I have heard that sales of the 1957 Mercury began softening during the summer of '57, and this was an effort to unload the stocks in dealers' lots!
I miss the days of customizing your order for a car, usually took four to six weeks after order was excepted at manufacture, in my case it was Oldsmobile and Pontiac.
I like to ORDER cars from the factory ... I've ordered 4 in my lifetime ~~
