When it comes to clothes that have holes, cut them up and turn them into cleaning rags, or turn them into a T-shirt quilt, or donate the stuff to homeless shelters, or even for the really bad things, cut off the frayed bits, turn them into flat pieces or into knotted things and donate them as dog blankets or dog toys to animal shelters.
I HATE the velvet hangers because of the feeling and sound so I have to stick with the regular thick plastic ones. I don't know how people do it. Sliding on and off quickly is so much easier but doesn't look as good. No fair! How do you have room to hang jeans?? I have so much crap. Omg. And shoe boxes on the top shelf things. I feel like I need them for kid projects. Lol I'm a mess!!! Do you keep your "fat" pregnant clothes or get new every pregnancy? Should I just get rid of them?? What if my out of style boots and shoes come back in style and I'm cool having "vintage" shoes? Omg I'm dying. I have to do it but I can't.

Great job! I'm a firm believer that investing in matching hangers is the most impactful change. Even an organized closet looks a bit chaotic with different plastic and wire hangers. Where as matching hangers (i love the black velvet ones) just looks so classy and organized.
I found that as long as you keep the same color hangers together it helps with the organizational part of the closet if you cant afford all new hangers ☺️
@@gabbyd1802 Exactly... my husband LIKES wire hangers for shirts because the ones that are formed right keep the collar standing up and they look good when you put them on. So we migrated the wire hangers to his shirt area. I like wooden hangers for my slacks - so that section all matches. We just sorted what we had and used them in groups. Looks great.
Incredible transformation. I’ve also spent the last year decluttering and have been loving it. Now I’ve gotten into the habit of going through everyone’s closet and toys every few months to keep things clear and fresh 😄
just cuz we have a walk-in closet doesnt mean we need to fill it up! its such a great feeling to see empty spaces too! the best tip i ever heard from peter walsh was to hang all of our clothes with the hanger backwards, then aftr wearing & putting it back (hanging back up the correct way)..after 6-12 months we see that we only actually wear like 13% of all the clothes..!?😳😛
Yes, that is a great trick... After that point, anything I haven't worn I have to be really tough about. Either I FORCE myself to wear it or out it goes!
I use to have a big shopping problem ! Over the years I really kept it under control by only buying exactly what I need . I started fresh wjth shoes for example one pair of nude heals one pair of black . One pair of sneakers and like 3 sandals . When those things are like really over worn I change out. There’s no more Unnecessary buying anymore

It made me laugh later when you said it ❤️ keep doing what your doing , your my personal favorite on TH-cam. With ilea’s pax it kind of limits how much you can do depending on how many of each organizing systems you put in. For example you only put four shoe racks in so your limited to that many shoes. Do you think you’ll like that or be stuck not knowing where to put shoes. With your system now you are more capable of filling large areas up. I was going to put it in, it’s so pretty but thought about later if I wanted to change things It could be hard or I would have to buy separate new pieces for it if i wanted to change it up.

I once read that you have to find your "enough" (meaning the amount of things you feel comfortable with - not too many and not too few) and this great piece of advice has stuck with me ever since. It's much better than having a fixed number or something like that 🙂 I've been decluttering for several years at this point and am pretty much finished with my stuff and with what I inherited from my late brother. If newly bought items don't work as well or as intended I will declutter them right away; I'm also much more picky and deliberate when it comes to buying. I'm pretty much a minimalist, I guess, but not an extreme one. I also help my mom from time to time with her decluttering. She was a borderline hoarder and still struggles with keeping things tidy, but she's come a long way.
Very nice! I’m on day 3 of doing the exact same declutter of my closet. Recently retired. Purging many years worth of business clothes and many sizes due to cancer weight gain/ loss over the years. I’m determined to keep only what fits now and skip all the what if I gain more and need clothes or lose more and need clothes. Time to live in the present and clear out all the other stuff choking mt closet. ❤️😃

I started decluttering years ago and have never stopped. I have clothes that I love and I'm happy with. There are things that I buy only if I know I'm going to wear each items. And those velvet hangers are the bomb saves so much room.
I went from 7 spaces for clothes down to two . I’m like you I buy clothes quite often . Now I have my clothes sorted if I buy something I get rid of something . I also put use it or loose tags on some things if the next time I sort the wardrobe I haven’t used it it can go 😊

Boot Shapers- you can probably use flexible cutting boards from the dollar store for about the same price or less and very inexpensively use just cardboard (package stores give away boxes some with dividers). I let my boots air-out overnight when I wear them then lie them neatly in a large clear plastic bin in the bottom of my closet, usually tall boots in the bottom. I also organize my shirts or whatever by, say for instance, sleeve length and type (button or pullover and smaller categories, if necessary) then within those groups by color if I have more than a few pieces. The acronym ROY G. BIV stands for the colors that makes up the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. That's just what works best for me. Thank you Michelle O'Malley for taking the time to make these videos. So good of you to include the kids in life lessons. I like to declutter, clean and organize but DO NOT want to be a minimalist. I just want to straighten out all the things I have and want in my own time and space. If I didn't want my processions I would not have taken the time and money to purchase them. I am like you with the amount of clothing that I own. I haven't purchased any clothes in about a year. I am paying off my credit cards. I love fashion, now that I am retired I don't need the expense. Now I purchase furniture, and I am almost done with that task. Great video!

Michelle , I am a retired senior now so I don't have the amount of clothes I once had. I have always had to swap out for the summer and winter seasons, so I use the idea that if I have not worn something in the last 6 months I donate it when I do the swap out. That way it is not there the next swap time and if I need I can replace it with more current stuff. You did a great job!!!
My fav video style so far. I can watch then listen and keep going. Much better than just playing music. I do enjoy as you explain what you are doing step by step, then I can get my butt up and follow.
Loved the video. Organization and decluttering are so satisfying. I use rolled up magazines in my boots! I love to Declutter and am going crazy right now because we’re in a busy season of life and I don’t have time. I’m a teacher so I will hit it hard this summer.
It is hard for me to decluttering my clothes. I am great at decluttering everything else in the house. I think it’s because I grew up not having a lot. I was the youngest of three girls so I worn a lot of hand me downs. Once I became an adult with a job and my own money I finally was able to have the clothes I wanted. I love purses. When I worked I changed my purse to match with my outfit daily. I have mastered decluttering my purses. I invited my girlfriends over for a give a way. I still donated three trash bags full of purses. I now have two trash bags full of dress shoes to donate. After watching today I going to start on my clothing. Great motivation today. Thank you for the kick in the booty to restart my decluttering task. Your closet looks awesome 👍🏻🥰❤️
It’s easy to get a lot purses! Clothes were hard for me to declutter too! I tend to hang on to them but it was time to let go! Good luck on your project! If I can do it so can you!

I used to have a hard time with decluttering as I am definitely a maximalist like you. I am also very sentimental so it's difficult to get rid of things. I love shopping, especially thrift shopping. Shoes are also my weakness, I once counted them all up and had over 120 pairs including like flip flops, slippers, etc. This year, I've gotten better at decluttering because I realized that half the clothing I was holding on to so I could wear them when I lost weight, I didn't like the items as much as I did when I bought them.

I have been decluttering for 10 years. It has to be kept up and sometimes I feel like what's the use, but it's nice to know where things are. I'm not a minimalist, I just try to keep things at a reasonable level.
I have been working on my closet all day mostly shoes and filled up two rooms to get stuff off my bed to sleep tonight because i have to work tomorrow, I start a job wearing uniforms on the 18th and have been so sad because I have so many clothes, I have a way smaller closet than you do and I am going to be 58 and shop when I am sad, happy I live 1500 miles away from my grown kids and grandkids, and feel I am have a shopping addiction this is the not the first time I have swore I would never let things get this bad. Wish I had a bigger closet. I love thrift shopping. Your children are great helpers and you did a great job tomorrow after work I will be working on more of my closet.

i've been a minimalist for 10+ years now only because the rest of my family are hoarders. I have a twin sister who is a smalll hoarder too but shell never admit it XD for me, I dont do it because it's fashionable. I get anxiety if i have too much of something. even food so i dont cook at home because the amount of storage that would take up is too much. If something isn't useful, i get rid of it. i donate or recycle. I do not have kids, but i've always tried to give kids a better world to live in, i've always put the well being of children above my own laziness. (plus animal shelters NEEEEEED bedding and towels) i also do swedish death cleaning two to 3 times a year :D ps. your daughter is adorable. her hanging out in the bag for a hot minute reminded me of my niece who just spent hours laying in a box because children in the toddler stage are basically just vocal cats.
I'm about to turn 20 and had very low confidence as a teen and just wore stuff I didn't really like for way too long. So the last two years as I got more comfortable with my body I really started decluttering my wardrobe every month or so. I'm not adding pretty much any clothes, just parting with few pieces at a time. Also I found out I'm not a person who needs much and is ok with having less but more timeless and better quality pieces I can mix together.
WOW! It's looking AMAZING! 😮If you turn the hangers backwards and hang them right when you wore something, you can see, what you have been wearing in let's say a year and it's easy to declutter the rest without much thought. 😉
I have a bad relationship with decluttering. I also say I will wear this and never do, but I am getting rid of things now that I’m older. You did a great job decluttering proud of you.
My daughter has tons of the same jammies as yours 😂 We must have very similar personal taste! I see a few baby Gap, Hanna Anderson, and minnie mouse ones we have. Also, I have that same "horrible carpet" in exactly the same color. We just ripped it out of our master suite, replaced it with Lifeproof LVP, it's glorious. We still have it in my kids rooms, hallway, and stairs- I can't wait to change it! It's truly awful quality shag. I just found your channel. Thanks for the motivation to finally let go of some things a knew deep down I wouldn't wear again. I never realized those "occasion" pieces I literally just buy something new for every time. I just did it last night. I found a new dress to wear for me and my husband's anniversary dinner. The occasion dresses don't usually get reused for another occasion 🙈

What i learned in these kind of vids is that minimalism is also being sustainable, functional and mindful of your purchases. Its like letting go of ur anxieties while having organized mind and safe place.
I am like you with the amount of clothing that I own. I haven't purchased any clothes in about a year. I am paying off my credit cards. I love fashion, now that I am retired I don't need the expense. Now I purchase furniture, and I am almost done with that task. Great video!

Michelle , I am a retired senior now so I don't have the amount of clothes I once had. I have always had to swap out for the summer and winter seasons, so I use the idea that if I have not worn something in the last 6 months I donate it when I do the swap out. That way it is not there the next swap time and if I need I can replace it with more current stuff. You did a great job!!!

It is hard for me to decluttering my clothes. I am great at decluttering everything else in the house. I think it’s because I grew up not having a lot. I was the youngest of three girls so I worn a lot of hand me downs. Once I became an adult with a job and my own money I finally was able to have the clothes I wanted. I love purses. When I worked I changed my purse to match with my outfit daily. I have mastered decluttering my purses. I invited my girlfriends over for a give a way. I still donated three trash bags full of purses. I now have two trash bags full of dress shoes to donate. After watching today I going to start on my clothing. Great motivation today. Thank you for the kick in the booty to restart my decluttering task. Your closet looks awesome 👍🏻🥰❤️
It’s easy to get a lot purses! Clothes were hard for me to declutter too! I tend to hang on to them but it was time to let go! Good luck on your project! If I can do it so can you!

I used to have a hard time with decluttering as I am definitely a maximalist like you. I am also very sentimental so it's difficult to get rid of things. I love shopping, especially thrift shopping. Shoes are also my weakness, I once counted them all up and had over 120 pairs including like flip flops, slippers, etc.
This year, I've gotten better at decluttering because I realized that half the clothing I was holding on to so I could wear them when I lost weight, I didn't like the items as much as I did when I bought them.

I have been decluttering for 10 years. It has to be kept up and sometimes I feel like what's the use, but it's nice to know where things are. I'm not a minimalist, I just try to keep things at a reasonable level.
I have been working on my closet all day mostly shoes and filled up two rooms to get stuff off my bed to sleep tonight because i have to work tomorrow, I start a job wearing uniforms on the 18th and have been so sad because I have so many clothes, I have a way smaller closet than you do and I am going to be 58 and shop when I am sad, happy I live 1500 miles away from my grown kids and grandkids, and feel I am have a shopping addiction this is the not the first time I have swore I would never let things get this bad. Wish I had a bigger closet. I love thrift shopping. Your children are great helpers and you did a great job tomorrow after work I will be working on more of my closet.

i've been a minimalist for 10+ years now only because the rest of my family are hoarders. I have a twin sister who is a smalll hoarder too but shell never admit it XD for me, I dont do it because it's fashionable. I get anxiety if i have too much of something. even food so i dont cook at home because the amount of storage that would take up is too much. If something isn't useful, i get rid of it. i donate or recycle. I do not have kids, but i've always tried to give kids a better world to live in, i've always put the well being of children above my own laziness. (plus animal shelters NEEEEEED bedding and towels)
i also do swedish death cleaning two to 3 times a year :D
ps. your daughter is adorable. her hanging out in the bag for a hot minute reminded me of my niece who just spent hours laying in a box because children in the toddler stage are basically just vocal cats.
I’m a Virgo so decluttering is in my nature lol. I’m kind of more towards a minimalist. Works best for me because I hate clutter!

I'm about to turn 20 and had very low confidence as a teen and just wore stuff I didn't really like for way too long. So the last two years as I got more comfortable with my body I really started decluttering my wardrobe every month or so. I'm not adding pretty much any clothes, just parting with few pieces at a time. Also I found out I'm not a person who needs much and is ok with having less but more timeless and better quality pieces I can mix together.

WOW! It's looking AMAZING! 😮If you turn the hangers backwards and hang them right when you wore something, you can see, what you have been wearing in let's say a year and it's easy to declutter the rest without much thought. 😉
I have a bad relationship with decluttering. I also say I will wear this and never do, but I am getting rid of things now that I’m older. You did a great job decluttering proud of you.

My daughter has tons of the same jammies as yours 😂 We must have very similar personal taste! I see a few baby Gap, Hanna Anderson, and minnie mouse ones we have.
Also, I have that same "horrible carpet" in exactly the same color. We just ripped it out of our master suite, replaced it with Lifeproof LVP, it's glorious. We still have it in my kids rooms, hallway, and stairs- I can't wait to change it! It's truly awful quality shag. I just found your channel. Thanks for the motivation to finally let go of some things a knew deep down I wouldn't wear again. I never realized those "occasion" pieces I literally just buy something new for every time. I just did it last night. I found a new dress to wear for me and my husband's anniversary dinner. The occasion dresses don't usually get reused for another occasion 🙈
