  • After a severe root pruning this summer it's time to tackle the top of the tree!
    I'm trying to create the look of a giant tree from this small "Too Little Leaf" Ficus bonsai.

    My enjoyment, is following a few of what I consider, “The Bonsai Masters”, and you sir,

    I really enjoy all your videos…. and thank you sir for all the videos and your time.

    Hi Nigel, after seeing the original root-work video, I decided to investigate why my willow leaf was getting pushed up out of the pot. You gave my the confidence to do my own major root surgery. There was a horizontal potato root right below the trunk. I decided to plant it and just now have tiny leaves on a few 1/2 in stems growing from the cut point! Can’t believe it actually worked!

    Amazing how this tree made it through your last root pruning... all these potato roots that were there... this tree is going to be a good long term study on how to deal with very difficult material.

    Interesting analysis Nigel. I’m curious about two decisions you made. Bottom right you chose to eliminate all but one branch coming from the same spot, but bottom left you chose to leave two branches coming out of a stump. Any reason for the different approaches?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The place I left two branches has a short stump that they come out of, sort of a short mini branch.

    Hey Nigel what methods did you use to thicken the trunk on this tree?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just let it grow each year and then prune it back, repetition will slowly build up the trunk diameter.

    • @jaybolinger2865
      @jaybolinger2865 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds simple enough. I have one more question sensai. I know that this particular species of tree likes to be root bound. Would there be any adverse effects if I put it in a pot that is slightly bigger than the root mass? I have read that it is a method to thicken the trunk. What are your thoughts on that? Thanks for doing what you do Nigel. You have spread valuable knowledge to a great deal of people around the world, and I am thankful to soak up some of that knowledge!
