Cats - What Went Wrong?

  • Have you heard about the movie Cats? Have you? Here's a cursory overview of the many production failings that resulted in one of the most unfinished big budget films in recent years, employing advanced 'digital fur technology' (too little time, too little experience, a VFX client with no understanding of the technology and no desire to learn) to bring Tom Hooper's vague daydreams into your nightmares. The Waste Land it ain't.
    Cats is a film that might even be worth watching. But only when drunk. And with friends. And only once. And while doing something else. In another room. Vomits.

    In Lovecraftian Lore there is a play called "The King in Yellow" the play directly connects all those acting it and viewing it to the Old One Hastur. No showing of this play has ever been completed with the sanity of the audience or the actors in it intact.

      I know this is Lovecraft we're talking about, but what are the logistics of this play? How did they get through a table read? What were rehearsals like? Were the understudies told of this? What about closed and open dress rehearsals? I can get behind unfathomable, unimaginable evil, but I need answers for these questions dammit!

      @@Enevan1968 I have it by my bedside right now - isn't it the case that both are true? It was written by Chambers, but it does exist as a part of the Lovecraft mythos, as many people have contributed to it over the years (Clarke Ashton Smith, for example)

    • @ButtersTheGreat1
      @ButtersTheGreat1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      @@staidenofanarchy The King in Yellow is not written by Lovecraft and Hastur is the most famous creatures not created by Lovecraft. But in my opinion The King in Yellow is an amazing read if you love cosmic horror. However, for a quick answer...
      Hastur's influence spreads like a virus, hearing his name or seeing his sign will spread his influence and control. He seems to prefer to target creative types, so figures rehearsing and performing the play are now already under his influence. And they have an obsessive need to show others the Yellow Sign or spread Hasturs name. For them, what better way then an act of art?
      Edit: wrote this in a rush and made it sound like Hastur was added into the mythos later. He was not. He was created by Ambrose, first made into a more Cosmic Horror story by Chambers, name dropped by Lovecraft, then made into a full fledged old one by Derleth.
      Didnt mean it to come off like that

    I saw this film in theatres with a friend.
    It felt, like, five hours long, and at the end of this monstrosity, all we could do was laugh. Not because it was funny. No, we laughed much like a Lovecraft character laughs when exposed to an eldritch truth too terrible to comprehend; out of despair and madness.

    • @timetochronicle
      @timetochronicle 4 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      I've been wondering that too. The stage production of Cats worked for YEARS with just stylised cat costumes and the limitations of effects and props for the stage. With a limited budget and an emphasis on good directing and cinematography, Cats could have been a great musical, instead of what we got.
      Then again, Ryan George put it best - perhaps this was also one of those instances where the stage production should have stayed in the theatre and not be made into a movie. (and we already had a Cats "movie" to begin with, that being the 90s filming of a stage production)

Stage dancers/singers having a good time and hamming it up to be catlike and adding funny additions in the background of any given song. From what I understand part of the problem both in that movie and Cats is the actors/actresses were allowed to set the tempo of the songs with the orchestra having to work around that with the already written music. The fact that most of the actors/actresses aren't professional vocalists doesn't help either since they need coaches (and to listen to the coaches).

    I just watched it last week at a friends house, it was alright, I enjoyed it, but it made no sense, not visually, stylistically, nor conceptually, it is entertaining, but in a really weird way.
    Things that bugged me: they’re cats, but they aren’t cat sized, and their size varies, and some wear clothes. They dance, but it’s rotoscoped CGI, so it’s not impressive because it’s not real. They sing, but you can’t hear the words, but the words are the story, but the story doesn’t make any sense, and some of them can’t sing or dance.
    But if you ever get a chance, see it, it’s… oddly fascinating… in a turkey in a car crash kinda way.

      I know! You can easily do the fur as as a practical effect, so why bother with CGI? Or if you're determined to go with CGI, have the actors wear full motion capture suits, and give the computer animators the time they needed to do it right.
      I agree with GRS; this movie was designed to be a cash grab, a sure thing with a built-in audience. Nobody in charge really cared about the project for its own sake; they just saw an acclaimed musical, and thought they could do it better and bigger, and cover themselves in reflected glory. It was lazy and cynical, and it justifiably failed.

    One reason why musicals, particularly sung-through ones, tend to work better on stage than on screen is because of intermissions. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to watch CGI cats sing for two straight hours while staying engaged and taking it seriously the whole time.

    On my birthday every year since I was 16 (21 now), my grandparents let me choose from the Pantages Theater’s lineup, I put on a nice suit, and go watch a play. Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserable, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, and most recently Cats. The play is actually really good. I chose it out of morbid curiosity and went in blind. But it was pretty incredible.
    I won’t watch the movie, but from the clips and stills I’ve seen, it’s an affront to god lmao. It seems so passionless. So lifeless. Probably because there’s a difference between stage and film acting. I’m sure if they had the “right” actors and enough of the “right” people behind the scenes, it could’ve actually been good. Like how the guy who played LaFou in the live action Beauty and the Beast was the only trained and experienced stage actor, and imo, he gave the best performance. But I’m not a filmmaker. So I’m probably way off.

    I've never seen the play/musical, but from what I can gather, it is one of these "of its time" hype-fests (like Rent was apparently), but that was not actually good at all. A lot of these musicals seem to get by on the singing/dancing, or just general zeitgeist, when the plots are shallow. So when you transfer that to a medium like film, where you lose that intimate physicality (especially with CGI), then the shallowness comes pouring though. Some things are just not meant to be films.

      Both Rent, as an early-mid 90s based story and Cats, done in the early 80s are 100% products of their time. Both still have worthy things to say though. The movie tried too hard to be more than that.

      @@PixelatedH2O I hate musicals (except RHPS and Dr. Horrible's), but my wife loves them, so I hear about them all the time. We grew up in the 80s, young adults by the 90s, so Rent should have really connected with her, but I've never heard her shit on a musical like she does Rent. Her face still wrinkles up like someone farted every time it is mentioned. Everything she has told me about it does make it sound like a train wreck.

    5:50 you included a scene from the original CATS filmed in the Adelphi Theatre, which was a magical and great experience. That's unrelated to this modern edition. One of my favourite DVDs. That one was just dancers, incredibly fit and athletic, a joy to watch.

    Just think about how much money they could have saved (and Lovecraftian horror they could have avoided) by simply having attractive actors in sexy outfits wearing clip-on tails and ears.

    Hi. I am currently working my way through your vids, and I am really enjoying them. It would appear that you have almost stopped putting out such brilliant content. I hpe you have been offered a role presenting something because you have a great talent for presenting things. As well as a good and balanced approach to your videos. I don't always agree, just now I have bben watching the Predator video and I think that the ending of Predator 2 was inspired. The realisation that it had been around for years, and there were a lot, plus it had hunted a Xenomorph, was brilliant.
    Anyway I just wanted to wish you best wishes and I really enjoy your videos. Peace.

    So I finally decided to watch this movie since everyone is saying it is so bad. I figured it would be suicide squad bad and at least give a few decent scenes.
    It's worse than anything you can imagine. I literally had to force myself to continue watching it. It is insane that the studio actually released this film to theaters. This should have been shelved for 3 or 4 years then dumped on Quibi.

      At least Suicide Squad have some good moments here but it doesn't do any justice because WB butchered it. And look at what happened to Jared Leto after getting a lot of backlash for portraying the Joker wrong when the writers and the costume designers seemed to get away with the karma. Remember when Batman vs. Superman failed because of how confusing the plot was but the Ultimate cut really does make sense. I feel like the downfall for Synder is sad because of his daughter's death and people keep throwing some dirt on him while WB keeps laughing with their green piece of paper. Justice Leagues is an ultimate disaster to cinema and it's pretty laughable. Joss Whedon used to be great when he's working on Avengers (2012) but became more of a hypocrite because his work isn't that good (and yet WB hired him for an obvious reason). I'm glad that Synder Cut finally give him a redemption to fix the DCEU and it proves that WB shouldn't sabotaged the cinematic works.
      Cats 2019 was doomed from the start to finish when, while the plot was faithful to the musical, the designs doesn't do give anything to redeem itself because of how terrifying the designs are.

    The stage show is an ensemble with the whole cast on stage most of the time. Lots of great dance and harmony singing. Hooper got big stars for a few days and so they do a solo and get going. Thus is missed one if the charms of the live show.

    I have never seen the live production and I only caught a few bits of the movie, but it seemed to have a pretty obvious allusion to aspiring actors hoping to be discovered on Broadway. I didn't think it was really about "cats" at all, but that was a clever way to think about strays, like aspiring artists tend to be.
