The problems that I had with the film was that in the protest scene Tracy runs away. This is not so in the stage version where she gets arrested with the rest of the protesters and then Link eventually breaks her out of jail. Because of that I lost respect for the character of Tracy because she is a bit of a coward. The whole song and dance sequence where Velma seduces Wilbur into making it look like Wilbur is cheating on Edna could have been cut from the film because the two make up two scenes later. It never gets brought up again by anybody. Amber never actually sings Cooties. Why? I thought John Travolta was creepy and not very funny. And why was Amber raised up in a chair? The Von Tussles could have sued the station for that. Overall it was pretty good but I had my reservations about it
Hairspray the Musical is excellent. Awesome, awesome music, good story, loveable characters, portrayed well by the Broadway cast... I thought the 2007 movie adaptation was pretty shit. Mostly because of John Travolta and Amanda Bynes. They couldn't sing and they took a lot of the power out of their scenes. Also, the plot changes didn't make a lot of sense.

He's dead wrong about Tarantino & Eli Roth. It's Roth who needs to be shipped off in a box. 'Inglorious Basterds' was very good. Roth is very bad at every film he directs. 'Hairspray' is like 'The Producers' in that the stage versions and remakes were vulgar, unfunny and vastly inferior in every way from the originals. I'm starting to this this Kermode doesn't know shit about movies. He talks a good game though, like Ebert. What a dolt.
