- I was with Eddie Howe this morning and, I have to say, it was a strong performance from the Newcastle United head coach, as he responded to last week's terrible display at Fulham.
What did he say when I asked him if he knew what his best XI was? And what did he say about under-performing stars like Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon?
There's also the injury to Alexander Isak - will he play against Manchester City?

Awful news on a personal and professional level for Darren Eales and his family - all wishes with them for what it is worth.
What about Krafth..? As opposed to a number of players this season, he has over performed and should be considered in the back 4

Gutted for Darren Eales and his family, best wishes hope he makes a full recovery. Best 11: Pope, Tripps, Schar, Kelly, Hall, Bruno, Tonali, J7, Gordon LW, Isak, Barnes RW. Key for me is Kelly CB for pace, Tonali in the 6ish role allowing Bruno more freedom and Gordon LW where he plays his most devastating football. Yes Barnes is good cutting in but with Tripps, Bruno and him on the right I feel they could all work well together.

Eddie Howe Need Change Formation From 433 To 451
we already play in 4 5 1, it’s a 433 with the wingers tucked in. so would change absolutely nothing
Please stop thinking about Tino at left back it doesn’t work and we have seen that many times. Lewis Hall is the future and we have to go with him, yes he is young and will have his ups and downs but he is super talented and will be our left back for the next 10 years.
Hall leaves the shop door wide open at least ten times every game.
Hall should go to midfield deffo he’s quality just not good 1 v 1 you feel me
I think Hall is potentially a cracking player but he is not a full back. Defensively he’s all over the place but looks the real deal potentially when he goes forward.

Those things happened last year and the reason we had so many injuries. It’s not sustainable and I guess we are just trying to find a balance

I’d like to see that side BUT with Schar and Kelly paired .. both capable of a telling pass and that bit extra pace that Kelly has in his locker offers better cover behind our left back .

I'd still like Howe to try a back 3/5 with Hall given the opportunity to drift into space. He looks very comfortable in a LCM position. Either way, we can't continue with the current setup because it clearly isn't working.
I liked the tone of this press conference. Eddie is no fool. He knows better than anyone what the problems are and it seems he’s pulled no punches with the players in addressing them. The comments about training were interesting. You can’t play a high intensity pressing game unless everyone is super fit. I think that explains a lot of Eddie’s substitutions and why he didn’t start Tonali - he’s had to try and save fresh legs for later. He andKlopp were the first coaches to grasp the fact the under the new rules, games are lasting about 10 minutes longer and now from about 80 minutes on wards is a great time to capitalise on superior fitness levels - if you’ve got them.
Longstaff lost himself last season. Revealed hereafter that he had been playing with painkiller injections!
I really dislike the way some fans have turned on Longstaff when he was so unselfish last season when he was playing through an injury for the sake of the team. Sure, he’s got limitations by we’ve been grateful for his strengths when we needed them. He ended last season absolutely knackered having given everything.
Tons of players are using anti inflammatory injections or tablets due to injurys, some end up with stomach ulcers and habits due to it. Its not something specific Longstaff.

Could the lack of effort from Gordon, Joelinton, Livramento, etc, have' anything to do with wages. The team wages list was published a couple of times in recent weeks and whilst we don't know how accurate it may be, it must be unsettling when you see some average or fringe players getting paid more than you. Also, when you're mixing with players fro. other clubs for so long like Gordon and Livramento did with the England squad, they must all talk about wages.

Great commentary as always Craig and impressed that EH acknowledged your points. As for starting 11, i think Kelly instead of Burn, Hall instead of Livramento ( but put him as a 6 - or possibly even Bruno - yes!) - in which case Willock with Sandro and J7 with Gordon as a floater with obviously Isak up front ( but must give Osula a go at some point). Barnes then as an impact sub depending on the situation. Hows that?
On paper it's difficult to argue with that 11. I like that you have Barnes on left over Gordon, I'd probably drop Joelinton based on form
Hope Darren Eales makes a quick recovery, your team seems on paper definitely the potential strongest they just need to play to their best standard. Hall would be good in place of Livramento but he has defensive frailty.
Good 11 but I’d drop Burn just because of Haaland - so Kelly for me there.
Also best wishes to Darren - hope he has a full recovery.
Bruno is still too patchy. For a player his age, it's worrying. At this point, he should be near enough the finished picture, but he's nowhere near consistent enough to be so.
Any news on Isaks new contract Craig? There was a lot of talk of it being imminent 6 months ago but seems to have gone very quiet since…

The intensity has gone. I would like it back please. Our press was 5-6 players, when we were playing at our best. We press in twos now.
Not being trained for the pressing game, so simply not fit enough to play it.
City didnt have the guile to break down Arsenal last week while we were exposed with a midfield 3. Might be worth trying a midfield 4 - Big Joe, Bruno, Tonali and Longstaff with Gordon and Barnes up front. But the same problems persist - injury prone centre forwards, poor right wing, no no. 6, slow centre halves. Reaping the rewards of a really poor summer!
NuFC needs a Kante /Busquets/ Makalele type player in front of back four as we have plenty of good defenders. This will help attack minded players like Bruno & Tonali to unlock.defenses with creative passes through the lines to the front 3. Pope needs to leearn how to distribute better. The best keepers can spot a direct pass and influence play.

Disagree with hall not grabbing the left back position. It’s his but Howe puts Kelly in. Don’t rate him so far. Hall gives us so much more going forward.

The players have to bring back the intensity we need. If attitudes don't improve Eddie should bench a few for a while and give the likes of Osula a chance.
Eddie will probably play 4 - 3 - 3 yet again. Craig's choices seem good for that formation but his choice for left back was strange. However Hall & Kelly haven't impressed at left back, while imo neither Burn nor Tripps could deal with Bernado Silva - consequently I understand why Craig has chosen Tino at left back, but it would be a gamble.
Said to you last summer.. We Were an isak injury away from disaster.... Look whats happened.. 15m on ousala was a waste.. Hes another ben parkinson tbh... Scouts eddie and mitchell need 20 Lashes from his excellency cause this isnt what fans nor saudi (as we are always told) expect... Standards have slipped in 3 windows.. From bruno botman. Isak... Howes style of play is becoming outdated. We had a good crack making the cup final and losing to one of the worst Man Utd sides of all time. Competed against European giants but ultimately not good enough to progress to knockouts. The club needs a new direction, unless Howe has some magic ingredients we don’t know about.
I don't feel comfortable picking an 11 with the way they've all been performing in that system.
In theory the midfield Bruno big Jo and sandro / Gordon isak Barnes picks itself but we havnt seen it work or even been implemented properly yet.
The full backs are a case are a debate of youth and pace vrs stability and experience
The whole system needs sorted out and then Howe can see wh9ch pieces of the jig saw for best I reckon
If I was Anthony Gordon and seen a player like Lloyd Kelly getting paid in excess of 100k and I was on say 60k I think I would have the hump , let's face it money IS a factor

I think we should give Lloyd Kelly a go at CB I don't want to see Burn or Kelly at LB for me they are square pegs in round holes I think Hall is our best Lb BUT i'm not sure his best position is lb I feel he could offer more in Midfield however we're not really short in midfield this season however we were last season when he still wasn't getting a look in

It seems to me Miggy is just getting forced out but forget Longstaff being the ONE who will run for you....Miggy has been sorely missed this season for me. He's been an integral part of that press since Eddie got there and he's been tossed aside. He is hit and miss where technical ability is concerned but as a first line of defence there is nobody better in the squad for me.
I would start Tonali, Bruno and Joelinton. They need to step up now. Full back is tricky. I leave it to Eddie. I would love to see us compete tomorrow. Keep up the good work, Craig. Sad news about Darren Eales.❤
Craig you have mentioned on social media a lot, and I agree with you that there is a massive gap between our midfield and our defence and then the opposition number 10 is always in space. Can you ask Eddie if he has plans in place to rectify this.

Simple- the players know about the psr situation and thought a black and white rocket was going to take off. Now they know that’s not the case. Coupled with no reinforcements this last summer.

I'm struggling with the full backs as well. My front two is weighted to the left, so I'm going for trippiers crossing on the right and Livramento's pace on the left.
Interesting no Joelinton. He’s the one who, when at his best, can make a huge difference. He’s been nowhere that in recent weeks, though.

Sorry to hear about Darren Eales , my heart goes out to him and I hope he beats it , as for your starting 11 I’d drop burn every time for Kelly Kelly is far better as a cb than Dan burn and he’s faster but because Eddie has his favorites he won’t drop burn but playing Kelly out of position isn’t showing his best place and how good he is , his last club said if he gets permanent cb position at Newcastle they would be shocked not to see him get England start he’s that good , but Eddie playing another player out of position to fill a position that he’s not done anything about , just like the RW playing Gordon on the right isn’t working, the fact that Eddie wanted guehi and nothing else says he was happy to start the season with this problem, it also shows Murphy and miggy just aren’t good enough, dead wood that needs moved on , we should of let miggy go for 10 million because the end of this season after not playing him he will be worth 5 unless he walks on a free , we either buy a RW player and he doesn’t play or Gordon or Barnes played and he still doesn’t play , but my worry is if Barnes or Gordon or both get injured even small we have nobody to play , this shows are transfer market wasn’t fit for purpose as are squad players aren’t good enough to play , that’s why he’s still playing injured players rather than the squad players and I think isak injury happened first game as you can see him limping and he didn’t come off , not the wolves game I think they have played him injured for 5 games, watch the first game , he hurt his foot them and hasn’t been the same since , Osula is a joke we shouldn’t of spent the money on a player he has no reason to play him this season even with the two strikers injured, Gordon as 3rd striker ha says is ok but watching it it doesn’t work , Wilson even when back won’t stay fit long so isak playing every game isn’t good again and it’s going to hurt us massively, just like Gordon and burn, if injured it will devastate the season, Bruno needs his captain armband removed it’s not working the same happened to Kelly the pressure got to him and made his game worse ,
Kelly at left centre back is perhaps worth exploring now, I agree. But Howe doesn’t seem to want to go down that avenue.
@@craighope_dailymail no he won’t change his favorite players no matter what he’d rather play players out of position to keep certain players in the spot they like , burn needs taken off and used as a back up to Kelly and the RW is a disgrace, the second 11 isn’t good enough and need replaced soon as possible to give the first 11 a chance of rest when needed or to help with injuries, we can’t play are squad players because they aren’t good enough at this level, that includes longstaff I like him got no bad feelings about him and I wish him well but he’s no where near a player who would get a start in any team in the top half and would struggle to get a start even in the bottom half unless just promoted , we can’t fight for a European place with players at just a basic level

Eddie's ultra high intensity press simply isnt sustainable week in week out. You will see it come through in injuries, burn out and so on. You need more than that and that is why Howe will only take us so far.

You might be right but we got 4th place playing high intensity football. Last season was a run of freak injuries and huge amount of fixture congestion when our squad was at its weakest. Lots of teams play with high intensity so it’s not unusual in the modern game. I think we are suffering from a lack of top competition caused by poor (for whatever reasons) transfer windows. The squad needs new blood, freshening up with different crack and banter etc. Anyone who has played in good teams whatever the level knows the excitement of getting new top players to play with. HWTL!
@@kete3690We’re the freak injuries last season because of the high intensity football we played in our top 4 season and the start of last season. Players can only play at that level for so long before risking injury. It’s not sustainable if for every good season based on high intensity football we have another so or more of fatigue and injuries.
Best question at the press conference. Great analysis as always. My one gripe is with PSR we can't upgrade the squad quickly hence the club haven't bought a CB, RW and No6 so buying a class striker ( that costs £40-50 million) is simply a calculated risk and not an obvious mistake.

Our best left back is not Tino, IMO. I'd maybe push Burn to LB, and bring Kelly in to CH. But Hall fills me with dread.

I've always hoped we would sign a typical number 6 that could release Bruno to go further up field and not have as many defensive tasks, so I've been thinkering with the possibility for an inverted defender or similar.
We have two players in our defense that I think could fulfill such a role. Schär and Tripper, so picture these two formations.
When defending:
Trippier/Livramento - Schär - Burn/Kelly/Botman - Livramento/Kelly/Hall

Giving Joelinton more freedom to go forward in this attacking formation.
We get a good box in midfield to play out. Schär can easily drop back if one of the backs see an opportunity to overload one of the sides.
I have a feeling this would let Bruno shine even more with his creativity in the last third.
Barnes is a better finisher than Gordon. Barnes should be on the left. Longstaff is a bench player at best
Big lose for us losing Darren at the end of the season, but we wish him and his family all the best and hope his health improves.🖤🤍🖤🤍
