    Why don't you like it? That root system looks like a hand griping the soil very firmly - make that a spooky feature of this tree.

    So glad you chopped those lower branches! You have shown a too little ficus on your channel before. In that video you also mentioned that you did not like this variety. At least your consistent!

    Thanks Nigel, really enjoyed this one! totally agree with your decision to remove those low side branches, looks much better without them. Look forward to seeing this in another 20 years!!

    They are my favorite, precisely for what you listed as negatives, thinner trunk, strong roots, little leaves. It's one of the few species that actually looks harmonious, the rest just look like overweight people

    High Nigel. Great Video, great tree!
    Question: can you do a video on sharping your Tools?

  • @zebulundocallas
    @zebulundocallas 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Its good you removed that vertical low branch. Because that is the reason why one side of the root system is dominant. It has to feed that branch.

    It’s satisfying to watch the ugly parts cut off. I hated the roots when you started, and wondered why you don’t air layer it. But as I watched, the roots started to be a feature. I hope you video the repotting.

    This tree seems to have turned a corner for the better today. Maybe your ‘ugly’ trees are cause to exercise your skills to the fullest. ~ Bonsai artistry and sculpting both involve removing the unwanted until the desired image is attained. A refined aesthetic always includes simplicity of line and form . A lack of clutter.

    Wise choice on cutting off the lower branches. The trunk and even roots are very appealing to me but I must say that I personally don't like the foliage on that sort of ficus. Not sure why, it may have to be that the leaves are somewhat curled...? Keep them vidoes coming, we love it!

    Consider crafting a cutting from this tree on a young Ficus benjamina or an other species. Like on fruit trees: take the best from each one. Good root triads from this and a good crown from that...

  • @betulaobscura

    Thanks for another interesting video!
    Actually I like "beyond control" root systems. Especially in tropical plants. It gives some chaotic feeling which is more true to jungle spirit, it is more spontaneous, more free, more surprising.
    I like more "unorthodox" approach to the bonsai because I don't want to create another "typical" look of bonsai tree.
    Nice pruning! Tree looks much better now!

  • @iristio927

    Loved the video and the life lesson, which you can apply to almost everything, including a problem child that turns into a wonderful adult!
    Anyway, someone else mentioned this and I want to second it: could you please take a video of how you sharpen the tools, especially knob and branch cutters? Thx. Cheers!

    I will never understand why Nigel picks each dead leaf off one by one. Just grab em man! or blow them off with your lungs in like one second. Haha I get the patience zen aspect.. but still.

    Mine died (first ever ficus) but the ficus neriifolia/ salicifolia i saw and got the other day renewed my hopes in ficus'. I have a good feeling that neriifolia is the right one to teach me the basic wants of a ficus species. I have the feeling that this tree will thrive for me! It looks super happy other than dropping 4 leaves.

  • @RonMaurer

    Looking good! As always, really enjoy my morning ☕️ watching but wishing there was a “BonsaiCam” which would give an artist view as if we were sitting in your chair. Like a GoPro head mounted camera? Have a great day!!

    • @RonMaurer
      @RonMaurer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, the root base is a bit of a reflection of the spiders 🕷 living in the canopy. Maybe this is your “spider Ficus”?

  • @lukasmihara

    He Nigel, nice vedio and a good looking specimen. I love your bonsais. I am from India and these trees love sunny and humid climate. I have some of them and they grow very well, sometimes 3-4 growth a season, but for that it need tropical climate. I would suggest you to make a tropical room for your tropical trees so they can get a feel of their native place. And good luck

    I am getting spoiled with these daily videos 🤣🤣 usually, ficus specialistis do a lot of grafting, mix and matching better foliage varieties with better root varieties... it is quite rare, nowadays, to see "pure" ficus, specially benjamina.
