Mary sent me.. She is just the sweetest person.. Great info.. I wish we could get most of those meds but they are banned in Canada.. Solid advice.. I use PP or Salt... Sometimes I can get methalien blue through back channels
Most of these meds will most likely be going away in the U.S. soon. I try to rely on salt as much as possible but I am working with some natural products at the moment. One is very promising but I am not ready to announce it until I have more proof. It should be available world wide but I'm not sure about that. Mary is awesome!
This was a tough video to make. I had 2 hours of video and cut it down to 20 minutes which is too long for TH-cam. This video will do poorly short term but will hopefully help people long term and I knew that before making it. My reason for doing these videos is to help struggling aquarist because I was one when I started. I will do more detailed medication videos in the future on each medication. This was a wide overview. Thank you, S.Heller
Thank you so much for this video and all the others. They have been extremely beneficial...this is one I'll keep in my saved list to reference if (when) needed. I saw you had some Sahyadria denisonii in your video. Do you breed them? I also enjoy reading nerdy journal articles and have been reading a lot from India on them and how they are bred. Want to give it a shot, but was hoping to find someone else that has experience. Thanks in advance for your time.
Your welcome, As far as the denisonii someone local saw the video and offered me some pretty insane money for the group, I was planning to try and breed them but money talks. I know they take a long time to become gravid so time is the biggest obstacle. They have not been bred in captivity that often. Here's how I would of attempted it but understand just best guess on my part. 80-82 degrees, heavy plants, lots of rock piles, fast moving water in a 6 foot (minimum) tank. Feed excellent foods. Here's the thing with most barbs is you have to watch for breeding behaviors and pull the parents when it happens, early morning or late evening. So very labor intensive. I had a breeder tell me that they spawn November through March and he had spawned them but got very few fry, they are definitely a more challenging fish to spawn and their habitat is under pressure. Hope this helps!
@@shelleraquatics Thanks, Steve. Really appreciate the information. I have a mature group of 7 that I will hopefully figure out. Seems like at least a few folks in the states have it figured out as I’m seeing a lot for sale. Have a great weekend!
That depends on any major issues. But usually I do not, one or the other. If you do both, do not feed meds every day. Example: water/meds every day for 10 days and food/meds day 1,5,10
It's hard because there are different percentages of potency. As low as 10% and as high as 100%. I use Select aquatics levamasol. He recommends 1/4 teaspoon treats 100 gallons. I buy mine from Select aquatics, Greg Sage has tested it extensively and I trust his dosage. Steve Heller
You don't start trying heat treatment with salt on Discus fish, before you tried medical treatment ? Not tried it myself, but heard a lot have success. Because Discus can stay in pretty warm water.
Actually I do Salt and heat together first, very effective in many situations. Discus can handle salt up to 1 tablespoon per gallon but prefer 1:3 as my go to. Steve Heller
Im starting my first discus tank soon. Thank you for sharing your hard earned wisdom. Its good to be standing on the shoulders of giants
You can do it! I'm here to help

Thank you.

It's coming!🐠🙂
Turn tank lights off during the whole 10 day metro treatment?
Metronidazole is only active for 8 hours, so I usually treat at night before bed but if treated during the day I just make sure lights are dimmed
@@shelleraquatics and do you do 10 day treatment for entire tank as well as mixed with their food?
That depends on any major issues. But usually I do not, one or the other. If you do both, do not feed meds every day. Example: water/meds every day for 10 days and food/meds day 1,5,10
@@shelleraquatics thank you so much
Anytime 😊
Sea Salt measurement: 1 tablespoon per 3 gallons. If not improving: 1 tablespoon per 1-2 gallons
Yes, I've gone 1-1 with no issues
Great video! Where do you get potassium permanganate?
Online. Remember a little goes a long way
Do you keep aquarium salt in your discus tank permanently or just for treatment in quarantine?
Just when fish arrive to calm them but also for bacterial and fungal infections. It is an amazing tool for fish keeping.

@@shelleraquatics in your QT tank or display tank?
Always in my QT.
One of discus not eating. Its been 3 days . No symptoms. Advise pls
Heat and Salt or erythromycin, eliminate bacterial and fungal for 3 days
