Video was nicely done but an alternative approach is to carry a small bottle of household bleach and add 1/8 teaspoon of it for every gallon of freshwater being added to the RV. That is all that is needed to disable the bacteria in the water. It is only when sanitizing after there is a large quantity of bacteria in the freshwater tank, in particular the hot water tank where one has a sulphur smell like rotten eggs from the water coming out of the faucet.
Guys super pedestrian question - How did you sanitize the filter area if there is still potential contaminated water in there? Super helpful, we just bought our first rig a Coachmen Orion and we are excited to get out there
Doug, great question! After we take out the filter itself (and throw it away), you screw back closed the filter housing. It will fill up with the bleach-water solution just like the rest of the water lines and taps. Thanks for watching! 👍 -Howard
That is a great question, Adrian. There are definitely mixed opinions on filling all the way if you do a search online, but I feel more comfortable saying yes since it would also sanitize the walls of the tank. But if you fill before driving around for a while, it should slosh around enough to also treat the walls, right? Not sure there is a perfect answer... -Howard
We’re looking at that model to buy and that’s a easy one to do. My old travel trailer was a bit more work to get to the winterization valves. Nice job 👍🏼
Nice video. I have a 17J. No trips for us this year. We are staying put in our home state of CT till the 2021 season (we are not full time) in our sticks and bricks. Sigh.
Hahahaha, oh I realized that AFTER I did it. Most people (including us) still use the tap water in Mexico to wash dishes, brush teeth, even shower. Just not for drinking. In 5 months we didn't have any problems using it like this, but I wish I hadn't wasted such a nice water filter! -Howard

Very informative. I have a Winnebago 24V and I want to sanitize my tanks but have been hesitant. I am curious if I have a hot water tank by-pass that is that easily accessible. Love your videos.

Check the FEMA advice for dealing with bacteria in drinking water for more details.

Do you have to fill your fresh water tank all the way up? I have a hundred gallon fresh water tank. That is a lot of bleach and water.

HAHAHA, busted! You have good eye... I don't think we've every even used it for that! LOL. It's now an 'outside' measuring cup for tasks like this. 😂
