Former Farmer lifetime Gardener restoring fallow or never broken land to exciting bountiful growth. Last year was given a half bag of fertilizer granules, so salted the garden. How can it hurt? This year nothing came up! A wonderful crop of weeds and wildflowers. Soil hard caked and no life in it, in one year.
Now will have to mulch for another year and buy worms. Yes you can keep fertilizing, then have to start irrigating. The maize gets small and flinty. More irrigation. Then one year, it's nothing but silage for cattle, birds gone, pests in boils, weeds rampant, soil as hard as sandstone.
Rotating livestock, grains, crops, pulses, then livestock again is good.
