  • Emerson, Lake & Palmer perform "Welcome Back My Friends" live in Montreal in 1977. This footage is from the "Works: Orchestral Tour". Shot on August 26, 1977 at Montreal's famed Olympic Stadium.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer, also known as ELP, are a sporadically active English progressive rock supergroup. They found success in the 1970s and have sold over forty million albums and headlined large stadium concerts. The band consists of Keith Emerson (keyboards), Greg Lake (bass guitar, vocals, guitar) and Carl Palmer (drums, percussion). They are one of the most popular and commercially successful progressive rock bands.

First and foremost, the music is fantastic. But I feel compelled to comment on Greg Lake's physical presence. So masculine, so magnetic; simply a beautiful looking and sounding man.

Having already been a huge ELP fan as a kid in the 70’s, when I got this album as a Christmas gift it “blew my head apart”. No one saw me for the rest of that day. Hearing it now for the umpteenth time, it still reminds me of that day.

September, 1977, Little Rock, Arkansas, Works Volume I tour. They started the show with this, played about an hour, intermission, and then came back one at a time and did the complete double album. Then 2 encores. The best concert I ever attended, out of a couple of hundred. Springsteen in OKC, and Steve Miller and Fleetwood Mac at the Cotton Bowl came close.

I saw them at the Palace theater in Albany, NY in the later 90's. They were still fantastic and the most humble, sweetest band I've ever encountered ( and I've been to alot of shows) they actually came outside and signed albums, hugged fans... Just truly gracious. I still remember Greg Lake shouting " anyone got a shaaapie?" In his accent. A sharpie was quickly produced. Great great memory!

humble and nice. Or British, in other words! Lived in London 77 to 83 with a musician and 99% of all the other musicians where nice and humble. Lemmy, from Motörhead f.i., was the nicest, standing in a bar at the one armed bandits and buying drinks for anyone who approached him. Just one person, Brian Robertson, a guitarist, had the "don't you know who I am" attitude.

I really wish Emerson Lake and Palmer would get a Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame induction, but you might not know it, a lot of people just weren't too crazy about the group. Shame too, because From The Beginning is one of their best singles. Hopefully they'll see induction before Carl Palmer dies.
I actually own Emerson Lake And Palmer, Trilogy, Works Volume 1, Works Volume 2, and Love Beach.
In fact, I've been playing more guitar since Greg Lake died.

This is one group I really regret not seeing in concert...what a powerhouse, with only three members. If I could go back in time, these guys would be the one, never mind Zeppelin or the Stones, but since I was a tad young at the time (15), my parents weren't about to take me to a rock concert.

    • @petergeorgemusic

I was fortunate enough to see ELP twice in smaller live concert theaters in the early 70s in my late teens and early 20’s at The Asbury Park Convention Hall in Jersey and the Orpheum Theater in Boston while studying as a piano major at Berklee College of Music…Emerson blew my mind with his virtuosity and over the top flamboyance as a theatrical performer…and both Lake & Palmer were both equally impressive…all performing the most technically complex classical & jazz influenced Rock music ever created with such ease…This inspired me to study & practice intensely developing a level of proficiency that served me for over 50 years as a professional performing keyboardist & vocalist…the level of musicianship in popular music in the 21st Century is pathetic in comparison and the level of creativity is no where near as close to what it was in the 60’s, 70’s and to some extent in the 80’s ….like most everything else in America and the Western World in general except for the creation of technological advancement, Humanity has become fat, lazy and steeped in moral decay…and our obsession and dependence on digital technology is at the root of it all…its very sad to see the mess my generation has made of it all and left to our children & grand children
      God Help Us 🙏🏻

guaranteed to blow your head apart
    Rest a__ured you'll get your money's worth
The greatest show it happens a hell-of-alot.
    (Chorus)
You've got to see the show, it's a dynamo.
You've got to see the show, it's rock and roll
    Right before your eyes,
We'll pull laughter from the skies
And he laughs until he cries,
then he dies, then he dies
    (repeat Chorus)
    (Extended instrumental, mostly keyboard)
    Soon the Gypsy Queen
    in a glaze of Vaseline
    Will perform on guillotine
What a scene! What a scene!
    Next upon the stand
will you please extend a hand

Roll up! Roll up! Roll up!
    See the show!
    Performing on a stool

I only got to see them once but it was absolutely unforgettable. They featured a couple songs from Works, Vol. 1. It was an amazing amount of sound from three musicians.
