Steve, you have given me the best explaination and steps for luminosity masking. I am not new to photography, but I am a raw beginner with Ps and Lr post processing. Thank you so much.
Your video gave me some insights into photoshop that I did not know existed, such as the intersect / intersect command, and the "apply image" tool. I used your your instructions to create 3 levels of lightness and shadows and one mid-tone for three different images. I also created three recordings of the commands that I used for each of the three images. When I played the recorded commands on different images, I found that the highlights and shadows were not accurately selected. In other words, the luminosity masks work best on the images from which they were created. They are not generic.
Steve - another superb video. The v1.2 of the luminosity panel no longer has the orton effects etc as far as I can see when I installed just now. Are you going to include them again at some point or as a separate panel perhaps ? Keep up the brilliant work !
@@SteveArnoldPhoto superb. Thank you Steve 👍👌🍻 my apologies - when I uninstalled 1.1 and then installed 1.2 the layers panel was covering that area in PS. Its looking great
Thanks for your videos Steve. Quite helpful. With all due respect for your panel, I am baffled why Adobe hasn't applied their own version of a simplified, AI Lum Mask system, especially given the popularity of Luminosity Masking over the past 5 years or so.
Hi Steve. Just curious, I find using Select - Color Range to create my luminosity masks easier. In there you can not only select colors but also easily create and finetune luminosity masks based on highlights, midtones or shadows. Is there some kind of disadvantage with this method? I ask since everyone seems to use some kind of panel or is fiddling around with the channels.
I have been inspired by Steve's awesome tutorials for a while and now his luminosity panel and the tutorials that go with it are just amazing. You cannot put a price to this - it is inspiring to watch and learn. I recommend you give it a try
Hi David - you can log back into your account at postprocessingmastery.com and it'll be available to download on the same page you downloaded from originally. (assuming you're using Photoshop CC - the CS5/6 update is coming soon). Cheers!
When I try to create multiple highlight channels each new channel gets lighter and lighter but isn't it suppose to get darker and darker as it narrows in on the highlights, what am I doing wrong
@@awad80 Sounds like you haven't selected the layer mask of the adjustment layer before attempting to Apply Image. Make sure you click on the layer mask first, then go to the Apply Image option in the menu.

Hi Wayne, the Orton effect is still there - Under the "Effects" tab (screenshot: snag.gy/pk2DtY.jpg)

Ahh yeah, I guess cos it's a bit bigger now the other parts got pushed down a little. I forgot that might happen! Cheers!

Wonder if Photoshop 2023 has a improvement on Luminosity masking?
Wonderful, can I use levels rather than curves?
Absolutely you can, the concept works for any and all layers and adjustments that have a layer mask
@@SteveArnoldPhoto when I try to use apply image I found it with grey color ( unavailable ) how to recover it please

Why Apply Image to make the layer mask? Why not just make the selection and open curves adjustment layer?
