattan. Ultimately, Bush staying for the children was probably the right move but I think of my 2nd Grade teacher who was a huge comfort by telling us what was going on as calmly as possible.
There was a plane that hit the Pentagon, and another that would've almost certainly hit the White House, had the hijackers not been overwhelmed with the passengers, who refused to let it happen once they had heard about the rest of the attacks. He wasn't able to get to the White House until that evening, so it was a test of strength not to panic.
Bush had advisors who were working behind the scenes. He made a committee the school and too these children that he would be there with them. These kids are now in their late 20s, early 30s. They don't have the same memory of that day as the rest of us. "Where were u when the towers were hit?" I was in school. I was watching the morning news production made for the school, and than my history class switched over to watch local news, as we always did. We were learning about current events and how they can become something in our history books. Even a more ironic class lesson have I had. These kids however. They get to remember how calm their President was. And how he put his commitments to these young children, first. He did cut his vist short, he didn't stay and vist with the kids and their teachers like he had planned to. Because he did have a job to do. But 20 minutes to make these kids know they were important... nothing could replace it.
Yeah it's a good thing Bush was there or those kids might remember 9/11 as a fucked up and traffic incident. I'm sorry, but anyone who thinks that spending time with kids is more important then responding to an attack against the country you're supposed to be running is a moron. I was in Miami, FL 6th grade history class when it happened and all of the sudden there were bomb threats and parents scrambling to pick up their kids. That one moment changed my life as well as everyone around me forever. The word “terrorist” was foreign to me at that time but soon became burned in my mind. I used to wonder what life would have been without 9/11, but now I’ve been alive longer than the age I was when it happened, so it’s becoming more and more difficult to imagine - The butterfly effect is still fascinating to think about. Life’s weird
Scaring a bunch of children by rushing out wouldn’t have done anything to help the country. His calm demeanor allowed those kids to continue being kids in that moment. I remember watching the little tv in my parents bedroom during 9/11 when I was about 5. It was really early in the morning because we live in California and we were all getting ready for the day. My mom was crying because my grandparents were supposed to be coming back into LAX from the east coast that morning (the same trajectory as at least one of the planes that hit the towers), and her panic (which was completely justified) scared me a lot. My dad calmly walked up behind me and put his hand on my shoulder and it calmed me down big time. I think that people forget that kids only get one shot at being children. Don’t make them grow up before they need to.
I remember that day like it was yesterday. The one story about that day that stands out for me: A friend of my brother worked in IT and was going into NYC. On the way to work He got stuck in traffic, where he watched the Twin Tower go up in smoke, then fell to the ground. That experience was very traumatic to him. See, he supposed to be at work in the WTC that morning when the planes hit. However, just before he left for work, his mother told him that he fixes everybody elses computers and insisted he better fix her computer before he leaves the house. His mother saved his life by making him late for work.
Sarasota county has a strange relation to the attacks. I go to school in the same area that the attackers took flight training, venice FL, and I live in sarasota. Its certainly strange
He said a second tower had hit because the first one had already been struck before he even went in the scool so why not go somewhere else and tend to the matter?
Bush was notified of the first tower just as he arrived at the school. At the time, the report was that it was probably a small propeller plane and may have been an accident.

Absolutely. For him to have made the kids day, and to continue to do so through consistency, pose, promise and commitment was smart. What else was there for him to do really? I absolutely agree. Sitting like that in a few minutes of calm probably allowed him to process the words "America is under attack" more than he would have been able to if he'd immediately gotten all the details right at that moment. I agree with the faculty. Imagine putting yourself in that scenario. You lead a country with pride, and have the opportunity to read a book to some kids. You are told you are under a terrorist attack. There is nothing you can do immediately to stop the threat, thousands are dying as you speak. All you can do is either burst out of the room and do nothing or keep reading with the stress and anxiety building up behind you thinking of what to do next as you are reading a story book to America’s future. -I am NOT saying that former president was a good man, he had many faults. I only think he did the right course of action THEN. (Be for real please, what was he going to do? grab the plane like a toy??)

I'm pretty sure we all loved our history teachers. They're the one who are actually cool. But that's just my experience, I don't know about you.
Imagine if he just stood up like “WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE!!! FOR FUCKS SAKE EVERYBODY RUN!! SAVE YOURSELVES!!!”
Those last words are nothing short of poetic
Trying to justify that instead of admitting that Bush made a mistake is imbecilic.
Pure publicity stunt. He was literally behind the 9/11 attacks
And then he went on to sanction a couple of horrific wars and a regime of torture that persists to this day.

Wtf? You do know that hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians were killed right??? He's a fucking war criminal, period.
Why? Genuinely why? The dude literally started a war in Iraq over nothing and killed hundreds of thousands of people. In what way does he deserve sympathy. Serial killers will be in higher levels of hell than George W. Bush. Not to mention his lack of action during 9/11 and the drafting of the patriot act. Plus the rumors of 9/11 being something of a Pearl Harbor 2: electric boogaloo. As far as I’m concerned if there are any people who deserve torture and hanging it’s Bush and Cheney.
History isn't being kind to him, you're just whitewashing history and forgetting all the fucked up things he did, up to and including literal war crimes

Life’s weird
I always thought it was neat that he stayed for the rest of his scheduled visit.
