Nice to hear it talked about this way. Too many swear by the old "someone should be able to pull the club from your hand" ideal. Whatever a player uses should be in control. For me, if I use a slower tempo takeaway a larger range of pressures are comfortable and easy to maintain, but that's not what my natural swing wants to do. When I put pressure in my thumb and index but keep everything else light, something emphasized by Shawn Clement in a number of videos, a bear couldn't take the club away but my wrists and arms stay free of tension and I can go at the ball as lightly or as hard as I want to. I think this is something every golfer needs to find for themselves, along with what tempo works for them, and far too many instructors teach it their way instead of giving the students the information and helping them to make the best decision. Your two non-negotiables are great.
....cont....yo, who the hell is out here thumbs downing this awesome, FREE f’n knowledge EC and Sweet Mary bust their ass to bless us with? I don’t understand how someone can be so miserably ungrateful...Unbelievable.....Instead of practicing golf shit, how about you start working on how not to be a hater. Thanks again EC and Mary, the vast vast majority of us love what you guys do.
I slowed down my back swing a little, keeps me from over rotating, tightening my arms, and increasing grip pressure. Keeps me relaxed and made a huge difference in my swing. When my grip pressure spikes it’s a chain reaction and throws everything else out. Good video
I personally am a light grip. The difference in my tight grip swing and loose grip are night and day. Only with the light grip pressure can I actually feel the club hitting the sweet spot on the club which results in high swing speed, higher arc, and extra distance. Your tip on maintaining constant light grip pressure through out the entire swing was the missing jigsaw piece to my swing. Thanks........ I am finally blasting effortless long and high 3 and 4 irons shots that I never thought I would master
Very good Eric, in lockdown now so practicing in the garden. I have discovered that I personally needed to grip the club quite firmly as I was able to strike the ball before turf. Previously I was a lot less firm and was sometimes good and sometimes lousy, generally inconsistent. Your video confirmed something I have discovered, so thanks again for some clarity.
Very good! Manuel De La Torre taught similar ideas. Keep the arms soft, grip pressure constant although the grip pressure will probably increase during the forward swing due to the force exerted by the arm and club swinging.
I searched for grip pressure and re-discovered this video. Recently I found that my tendency to grip light was detrimental to my golf game. While playing in my 9 hole league this week, the first four holes were not good. My bad shots were caused by loosening my grip pressure during the down swing or at impact. On the 5th hole, I focused only on firming up my grip pressure as well as keeping connection between my arms and upper torso. I hit a nice drive down the middle on par 5. A really good 3 wood to within 58 yards of the pin and a lob wedge to 5 feet. Just missed the downhill breaking birdie putt. Hole 6 hit a 6 iron 170 yards to 8 feet and holed out the birdie putt. Hole 7 hit a solid drive down the middle. An 8 iron to the green and two putts for par. Hole 8 a solid drive in the fairway, a 3 wood to 140 yards and an 8 iron to 7 feet and holed another birdie putt! Hole 9 my longest drive (250 yards) and hit green with my approach. Two putts for par. I was +7 through first 4 holes and finished +5 for a 41.
Great video Eric! I can also feel the tenseness in my shoulders. If I concentrate on being relaxed when playing, I get all sorts of comments on what a smooth swing I take. Still a work in progress but it’s getting better. I think we all forget that it’s a swing motion and not a serious of static positions so it needs to be fluid and athletic. Keep up the great videos!
I was starting to think of this while watching shallowing videos. I like to think of it as backswing loose start the downswing loose, but when you get to around waste high apply a slight squeeze through the follow through Simplifies my swing thoughts. I say loose squeeze throw. But don’t try to break the club. I feel like the looseness gets me down more in the slot but the squeeze at the right time allows me to put some pressure in the swing
Another great and common sense approach video Eric. I've practiced a lot and totally forgotten about the importance of grip pressure and the effect it has on my swing, and just remembered it today and 'voila' my tempo returned and I was hitting much better shots. Do you think people do forget this and then get used to a too tight grip and then can't 'feel' the club and what it's doing?
Dear Mr. Eric From Brazil to Eric Cogorno Golf. I am Brazilian, I live in Brazil and I have difficulties with the English language. Forgive the text. A great presentation, very good didactic and with simplicity. Congratulations. Roberto
good tip about arms. Grip pressure - compare someone's handshake from a office worker and a construction worker, totally different. I shook the hand of a ex tour pro and thought he was going to break my hand. without us knowing the grip pressure increases when you swing due to a natural reaction of wanting to hold the club.
As for me, I have a bad habit of griping way to tight just before impact. I have been working to correct this, in fact one of the things I worked on tonight at the range and it's getting better, tonight was my best night. Great video as always.
I am currently without a teacher. But my caddie has some practice. I'm thinking of giving it a try. The caddy pulls the club out of my hands so I can check my pressure. What is your opinion? From Brazil Thank you very much. Roberto
Another good one! Seems like the place where an increase in grip pressure is very common is coming into the ball - where the common tendency is to try to "Hit" the ball.
Hey Santiago---a good start is just being aware of it! You can wrap a piece of paper around the grip and grip on top of that to help heighten awareness as an exaggerated drill
Hey Eric! Thanks for uploading this video. Are you supposed to grip the club with equal grip pressure between the left and right hand? Or do you grip to be tighter in the left and looser in the right? Thanks
Dear Eric Cogorno, Thanks for answering. Your presentation, I repeat, is great. My profile, as I already informed, is great and with simplicity. My profile is beginner and elderly. Please allow me to ask a question.
Can't consciously do this, maintain or keep the same pressure. How do it do this and how do you know it is the same? It is a feel and how do you know it is the same from start to finish? It may be light at the start, but it is probably a little more at the top.
Hey Eric quick question i feel like I swing a little better when I have more grip pressure in my lead hand my left hand and lighter pressure in my right hand (right handed golfer) from start to finish is this normal?
I tend to grip it a little tighter. However when I start the downswing my left hand tends to go to a 10/10 which actually causes me to cup it slightly. Still trying to figure it out. Is that common to grip tighter at transition and cup it?
it doesn't matter what your grip pressure is, as long as you have control of the club and your grip pressure stays "CONSISTENT" or constant throughout your swing as you mention in this video. If you grasp it tighter at the ball or anywhere in the swing... it will ruin the swing. Great video. Do a couple swings where 100% of your focus is on your grip pressure throughout the swing.
Another fantastic video EC...You and Sweet Mary are killin it out here.....Gracias .....The last thing anyone needs is to be on the number 1 tee-box burning out their Kung-fu grip when they got 17 more holes to play...Even if your pimp hand is as strong as EC’s, you don’t wanna be out on the track tryin to keep em in line, keep em straight, keep em actin right with a fatigued out pimp hand, it’s gonna adversely affect your Pretty Tony in The Mack like backhand when you go to swing that club.
I think you can find out rather quickly if you’re holding the club too tight. Especially with a lower loft, driver, woods high irons. If the ball comes out hot and knuckly darts to one side or the other quickly you’re holding the club too tight. You won’t feel the ball come off the face. If you have the correct pressure you’ll feel the face wrap around the ball through impact. I feel the higher lofted the club is the firmer you should hold the club depending on the shot. Chip shot you’re not really trying to hinge the wrists etc but with driver you want more speed. Atleast it’s helped me maybe help others as well
You have a tight grip. You grip tightly. Sorry, I hate to be the grammar police, but it is very distracting. Otherwise, you did really good with your video. (See what I mean?)
Greatest advice ever!! Keeping the tension out of my arms, forearms completely fixed my swing.
Love it

BEST tip ever SAME grip pressure start to impact . hard to find this tip anywhere.
Thanks, Laurie! Hope it helps!
This is also the best tip for putting and distance control. Hardly anyone ever talks about this and it has transformed me as a putter
I slowed down my back swing a little, keeps me from over rotating, tightening my arms, and increasing grip pressure. Keeps me relaxed and made a huge difference in my swing. When my grip pressure spikes it’s a chain reaction and throws everything else out. Good video

Yes 100%....something we generally don't think about often
Dear Mr. Eric From Brazil to Eric Cogorno Golf. I am Brazilian, I live in Brazil and I have difficulties with the English language. Forgive the text. A great presentation, very good didactic and with simplicity. Congratulations. Roberto
Thanks Roberto! Appreciate that!

Thats one way to try it---cant say for sure without seeing your swing and knowing more unfortunately

Thanks! Yes for sure....also see it a lot as someone starts the takeaway
Thank you can’t wait to play.
Dear Eric, is there any difference in left hand and right hand grip pressure?
Keeping them feeling the same would be a nice place to start!
One of the aha moments for me is when i ask one professional what is their hand pressure points. This is very important, thanks again eric
Our pleasure, Christian!
do you have a drill for me to do for constant grip pressure? Because I feel like my grip gets tighter on the downswing
Thanks
Hey Rahul! I would start with gripping with equal pressure between both hands and see what works best for you from there👍
Thanks for watching!
Dear Eric Cogorno, Thanks for answering. Your presentation, I repeat, is great. My profile, as I already informed, is great and with simplicity. My profile is beginner and elderly. Please allow me to ask a question.
Thank you!
For whatever reason, a loose grip causes a slice for me. A loose lead hand, and tight trail hand, causes me to draw all day.
Whatever works :)
Can't consciously do this, maintain or keep the same pressure. How do it do this and how do you know it is the same? It is a feel and how do you know it is the same from start to finish? It may be light at the start, but it is probably a little more at the top.
Just a feel certainly as we cannot measure it at the moment
The philosophy I've found works for me is 'secure grip loose wrists' i.e. only tight fingers
I like it!
Hey Eric quick question i feel like I swing a little better when I have more grip pressure in my lead hand my left hand and lighter pressure in my right hand (right handed golfer) from start to finish is this normal?
Thats perfectly fine!
That middle ground pressure is gold!
Yes!
I tend to grip it a little tighter. However when I start the downswing my left hand tends to go to a 10/10 which actually causes me to cup it slightly. Still trying to figure it out. Is that common to grip tighter at transition and cup it?
I would not recommend that....but common....yes.
Constant grip pressure is benefit to gain good rhythm
Yup!

Appreciate you watching the channel my friend!
I find that a 2 or 3 grip pressure causes me to unhinge a bit early at impact. I get a high iron shot but don’t cover the ball as well as I’d like.
Hey Don! Hope you get it sorted my friend!
Eric there is no need for the disclaimer "in your opinion".
You're Eric Cogorno, your opinion is the only only opinion.
Lol
Don't tense at impact
I think the best FEEL is to have the grip pressure stay the "same".....even if thats not exactly what's really happening
It’s very natural to hit and tense , once I learned to relax through the impact zone , my consistency became solid under pressure
1st view. i’m sure it will be great.
:)
Let's invent Bluetooth pressure grip tape😂
I like it-you build it and I'll follow!
You have a tight grip. You grip tightly. Sorry, I hate to be the grammar police, but it is very distracting. Otherwise, you did really good with your video. (See what I mean?)
Thanks for the feedback! Grammar is not one of my skills! All the best
Not impressed!
Thank you!!!
