  • For centuries, Venice has been an important city for Armenians, from the first merchants in the Middle Ages to the opening of the Armenian College Moorat Raphael in the nineteenth century. Of course, the Monastery of San Lazzaro, belonging to the Mekhitarists, is also one of the main landmarks to visit the Armenian Venice. Andiamo!

Thank you for covering this sacred and special island, San Lazzaro. May I add to your video, the buildings and gardens there are beautifully maintained, it is a wonderful tourist attraction. It serves as both a monastery to educate Armenian priests, as well as a museum. Visitors can take a tour, buy beautiful foods made by the priests, pray in the church, etc. Armenians are so grateful to be a part of Italy’s Venetian islands. 🇦🇲 🤍 🇮🇹

Very nice video. I came by these places as I explored Venice a few years back, but unfortunately I wasn-t able to talk to anyone. Your accent is lovely!

Armenia had a connection to the Italians very long ago, because of the Silk Road

There is a lot more to explore. The offspring of the latest Armenian dynasty Lusigneans - Charlotte is buried there. The influence of the Armenian merchants was quite big in terms of volumes of commerce. It should be noted that Venetian as well as Florentine merchants had the same rights and privileges in Cilicia as the Armenian merchants in Venice and Florence. The order by which this happened is kept in the library bearing the signature of the Armenian king Levon the III (I think) and in essence it is the first drafted most favorite nation clause, at least to my knowledge. There is a curios detail about the columns of St. Marco. It is known that they were brought to Venice from Constantinople and on some of them there are Armenian graffiti from 11 century.
