- A lack of funding and resources has created a public emergency on Nevada’s roads, retired Nevada State Police Col. Anne Carpenter said in a one-on-one interview Tuesday.
This is the way Nevada defends the State Police. The Legislature is negligent on this problem.
They turn down applicants for the most miniscule reasons and wonder why they're understaffed.
Good , don’t need under qualified loose cannon ass holes that will produce more civil lawsuits that cost the tax payers even more . Bet anything they funding has increased year over year. For the state they just don’t allocate do the proper places or pay worth a damn . Maybe raise taxes in ls Vegas to cover the cost . Or just keep complaining that “nobody wants to work anymore “
What do you expect when the department is super picky. They turn people who apply away like metro but don't want to offer metro benefits. I worked with a guy who was fresh out of the marines and got denied by NHP and then was hired by metro right after.

Unfortunately, we don't have the money . They are leaving because of the lack of support.
Those in law enforcement believe that mental illness is of major concern. This needs to be addressed. Security guards can support the police. There is no other way. Do you want more riots and stores being looted? I live in a country that the people have been brought up with violent video games. They can't reason and love to make fun of others when they themselves have no answers and dropped out of school.

Pay them more , the community’s safety is priceless. Some People just throw their car around using no blinkers speeding , cutting off every car driving calm, or semi just so they can get to their 15 min destination in 13 mins, they don’t care about them selves much more others , more troopers will make these wreckless drivers think twice or slow down and be mindful for those of us who wanna safely make it home to our loved ones.

Underpaid and to die that way just to keep us safe. Give these guys raises for their honorable work and more people will join the agency and clean up our highways and help our city be safe.

Same exact problem with the Tehama county sheriffs office in California, troopers aren’t paid enough compared to neighboring agencies now the staffing is so bad they cut out daytime patrols, chp now has to assist with daytime life threatening situations

Even if they get a raise, which wouldn't happen until the end of the summer, in July of this year the retirement contribution required among sworn Troopers/officers will be increased by 6%. So a 15% raise becomes only 9%. The bleeding will not stop.

Outrageous the lack of support the State gives our law enforcement....by comparison the Department of Health and Human Welfare takes 1/3 of the State budget...a lot 'lopsided'...
I'll continue to repeat myself and be ignored. The state of Nevada is facing a Constitutional barrier that is becoming a crisis. The current constitution restricts tax revenue options and keeps lawmakers from having any options or even time to debate the changes needed to move forward.
Unless some serious changes are made to the state constitution, the state is structurally unable to provide essential government services.
Think of what state services have recently failed to meet basic needs. I can think of DMV, department of corrections, DETR, education, elections, hospital oversight, healthcare availability, environmental regulations, and nearly every state agency involved in trade licensing has proven unable to perform their basic functions. State employees have low pay, nearly no benefits and low morale due to not having the resources to do their jobs.
What is the state doing properly? I got nothing. Sorry.
The problem is the state constitution. No income tax is allowed. Only 14% of the state is available for private development and therefore property tax revenue. Residential property taxes are unable to climb when those who own homes experience a spike in their value due to a constitutional limit of how much the tax can increase. Most importantly in my opinion, the state legislature is only allowed to be in session 120 days every other year.
The legislature has time to make the budget and meet with each agency to get a progress report and issue marching orders that they hope to have implemented before the next biannual session. In many cases, the legislators and the agency head are different people when the next session happens so there is no continuity.
I've been a Nevada resident since 1985. The population was small and the state government was structured to be the bare minimum to meet the obligations of statehood. There weren't enough people for the population to expect anything more from the state and local government. The vast majority of the people in the state now have come from places where they expect the state to provide more than the formality of being part of the United States.
I consider myself a conservative extremist but even I can see that without the state constitution being severely amended or rewritten as other states have done, we are going to face severe challenges.
Bruh we don't need an income tax in Nevada. We need the state to spend less on handouts to able bodied people and more on basic services to fix the issues you are trying to address
Taxes are not the issue. We have one of the highest sales tax in the country. The highest vehicle registration fees. Gas tax, one of the highest. Don't forget the marijuana tax. There is no shortage of money.
we dont have income tax, but some of the highest car registrations in the nation. so essentially, we pay state income taxes that way.

I'm sorry but it is hard for me to be sympathetic to either side when numbers aren't mentioned. What is the starting salary? Is there pay based on seniority? How much overtime does the average Trooper get? What is the average salary for the Troopers?
Starting is 54k, unlimited OT because of shortages, but no life/work balance if you have to work OT all the time to make a decent living risking your life everyday

Monday, I saw a truck with palm leafs in the back swerving all around lanes. It wasn't even a question he was drunk and he never got pulled over as far as I saw.
Yesterday, a BMW was swerving all through the lanes in traffic speeding cutting everyone off.
Also yesterday, a truck almost got in a multi vehicle crash because he was being tailgates by a guy who was road raging and turned his brights on so the guy couldn't see. The truck got over and almost hit a car, that car swerved behind the road raging car who was stomping on his brakes to not hit the car that was Infront of the truck. I had to swerve out into the emergency lane, the car behind me had to slam on his breaks and swerve into the left lane almost hitting and being hit by cars.
At least where I'm driving, it's a lack of police presence

in july of this year starting pay is about 60k for state troopers.

The main problem is PERS retirement. As a state employee, 24% of your paycheck automatically goes towards retirement before taxes.

Many of us ARE veterans. Myself included. Veterans across the country tend to gravitate toward state police highway patrol agencies more than city police or county sherrifs because of the military-type structure that I feel so at home in ☺️
