I checked a couple of cards (Desert Nomads and Stone-Throwing Devils), and it's pretty clear theres a HUGE demand back in '21 and the print to oblivion period (government printing money I mean, not WotC prointing cards). Now they've dropped down to levels that are STILL twice as much as they ever were before that time. It's very stark if you look on Goldfish how they leap up overnight. So don't blame WotC for reserve list cards normalising in price post-covid handouts.

These are the signs that magic is collapsing, not people speculating on the internet.
I bought almost all my Alpha/Beta from Troll or AnyCraze back in the 90s. I feel for these guys, but also realize that magic needs to die.
Commander is NOT magic, and it is almost all Wizards wants and it is what has destroyed the "player" side. Now that the "collector" side has collapsed, the burden has shifted to the player side and players have rejected wizards offerings.

    • @Mirthful_Midori

Commander is what WOTC supports because it organically became the largest format. Players chose to play commander over other formats and so WOTC made changes to profit from that shift. It wasn’t the other way around. If you don’t agree then it’s just you happen to fall in the minority of what formats are popular right now.
You all make these claims based on your own opinion and bias and have no data/stats to base any of these assertions on.
More than one card game can exists. Popularity will wain and wax.

Personally I think it's a balance 60 card format is fun ur building around a theme and some general counters in addition with 20 hp it's hard to get some bs rolling if u die while ur still setting up .

FNM used to be 5-6 (or more) teenagers going to the card shop, buying boosters and maybe splurging on Legends or Antiquities boosters to go with about $20 worth of lesser priced boosters, then going to a friend's house to play past midnight in group games. Casual group games were what really made MTG.
All the money and competition in MTG does not make for pure fun.
      It was organic.
No amount of effort by Wizards other than drowning will bring back MTG's glory days.

It just confirms Hasbro is strategically moving to eliminate LGS’s and the secondary market from a position where they might compete with Hasbro’s bottom line. It certainly explains WOTC’s inventory dump on Amazon and other partnerships with large big box retailers (and the rollout of MTG Arena). Hasbro doesn’t want anyone other than Hasbro itself to make money off Hasbro products. I wouldn’t be surprised if Hasbro is tied up in VC funds, and as soon as they’ve extracted all the value they can out of WotC, they’ll spin it off, leaving WotC with a mountain of debt and a brand in tatters.

i'd like to think WotC's downfall started when they introduced Mutate and Companion. It was one thing that they had "Bestow" but at least that was comprehensible. They need "money cards" for most every set that can't just be "reprints" and i'm still debating if Jeweled Lotus was one of those things some players chased after, some players quite MTG. The one ring is one thing, but Orcish Bowmasters and Thassa's Oracle are ruining the commander format while blue keeps getting more ways to embody "fun police" when players would rather play a different TCG because it's more fun.

Why should players pay these high prices for collector boxes etc to get valueless cards? I will wait awhile to buy the singles and or proxies I want. This is a key point, and I like using capenna for this comparison, a set that is objectively low value, but if your goal was just to accumulate the tri lands, as many as you could, it'd be very expensive. I see no reason why the market should allow others to get rares under 100 - 150 USD each. I say we make all card games premium products. If we let cards get to say, 20 per card we are just wasting our time. I agree with you 100%, price out players who aren't willing to invest.

Games are luxury items. MTG is a game, ergo prices do not need to be cheap. You also act like the majority of cards cost a fortune when that's just untrue. There are plenty of cheaper options that play just fine. Starter decks and jumpstart won't win tournaments, but if anyone wants to just jump right into tourneys then they should expect it to cost them.

The problem is you have a huge disconnect between those who play the game and those who use it as an investment. One side wants to keep the other side from winning. You have the investors who want every single card to cost 80+ dollars for a play set and then you have the other side that wants every card to be 0.25.

    • @mattjayce2339

    • @hubertcumberdale
      @hubertcumberdale ปีที่แล้ว +17

It's also a compounding problem where Wotc is still selling their product as a "premium" product, where there is little to no value unless you hit a chase card (that quickly loses its value to a reprint in months, not years.) the prices are set as if these are collector cards and they aren't anymore.
If they want cheap cards, the boxes have to be less expensive. If they want premium prices for boxes, they can't have everything be a cheap game piece. They want the best of both worlds and it's just not working.
All those wanting cheap game pieces aren't spending hundreds of dollars on collector boxes. Collectors aren't buying cause nothing is worth anything. It'll eventually hit a breaking point.

It's a lot of things. The card sets are thematic but utterly bankrupt in terms of doing anything interesting. They attempted to push the games limits through some of the sets like Ikoria and war of the spark. Heck, the two were different directions on pushing things (Use weird evolution mechanics and make planeswalkers mainstream). However, they kind of destroyed themselves by getting rid of block sets which forced them to have some rails on what they are doing each year.
It's like the cereal industry and selling sugary cereal to kids with vitamins in it to feint being healthy. It's super stimulating and might get some people into eating it just because it is sweet, but once someone gets used to the sweetness it just becomes as bland as oatmeal after a while. This is especially true when everyone also tries to be super over stimulating and throwing tons of sugar into their own foods.
