  • Vanilla Slice: Prices for vanilla have skyrocketed in recent years, with some offering a 500% increase in buying prices. As a consequence, a gold rush has begun as farmers scramble to capitalise on the price increase.

Wow, you have made me fall in love with Madagascar. I have no idea why I kept putting this place aside, but dearest, what a beautiful island and somehow it also gives me a Jamaican feel. And the people are so beautiful. As for vanilla, all the best to them and I hope their government helps them maximise the upturn in the cycle and saving for the future - and to become industrialists themselves.

It's good that these people found an economic outlet. Hopefully, without outside and unwanted influence, they can add more ways to generate livelihood for other people living in Madagascar.
It would be great if Venezuela could do the same thing.
Inflation would be good to learn about, and also it would be good to know about overhead and profit margin so as to see how to make a solid GDP based structure for your country.
Don't become so reliant on one product or service to become self-sufficient and sustainable as a country. Even when prices are controlled, without some inventive and creative skill of mind-set, failing is almost certain. Look at oil...and now we have automation of labor...so when machines come to pick that vanilla....
Whoa...and with a view from above in video and knowing in Madagascar they have no working sewerage or plumbling...one bad flood can infest your entire crops of vanilla with deadly bacteria in one hard rainfall...levels are important to think of for a variety of reason here...drainage and direction of flow. You don't need Bernoulli's equation for that. Macedonians did this 4,000 years ago.
    Good Luck.

Good for them for finding away to capitalize on their --- probably only -- natural resource. I wish we had vanilla in my country as a profitable crop --- instead we have frankincense. But nobody wants it, I mean it's not widely used as fragrance.

You’re looking too far ahead. Without adequate law enforcement, they will always be plagued by theft and the industry will not take off. If they don’t step up security, sooner or later, the farmers only option is to sell their land to foreign plantation companies who can provide private security.

Not to mention the fact that vanilla is naturally pollinated by one specific species of stingless bee in its native Mexico: Every single flower must be carefully pollinated by hand in Madagascar. This is just not a sustainable practice: They need to either import and protect that bee species to let them do that work or else find some mechanical way to do it.

Many reasons. However something important to remember, you always need to understand the markets you appeal to. A prime example of this is baby formula. In Australia you can buy it on the shelf for $20, and many Chinese buy it by the trolley load. The reasoning? In China it can be sold for up to 5 x the price. But the retailer has no understanding of that market and therefore misses that opportunity.

They portray the small men who get paid with vanilla bean for their work to feed their families as thugs and middlemen driving up the prices without a shed of evidence to support their baseless claims. Yet, they show the real Frenchmen who are the true middlemen and hustlers who hoard all of the vanilla beans, they show them as the employers and good company that supports the community. Common now, please see beyond your snout waryaahee.

Locals don't need any foreigners for any market access. You must, you have have to understand to differentiate when the locals are desperate and need outside help and when the world needs your product to move. They're where they're needed more than they need at this point. However, as long as people are being like you and easily distracted they will miss the main point.

Lack of vitamin D from not enough sunlight is a common cause for skin problems, especially in the northern hemisphere like Europe, Northern Asia and Northern America. It is the reason why we whites have light skin ... because our skin adapted to live in darker regions with less shiny climate. Africans living in those regions don't get enough vitamin D from the sun and need to compensate that through eating or extra sunbathing.

Vanilla is not the problem, mono-culture is. Whatever crop, it becomes a problem when overdoing it by disrupting the eco balance. Teach people to not outcompete all other plant species in any major area, and promote agricultural diversity instead so that people in developing countries can still profit, while keeping operations sustainable for better long-term income, environmental impact and trade conditions. Win-win.

@@rickmorgan9715 What a comment... "low IQ"... You didn't put forward any argument, but basically said "stupid" but phrased it to seem like you're not a jerk, which you are regardless.
So, expert, tell me how you'd explain the concept of "long term investment" or "infrastructure" to someone who happened to be born in a poor country whose whole exposure to life was the poor, simple life people their parents had and the whole generation in the past? And then explain how that even *remotely* relates to IQ.
Way smarter people like you said "the next Einstein could be towing the fields in a remote corner of Asia right now and never realize it, all down to circumstances" (paraphrasing).
But never mind the whole complexity of psychology, the effects of upbringing, environment, no schools, no confidence, etc, disregard all of that and simply call them stupid, you ignorant fool.
