    I used to be a commercial grower. It would help if you take off the leaves below the first truss of flowers. That where most of the eggs are. That will to bring down the population. Keep doing the spray regime. Take off the older leaves as the plant grow. It will also help to produce bigger fruits.

    Also remember to spray the soil around the plants as well. The fly eggs can fall from the leaf to the soil below where they hatch. The larvae feed on soil material until they develop into adult flies.

    I love the idea of using petroleum jelly. I bought yellow sticky traps once and found that not only do you catch the bugs, but I had a sparrow with his wing stuck on these traps. They are way to dangerous to have in a garden. There is absolutely to 'give' to this sticky stuff. Banned from my garden ever since. (By the way - managed ever so gently to remove the bird's wing. Hope he made it after all...)

      I took a fire log, wrapped it in yellow duct tape, then covered that with inverted (sticky side out) packing tape. Every few days I spay that with Pam to refresh the stickiness.

    I would get ladybug larvae/nymphs instead of ladybugs. My kids and I gathered a bunch of nymphys (they called them alligators) and put them at the base of an aphic infected little tree and they crawled up the tree and devoured all the aphids in one night. Then they turned into ladybugs and did a second round of work in the garden.

    • @E6ROCK
      @E6ROCK 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Problem is, tomatoes are covered in small hairs, large enough to inconvenience ladybugs, so they don't do anything on the plants.

    I have to deal with them annually, I find that a strong spray with the hose to the underside of the leaves, early in the morning, a few times a week, usually takes care of 90% of the problem without using any chemicals. Those eggs on the back of the leaf can really stick though, give em good blast.

  • @alisontaylor4880

    They don't like shiny things. So the shiny side of the aluminum foil around the plants deters
    them, but of course won't kill them. Thanks for the tips!

    There is also a tiny wasp that goes after whiteflies. The city of Modesto, CA used it to control the ash whitefly population that was destroying the city's street trees.

    • @trinhzphotography350

      Whitefly Parasite: Encarsia formosa
      Encarsia formosa is a tiny (0.6mm) wasp that attacks only whiteflies. Adult female Encarsia kill whitefly scales in two ways: by puncturing and feeding on scales, or laying their eggs in scales (each female may produce 30-500 eggs during her lifespan). Encarsia eggs hatch into tiny larvae, which cause the whitefly pupae to turn black as the young wasps mature. At 70°F, a new adult wasp emerges about 21 days after the egg is laid. The parasites are shipped inside the blackened whitefly scales which are attached to cards in batches of 50-100 per card.

    HI Reaganite - I like your DIY recipe to get rid of these pests! Does the yellow mouthwash work the best, or can it be the blue kind? I have used Neem oil with some success as well, but you have to spray every 5 days, not every 6, because they multiply on the 6th day. I did this for about 2-3 weeks consistently and reduced their numbers dramatically. Thx for taking the time to share your ideas!

      Companion Planting helps a lot. But for Tomatoes, you want to plant them in the same place every year, they Love Home. When I plant tomatoes, I put a clove of garlic next to each plant and it eliminates the Red Spider Mite. Onions, Shallots and Celery in the "Tomato Bed" will keep a large portion of pests away from the Tomato's. This year so far, has been Horrible for Insects, but the Tomato's are looking GREAT!

The white lantana right next to the yellow in my parkway was untouched. Sounds like there is something to the whole yellow thing. I am going to try the petroleum method as trying to spray lantana when it's in bloom is very difficult.

    You have a hole in a corner and a piece of garden wire to fix it in place, just peel of the guard sheets and there you go.

    These are awesome tips! I’ve had a real problem with the white flies in my houseplants. I’ve had plants for years and this is the first time I am experiencing this menacing pests and trying everything to get rid of them including hydrogen peroxide and water....Dr. Bonner’s Castille soap, alcohol, tea tree and water...I give them showers almost every other day it seems. I’m going to try out the Vaseline on the glass frames with yellow paper inside the frames.

    • @Tiki71
      @Tiki71  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I still use cut up yellow poster board and Vaseline taped inside my indoor grow shelving. That and small little cups of apple cider vinegar. They land in it and never come out. ;)

    I’ve been told to use hydrogen peroxide 2 oz to a gallon of water. Spray all over the plant especially under the leaves. Kills the hordes flying around too. I still have some so I try your recipe tomorrow.

    I have never had the white flies. I dont know if they are down here in SE Texas.
    What I cant seem to easily get rid of is stink bugs and leaf footed stinkbugs. GRRR
    Thank for sharing the picture frame idea I have been searching for bright yellow Plexiglas so i can spread a product called tangle-foot on it... I am worried though that the bees will jump on the yellow and be killed =(

      I've observed bigger insects lighting on the Vaseline and being able to fly off. It seems to only get the really small whiteflies and hold them. So I like it for that ;)

      I wouldn't spray it on them, but once dry I wouldn't think so. Ladybugs don't eat on plants, they eat aphids.

    What setting do you set your hose in sprayer on?

  • @adrianfrost1947
    @adrianfrost1947 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I use paper sheets inside plastic sleeves, which is a really cheap method and the yellow shows on both sides. Hang it up using the holes, with the open edge taped up and pointing downwards to miss the rain or watering. The Vaseline can be wiped off when yukky and reapplied.

    How about a pump up sprayer? And covert your black light mosquito zapper, to have a yellow light. that way at night, the white fly moths, would be zapped to death, and feed the frogs!

    I could barely read the bottle you used - 70% isopropyl alcohol. Did your mouth wash have alcohol? Most of it now-a days has no alcohol so the listerine type must be for the strong odor, right? There are many types and strengths of alcohols at the drug store.
    Just trying to figure out your actual recipe. thanks

    I noticed these damn things last year. They were everywhere. I was like, what are these things? I got rid of the plants they were infesting. They were on my potato plants. I used a spray bottle and sprayed the hell out of the plant. This year I have neem oil, 100%. I am using this. I also saw a video where he recommended using Dr. Bonner's castile soap, it's organic. You use about a tablespoon and fill it up with water/spray bottle. Spray it on the plant. I really hated seeing these little bastards. I am going to use the yellow paper method as well.
