    Well here in nsw Australia 31c is just warm. It often gets to 38c plus in summer and low humidity. Each to there own ahy

    • @danbooth908
      @danbooth908 ปีที่แล้ว

      31° in ontario would likely have a feels like temp of just under 40. The humidity in the summer is insane. Last year we were regularly hitting above 40 for our "feels like" temp or humidex.

    Hey Nigel! I’m taking a two and a half to three day trip this summer. Do you think some microcarpas and a religiousa would be fine if I defoliate right before and put in the shade for that period without water? My other option would be bringing them indoors to get the wind away from the pots. These are three inch deep pots, about 25% organic soil.

    • @dkstott29
      @dkstott29 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's a lot of variables to consider. How much do the roots occupy the pot, is it root bound? What's your current watering schedule? I've personally never had a ficus complain about going 2-3 days without watering. If it were my tree, I'd water it heavily before leaving. I'd move it out of direct sun and protect it from wind. You could put it on a drip tray filled with gravel and soak the gravel to add humidity.

    • @bibnida7945
      @bibnida7945 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dkstott29 Yes, I'll add he can cover the top of the soil (aluminum foil, a towel etc) to keep the moisture in the soil longer.

    • @jamesn7156
      @jamesn7156 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Looks great in that new pot! I wish I could use Bonsai soil, it's pricey. I did try a mix at one point, but the trees dried too fast and the mix went mushy. I think it was the vermiculite. I'm looking for ingredients to mix, but this area is limited. Calcined clay is near impossible to find. Safe T zorb is only found at Walmart, you have to order in and it's $100 for a 40lb bag. Hence why no one uses it in a shop LOL I looked at cat litters. I haven't found one. I'm waiting to get more Perlite. None available in my area, it's on back order everywhere. Highway 17 closed due to fires doesn't help. I've been using sand/gravel. I'm going to get a small pea gravel or sift the crusher fines for the rock chips. The sharp rock chips should work like Akadama. I need something that doesn't dry so fast in the house in winter. I need redneck alternatives! Hahaha!!

      What about pumice or lava rock from a stone yard or garden center?
      I'm in zone 10b with very little rainfall, so I have to use mostly organic compost to keep trees from drying and dieing.

    • @FrostBiteBonsai
      @FrostBiteBonsai ปีที่แล้ว

      @Danté T. Edwards I will have to look and see if that is available here. Hopefully not too expensive. Vermiculite is $34 for an 8L bag. 790g or 1.7lbs. Perlite is $11 for the same size bag. It's just not available in my area. I will check again tomorrow if the orders arrived, in the city. I used to get lava rock for aquarium use, but it became very expensive. I never thought to look in the garden centers for it! Thank you! I know they have crushed brick mulch. That might work too! I've never seen pumice available except the beauty section to scrub your feet...🤣🤣

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I find a porous soil particle will fill up with minerals from the water and fertilizer. They loose that absorbency that fresh soil has. It may be a slight coating of algae and moss that also affects the older soil on the surface. I know my Ficus love new soil, they always put on a big growth spurt.

    • @emy1111
      @emy1111 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheBonsaiZone I don't know Nige, we'd have to get the microscope out on that one... I use fresh soil on my more developed trees, but always have plenty of use for the recycled stuff too like seeds cuttings or larger projects.
