Firm linked to Michelle Mone's husband should face 'fraud probe' say experts | BBC News

  • The husband of ex-Tory peer Michelle Mone, Doug Barrowman, is connected to a company that tax experts say should be investigated for fraud, BBC Newsnight has found.
Doug Barrowman has previously denied involvement in Vanquish Options, a firm that falsely claimed customers could write off money owed to the government.
But BBC News has identified Vanquish bosses with links to Mr Barrowman and seen emails sent by Vanquish from the same IP address as his Isle of Man HQ.
Mr Barrowman has denied any wrongdoing.

None of these people deserve sympathy. They were not duped by a fraudster trying to scam them. They knew what they were getting into. I worked for a company just outside of London and a few of my colleagues started to do this scheme (or one similar - I can't remember the name). I met with an advisor from an accounting firm who was pushing the scheme and he told me that the government never looks retrospectively and that they had a legal fund to challenge anything. I walked away from it as it wasn't morally right. We all need to pay tax. This was literally avoiding all tax and the company took a percentage - I seem to remember 8%. I didn't want anything to do with it and my colleagues have subsequently ended up in a similar to position to the people here. I consider them to be decent people, but they are also intelligent enough to make their own mind up. Also, the people in this programme are only being asked to pay the tax that they would have had to pay previously, plus interest and a fine. I don't see them as victims, however they government should also go after Doug Barrowman if he has committed fraud.

I am going to cry for the victims, who participated in a tax avoidance scheme. That yacht documentary is ages old, it is not from 2022 (journalism at its best).

Tax avoidance, is quite different from tax evasion...I mean how many of the top earners live abroad for this reason. I don't hear of them being prosecuted! Although the royals got it right it right, you can't be half way in, and half way out. as indeed Sunaks wife n family are. We need someone with balls to change this loop hole,

The only sympathy I have for the mug punters is that HMRC should equally go after people who set up these tax avoidance schemes and all the people who stick money offshore, hide behind company names and trusts... etc
I just don't understand how anyone can justify tax avoidance when others have to stump it up
