I don’t often get super wet boots, but I do like my share of winter snow activities and I usually just let my damp footwear dry naturally. However, several weekends ago, my boots got very wet after a day hike where the trail zigzagged across a stream a total of 14 times. Naturally, my mind starts thinking, how do I get these to dry fast enough to avoid mold and mildew, while not subjecting my cloths dryer to heavy boots? I know, lets build a boot dryer!
The best place to find plans to build something like this is the internet and more specifically, TH-cam. After a quick search I found a video from the Rated Red channel making a boot dryer using some PVC pipe and an electric air mattress pump. It looked easy enough, but I didn’t want to spend a lot of money. Even though these plans would probably set you back no more than $30 to $35, I wanted to spend even less. So, I thought about what did I have at the house that I could use as a pump. When I finally realized that I had an old CPAP device in my closet that I no longer used, I knew there was a reason I never threw it out. Since building the dryer I’ve used it 3 times and it works beautifully. This was an easy project and fun enough to satisfy my continuing need make things.
The source for the original build can be found below and the Rated Red TH-cam channel.

So I was ready to go get the pvc and attempt a build, I couldn’t decide on the fan method. Then this guy from Cali inspires me… We too had a CPAP not being used, + extra hoses. I literally only bought a 3/4 Tee and insert the hoses into each boot. Thanks for the outside the box idear

Haha...oh man that's awesome!! Really glad to hear this method is getting used somewhere else and it's working out for you too.
I have a feeling this method might take off with the Phillip's recall on all these machines. Who knows when I'll get my replacement, but I'll have another one at some point "repurpose"!
Really appreciate you letting me know this helped you out. ATB!!

@@ColemanOutdoors update. Had a day off, so just let the cpap run with the hoses in my work boots…. Somehow, they feel fluffier and comfortabler

That is freakin' awesome! Were they soaked through or just wet on the inside?

I live in northern Colorado. We’re in a meltdown from the previous snowfall, which was a doozie. So a little wet from weather, and a little from the other

Side note, I now “dry” my slippers while at work. I’m freaking Mr Rodgers!… but in the cool way!

Haha a dislike?!! Screw them. Then change the video. I thought it was simple enough. Thought about a boot drier but too expensive. Nice work, I think a lot of people like diy videos. You can double that as a bull head for practicing your lassoing you do. Had a pvc bull while in Texas.

Hahaha....that's funny. Maybe it was a CPAP owner that's disgusted by my repurposing of this wonderful machine.
Yeah, I thought the same thing...who wants to spend money on a boot dryer?! Thankfully the CPAP was collecting dust in the closet.
And I'll start my ropin' practice this eveing!🐮

Coleman outdoors, we too have an older cpap not being used… and you can’t give ‘em away either! It’s gonna get used now! Excellent tip!

Excellent idea thank you so much for this. I was wondering if a Shop-Vac on blower mode might work as well. Hopefully, it wouldn't blow your boots off. LOL.

Thanks, Ryan! Yeah, I really think anything that can push air through the pipe. Shop-vac might even be better with how much more powerful it is.

Nice project! I did like it, even though, personally, most of the time, I get wet boots where I don't have electricity.

    • @ColemanOutdoors
      @ColemanOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you, buddy! Maybe we'll have to come up with a dryer that ducts hot air from a small fire up into the boots. That way you can keep those feet dry in the back country.😁

If you got a battery and an inverter, the CPAP only pulls 20 watts
