I believe reading the linemen is easier at the high school level. Once the linemen is a yard past the line of scrimmage, its illegal man down field. Only have to read 2 lineman (the two you read is based on your alignment for the play). You'll never be fooled
astroworld if the lineman move forward then it’s run blocking meaning they r running the ball. If the lineman stands straight up or backwards it’s pass blocking. As a safety for example I read the guards. If they pull or move forwards I know it’s a run. And if they pass block I know it’s a pass. It’s more effective if you read lineman because u can’t get fooled by the qbs play action.
Hey Joe quick question. First year coaching safeties and corners for me. I’m curious if I should run both positions through all the same drills since I’m solo on this. We are short on coaches. Coaching 10 and 11 years old.
Generational Freedoms Jeremy Pendergrass you should. my high school coaches puts all the skills together, linemen, and linebackers/running backs in their own groups
Would the "Ball UP/Ball DOWN" reads be appropriate for if the Safety is in Zone Coverage, Man Coverage, or Both? I think it would be difficult to do Ball Up/Ball Down if the $ is covering a Slot Receiver.
Key QB, if after the snap he brings the ball down to his waist (like a hand-off), that's ball down. If he brings the ball up to his chin, that's ball up (pass). So the key read is 1. safety sees ball down, be patient and make sure the ball stays down - be sure it's not play action. Don't go til you know. The 'bounce' is just a coaching point to help him stay patient. Ball down, stays down = run. Go to your run fit (force or alley usually) 2. ball up = pass, immediately go to your pass responsibility. Could be a draw, but safeties aren't responsible for draw. 3. ball down, ball up = play action. Brings the ball down for run fake, safety bounce reads, QB brings the ball up to his chin to throw. Go to your pass responsibility. RPOs work the same way. Nutshell. Hardest read is the play action, so we try to get a scout QB to mimic the play action we see on film that week as best we can. Safeties need to study QB play action on film to get the best read, so coaches should make a playlist of it for them if you're using hudl.
Joe Daniel Football can you make a video or not sure if you already have one on how to read wide receivers at the line like what gives them away that they are getting the ball if that makes sense.
Nice job, I just got an assistant coaching jobs your podcast and videos are very informative!
Great concept and super simple, I like it.

@@jackorubin1818what about a draw play or a middle screen? Also with all the RPO’s, they miss illegal man downfield all the time.

I am a smaller size safety and it is harder to see over the line to the QB is there anything that can help with this
read the linemen
Get taller

I would think loosen up your alignment would help your vision. You might be playing too tight.
Ok can anyone explain the ball up ball down bounce again in a nutshell unless I gotta find your older podcast
