Love your channel Tony.. will the soap work with stopping moths and white butterfly’s laying the eggs? Because it’s destroying my veg still. I’ve got rid of the slugs following your slug video. But once the moth or Bfly eggs are hatching it’s wiping some of my veg out.
    Thanks

I was using Dawn at first and nothing was happening. I found your video and promptly purchased some castile soap. It appeared like nothing was happening, and I was about to purchase some neem oil, when I decided to look closer at my pepper plant. They were all dried up on the leaves/flowers so it definitely does work. Thank you very much for your wonderful video!

Neem oil smells wonderful _to me_ 😁
I use it weekly - 1 Tablespoon to 1 Gallon with about 1.5 Teaspoons of Castille liquid. My tip to anyone reading: spray EVERYTHING including surrounding weeds, volunteers and flower leaves... if you don't pests and diseases will cause enough problems in the surroundings to affect your "maintained" plants.

I've sometimes used Savon Noire, Black Soap for aphids on roses. I'm reluctant to use it very often as I don't know if it, or any of the other remedies you mention are harmful to the beneficial insects, such as the ladybirds and lacewings. Any thoughts on this aspect? I have noticed this year that there have been much greater numbers of greenfly from early season, but a corresponding high number of ladybird and their larvae. I'm hoping nature does the job for me.

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The neem would only affect the insects that eat the plant, ladybirds and lacewing lavae dont eat the plants only the aphids

1:47 water doesn't work but it can be a temp solution.
2.16 soap soln doesn't work either with dish soap
6:00 neem oil doesn't work either, i tried also mixing it with soal solution but that too did not work.
7:03 You are spraying it on the top side of the leaves.
the intelligence of these mites and other crawler is they take shelter on the underside of the leaves and slowly eat into the plan and leaves destroying them completely.

Perfect timing once again - I was just talking about neem oil on the last video and asking what people do with it - now I know! The plant invigorator stuff sounds interesting - might check that out. And I didn't know about not using washing up liquid - we tend to put a little oil into the mix as well to help it 'stick'. Great tips once again young Tony - and hold on - it looks like you've hit the 50,000 mark - WOOHOO!

Great video Tony!! There are two types of soaps, “detergents”, which encapsulate dirt/grime to remove it and “surfactants”, which break down cell walls. We want the latter to fight these little devils. Like you said Castile soap made from olive oil and lye solution is a great surfactant, all natural and possibly humanity’s greatest achievement…

I use ground up egg shell and diatomaceous earth. I wash dry and crush the egg shells and collect all winter to add in the spring. The sharp shards (not crushed to powder) keeps snails out and adds calcium as it beaks down. The DE is to keep ants away so my bare feet don’t get bit!

Hi Tony, I have a question, I am growing a squash called' Gem squash' in a pot, (I am growing them upright, as I have a very small back yard) the leaves are like pumpkin leaves. I have been using pink sun Neem oil and pink sun horticultural gentle liquid soap, you mix with water. My leaves are still going yellow (I suspect Downy mildew) according to findings on the internet. I also give liquid fertilizer 7-7-7 feed for vegetables and flowers about every two weeks.I live in the UK, but have you experienced this with you Squash, how do you treat it? Suggestions well appreciated. Have a great day

Thanks Tony! I always get value from your videos and learn something every time. There's a lot of Spanish moss in a pear tree that I've been trying to control by just picking it off but after hearing your clip am going to try some of the antifungal stuff which will help with the creepy-crawlies too. I use castille soap too and my dozen or so tomato plants are looking good as well as the veggies in a large raised bed, built on a large pallet about 3 and a half feet off the ground so the wild rabbits can't reach it, and corn salad(the veggie) growing rampant all over! It reseeded itself from last year so am enjoying it. Good topic; thanks!Grandma in WA state🙏👵🌱💞😊

Hello! Thank you for this channel, and all the time and effort you out into it 😄
I'm an absolute beginner to gardening but am determined to take it up.
I have had a real problem on my yellow zucchini with some sort of disease I guess? It's turned some of my leaves on the plant a white/brown filmy dead looking dry dead leaf. I have no idea what is wrong as I'm just starting and would be very grateful for any advice before I use one of these methods and it's not the right thing, before I do something wrong. Do I need to throw out the soil if my plant gets a disease?
Also if I use these methods like the soap and oil, what do I do when I want to eat it? Will the soap or oil have an impact on eating it? Or is there a special way to wash the plants??
    Thank you so much!

    How about molasses?
Is it ok to mix it with soap and then spray it on plants?
Aphids arrived in my garden and there is no neem oil around to buy.
If I order online it will take at least 2 weeks and by that time I'll have nice infestation.
What I've read is that Molasses is also good and it has potassium in it so it can feed the plants at the same time.
I've used it today so I can't tell you what the results are.
If anyone has any info on it please drop a comment I'd really appreciate it.

I managed to get neem oil. I found in organic food shop. I killed all the green nasties and plants finally continued to grow. Those affected were all closed up. Now its all ok and thx for the tip.

Very enjoyable. About five years ago I set up a plot in the back garden and the whole ploy apart from the potatos were decimated by catapilars. It was terrible this year I netted the plot off. The pak choi are still getting devowered by slugs but supose I cant have everything.

Another thumbs up for organic neem oil....had aphids on cucumbers and it wiped them out in a few days.I did just one drop of detergent to help it emulsify better. If it seems thick in the bottle, the temperature may be low so hold the bottle under a warm tap (it is also decent insect repellent for gardeners) 👍

@@simplifygardening Nah...the vast majority of people who claim to be experts on these types of topics are simply regurgitating what they have heard somewhere.
What REALL WORKS is Monterey insecticide. I drenched the hibiscus 5 days ago and have not seen ONE whitefly. I will follow up in about 10 days with Monterey and repot and change the soul in the pots this fall.
Neem oil is a total joke. My problem was not even very bad. Even spraying every day all summer with this "orange oil" did absolutely nothing.
