Madagascar, the world's main source of vanilla, has seen traditional farming methods upset by a recent craving for the spice in China. While the Madagascan government stands by, Chinese profiteers wreak havoc on the trade.
Vanilla was introduced to Madagascar by French colonisers in the 19th century, which brought cheap Chinese labour to the farms. Papa Be is a 66-year-old descendent of this first wave of Chinese immigrants. Like his father before him he practises artisanal methods and takes pride in his crop. But his trade is a precarious one. "As growers, we're in the palm of those who have all the money - the owners and the buyers", he explains. Now his homeland has discovered a taste for vanilla, which has led to a surge in demand for the spice. Enter a second wave of Chinese immigrants. The new arrivals are business people who control the wholesale buying and export of the spice and profit from cheap local labour. A lack of contracts with workers makes it easy to fire disobedient employees. "That's how you manage workers here", says Cindy, an investor who moved to Madagascar with the second arrival of Chinese immigrants in the 1990s. For President Rajaonarimampianina, who came to power in a military coup in 2009, the unpopular Chinese newcomers are a necessary evil. He needs foreign investment: "Our markets are completely open, and that means China too", he says.

There should be a web site where farmers can sell their top quality vanilla directly to the Western consumers at full retail price.

Cindy can only abuse the natives until they have enough of her. While growing up, we had a Chinese neighbor engaged in buying coconut meat. They too were abusive with their workers. They were so hated in the neighborhood my mother would not even allow me to play with their son of my age. When they were robbed in the middle of the night, no neighbor answered their call for help. The couple were beaten up and hog tied and the neighbors thought, they deserved it.

2000 Years ago, the Arabs enslaved and colonized Africans. From the year 1450 to 1960 the Europeans enslaved and colonized Africans. From the year 1960 to 2000 the invisible hand of the cold war enslaved and colonized Africans. From 2000 and ongoing the Chinese are enslaving, manipulating and colonizing Africans. Due to his lack of savvy, know how, his predisposition to exploitation, the Chinese have taken advantage of Africa and its rich resources, in fact based on available data both in terms of land acquisition and natural resources over $27 trillion has been unjustly taken through various deals- yet Africans have gotten a meager $280 billion out of those investments. Take the case of Senegal, where the Chinese have recently bought out right their international Airport located in Yioff Senegal, then loan the country $11 billion to build an new airport, nearly 10 times the cost of building an international Airport. In a country with a meager $31 billion PPP [GDP], repaying that loan will be nearly impossible. What the Chinese really want is the Yioff land in Senegal among others . Sadly Senegal will soon join the rank of countries deceived by China the likes of Sri Lanka were the government signed a 99-year lease with the Chinese government to operate their ports and airports. Case in point, the Chinese have and are currently building the biggest deep-seaport port in East Africa near Mombassa Kenya, coupled with biggest military based in Djibouti Africa, millions of miles of rails track throughout East Africa (Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia etc… their core objective is both cleared and nefarious, in that the Chinese plant to eventually dump trillion of dollars worth the cheaply made Chinese goods throughout Africa in the Belt and Road Initiative using their tentacles rail network. Recently the Chinese bought out right four additional international airports in West Africa (in Burkina Faso, Togo, the Guinea Bissau, as well as Sierra Leone and Cameroon). In Senegal for instance to build the airport the Chinese loaned Senegal $11 billions1/3 of the country GDP and 11 times the cost of building. When I first visited Senegal in 1985, the country was a fine republic with great potential, recently however (2015), Senegal has become a dump of humanity, the poverty, the decay and years of corruption and incompetence due to the inaptitude of both current and former president Wade. We can most certainly predict, soon enough Senegal like many other Africans will be bounded in chains, this time around however by the Chinese.

Gluluman to most, writing a long persuasive comments will have an effect on the ignorant and mis-educated BUT, all it takes is a little bit knowledge of euRIPeans or Caucasian history to see clearly what you are, a liar!......a liar by omission! Just take a look at the details and spot where you are taking shit!
True, Africa is in a hell of a mess! Who’s fault is it? The Caucasian and his mixed cousin the Arab!
What you fear is that my people will learn about the dangers of the spiritual poison of religion and wake up and its coming that explains why you decided to try to spread confusion here by mixing truth with lies!
At the very least, the Chinese will fuck up the blood sucking parasitic CFA which is crippled the economy of 14 African countries!
Sir, you know perfectly well that world war really started the day you criminal defects got on boats to colonize the planet! The reason Chinese are having success because they have realized this simple fact!......
YOUR economists and ecologists are screaming because they know that Capitalism and technology is a short lived perceived success and only true progress and prosperity is to be in harmony and balance with others and nature! Something you types have never had!
      ........got that!

Gluluman: I share your view on the ambitious and self-serving Chinese Belt & Road Initiative. I strongly believe that it's a spectacular magic trick of the century being pulled by China! It's unbelievable that these nations somehow are convinced to take up massive Chinese debts and spend them on Chinese companies to build a Chinese centered international infrastructure network, which would obviously facilitate cripplingly cheap Chinese manufactured goods to flood their markets while the reverse trade flows from these markets to China would largely be precious raw materials, low-value handicrafts and probably seafoods and agricultural produces! Well, any sober and thinking nation could easily see that it's a terrible deal and, therefore, the cost of building the above Belt and Road Initiative should largely be picked up by China, not the other way around!

Something you don't value and others value and then reach a common value to form a business deal. If you don't like, just don't sell, there is no need to pour your hatred to the people who is doing business with you. Otherwise, no business no life

2024 China is having problems caused by their ruling party. The belt and road projects, some, are halted. Imitation Vanilla is superior (6 vs $14) and cheaper. Sounds like the politicians are hurting the farmers. That presidents speech is not being done, so he is the fool (but likes what $$ he gets from the deals.) Yes, someone else should deal with the farmers, but maybe the gvmt would halt new buyers / shipping.

I just want to know what will happen to Madagascar if French or Chinese left the country. Will they be able to independently develop themselves into a rich country? Advancement takes hard work and time. Madagascar had lots of time. What were they doing before the French and Chinese came over? I'm trying to compare Madagascar to Taiwan for example. Taiwan was able to develop itself into a rich nation, and it was colonized by Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, Chinese, and Japanese. It had more struggles than Madagascar with very little resources, but it was able to transform itself. It manufactures electronic parts, petrochemical products, one of the of the highest educated people on earth. Another example was Singapore. It was colonized by Chinese and British and was briefly occupied by Japanese during WWII, but it's the country with highest income per capita in the OECD. Again, Singapore has very little resources. What brings the country wealth and greatness is the determination of its people - the hard work and sacrifice and perseverance. The government had to make harsh choices but it helped got the country to where it is today. So again, why Madagascar failed where other nations of similar size and history of colonization were able to succeed.

This Frenchman talked badly about Chinese as if French colonized Madgasgar with a good intention to benefit only local people. French people definitely will be bitter about others who try to share part of the vanilla profit. Again, what is wrong if Chinese want to work hard to succeed? The Chinese woman searches employees to prevent them from stealing, yes, that is sad, believe me, the boss in China never search their employee since most of Chinese employees do not steal. Stealing should be the first cause to be blamed.

@Richard's World Traveler I feel you. But let me give my most honest answer. Most locals work only to eat. On the other hand, the Chinese or any other economically successful immigrants work not solely to eat but to also pursue greatness through wealth. Both groups work hard. But their different driving force as reason to work set them apart. I am placing it here not to debate, but to create awareness and to invite other races to join the game because I frankly think that the locals really deserve more.

Those products from the vanilla probably most sell to western countries. Do you understand me? If the Chinese factories can have a good profit, the payment to Madagascar farmer will be higher.
But that's impossible because the western buyers wouldn't pay that much to the Chinese. So here the Chinese become the bad guys, and the real buyers of those vanilla goods blame the Chinese for offering to little to the vanilla farmers.
Same goes to the blame of sweatshop in China or other developing countries, the westerners blame the sweatshop but never willing to pay more to buy the products which can make the workers better. I call this hypocrite.

This is a perfect example of how different cultures and races can integrate and live in harmony. Create an economy, import workers willingly, introduce them to the native culture but create a comfortable region where they can settle in and call home. Then become an important, productive part of the nation. Why can't we dominate that model in most nation's in the world ?

Why don't people simply buy directly from quality vanilla bean producers? I know one thing or a fact, I know there must be some European/American based runned businesses in Madagascar to make premium Vanilla, else no one would ever buy them. Someone needs to make an App or a business platform just for buying top notch Vanilla directly from serious vanilla cultivators so that all of the quality vanilla producers does not loose out or fade away.

They would get more by creating a direct premium brand from specific farmers to the foodie world in Europe and USA. i.e the Co-Op model. It depends if the farmers are actually allowed to sell on "completely open" "world markets." Doubtful since the farmers aren't allowed to even control their own growing season.

how bout the thought of lets take responsibility for the way our life is! Stop blaming someone else. It is pure greed from every level. I didn't see any locals taking responsibility or caring about their own community. Take back community and get the damn governments out of your business. White, black, yellow, red should not matter but that seems to still be an issue with many. I feel for the farmers everywhere, it is the same here in the usa too, farmers are taken advantage of here. This is disgusting and i do understand many hands are tied but we have to start at a community level first. Take care of each other and fuck the governments for they are only out for themselves. Take back our communities is a good place to start. Stop using race for it goes FAR deeper then that but this is what those that have been running things long before the "white" peoples came to other countries want, to keep us all divided. We have to move beyond this or it will continue to be the same ol shit. I am not here to bash anyone but i feel for all those that have been displaced by others. We have all been lied to so know who the "enemy" really is and love your brothers and sisters and show compassion to all and let us stop blaming others and take back our power for we give it away when we blame others, that is all i am saying. I love this Earth and her people and we need to come together not use race as a reason for hate, we are all related even those that kill for greed.

Because the chinese are protected by the law, they have the connectioms, they have the money, they own the means of production and they are the comercial intermediaries. You have various ways of exploitation and discrimination: commercial, labour, juridic, linguistic, etc. Jist mantain yoir workers under certain limits that makes them reproduce their condition and be alienated while you accumulate.
This is partly possible because of one simple reason, that is that Madagascar has a colonial structure, a colonial country is a capitalist country, therefore a classist country, a racist country etc.
The new chinese are different from the old ones, you can see these don't get mixed with black people, they are closed groups, this way there is less distribution of wealth and less social mobility which means more opportunities to exploit workers.
Another important aspect to analyze is that of the culture of work, chinese and french who come from big industrial and complex societies with a greater social distance and a indirect satisfaction of their necesities think and plan in long terms while madagascans have more inmediate relationships, closer trustworthy relationships, other ways of social cooperation and security which allow them for short term thought and other ways of regulating the emotions and resisting civilization as a way of changing the conduct and making pathetic french and chinese people.
Finally, that french guy talking about comminist chinese has no idea what he is talking about, if chinese were comunist they would be socializing the means of production instead of privatizing them.
