What i like is that you can hear the blowoff valve every time you change gears. Its something that we tend to forget with all the dual clutch/torque converter gearboxes nowadays
Fun fact: they don't put blow-off valves in modern cars anymore, they replaced them with recirculation valves. Their purpose is identical, the difference is that while the blow-off valve vents air directly into the atmosphere, the recirculation valve dumps it back into the intake which minimizes lag even further. They are also quieter as a result. I own the automatic version and I can confirm that you can hear it working, especially if you shift early. The turbo sound in general is surprisingly audible for such a small turbo.
I've rented one of these puppies in the US and let me tell you, sitting on the rear backbox with no OPF and B58 gen 2 IS DA THING. You dont need to drive it hard or anything but would give me goosebumps on overun or gear changes and throttle lift. Was the ZF but damn. The EU one is just lacking the sound in a big way.
Had an auto 2019 BMW Z4 M40i a few years ago. Loved the car, but everytime I got back in my Mazda MX-5 Sport Recaro it was more fun. Why? Manual Gearbox. Six weeks ago I purchased a new Z4 M40i Handschalter. Heaven!!!! I now have a car that has a different personality and one that comes alive. As Max says, the Z4 is one of 4 cars I own and I don't hark back to that manual MX-5, it had too many shortcomings over the Z4. Value for money the little MX-5ND is still the one to beat, but been there, done that. Great presentation and nice to see someone actually flooring the loud pedal.

I am beyond thrilled BMW added the option of a manual transmission to this car. I do wish, however, that it could be chosen as a standalone option rather than embedded within an expensive package that enforces a single colour amongst other things.
imo this car just needs the classic bmw front lights and it would be perfect. the front lights on it are just too hyuandish if that makes sense. doesn't look like the classic german style
I highly, highly doubt it. BMW wants you to buy the M3 if you want the manual. And they removed the manual transmission option from the G20/G21 models for all markets after a few model years. Even 318d models now come standard with the 8-speed automatic transmission from ZF.
Car's awesome, looks good, reliable engine, proper manual etc to be perfect i just think it needs a bit more power to spin those wheels in powerslides because the chassis is so go and has a lot of grip, like 400-450hp at least...something a nice remap can do and we all know this engine can do a lot more hp.
Where did you rent it from? USA? Which rental company? I have a trip in Los Angeles in spring and want to rent either 718 boxstet or this exact z4 m40i. Own a x3 m40i.
@tedstriker4278 Yeah that's pretty much the standard for most non sporty vehicles there. However, the Z4 M40i now became a guaranteed model if you book this class. You just need to find a rental station where it's available.
I recently bought one in Glacier Silver with red leather interior, with the ZF8 gearbox. And even though I can tune it as i want with MHD and XHP, seeing the 6MT version coming out almost makes me regret buying mine...
Great colour combination with the green and the tan but the tan leather should have extended to the door cards to make it feel even more bespoke. Seems to not do so was down to cost which cheapens the effect somewhat.
You still get leather on the door cards, but it's indeed odd that it's black? I sat in a tan interior pre-facelift Z4 and I'm 100% sure the tan leather extended into the door cards, and I just confirmed it with google images. Very strange.
@@jspera4187I also ordered one with tan inserts in the doors (US version) and could select from all body colors. Mine has just been shipped and I am anxiously awaiting its arrival but fear the weather may not break in time to really enjoy the car when I receive it.
Had the opportunity to drive one last week....love the B58 in our x3 M40i...and it's certainly very powerful in the z4 Handschalter. I think the plain black door cards with colored leather seats just adds to its old school vibe and I like that. I also very much like the iDrive 7 in our x3....and prefer it over the newer, no buttons idrive 8 and 8.5 variants. That's one strike against a new M2 I'm also considering. So do I replace my MINI Roadster S OR keep the R59 and get the M2? Such difficult decisions ;-)

@@touri78 if driving experience is the most important thing then Z4 no question.
